Hey guys,
I'm picking up an RB20DET for a mega steal, only problem is there is no turbo, I've got a buddy who is getting rid of an Holset HX35 which will bolt right up, just wondering what your guys opinion on the turbo is, if it's good or bad? or should I just hunt down a stock turbo for the time being. I do plan on later upgrading the turbo.
let me know what you guys think.

Never understood the hype behind Holset turbos. In my opinion they suck.

Turbo doesn't "bolt up" but not hard from what I've seen. I almost got one for my Rb but changed my mind, they're great turbo and handle high psi as anyone familiar with turbo diesels knows and the smaller one can be had for $200-400 used.
You will need to space the turbo from the manifold about an inch or so due to it hitting the valve covers. Also new lines will be needed and a downpipe. Good thing most holset utilize a v-band so should be easy to have a dp made.

Theres a pic of the spacer between the turbo and exhaust manifold to give you an idea. But all in all for the price its a good turbo, rebuilds are cheaper than most name brands and should net you around 350/400 if tuned and properly setup. Good luck!

I have a hy35 on my sr20 and love it!! And had a hx35 on my 7mgte supra. I've never dealt with rb20's but I think a hy35 might be better suited (response wise) since it's a small displacement engine but I could be wrong. Just my .02.

If you're worried about spool time just get a smaller exhaust housing. They exist factory and bullseye power makes some billet baller ones. The bullseye housings are dsm flanged though so buyer beware.
If your manifold is undivided and the turbo IS divided, run a quick spool valve. Either make your own or buy one from sound performance.
People who think holsets are all hype dont understand turbochargers and how they work so feel free to ignore snow man over there.

People who run it on the RB25 needed a flange spacer to clear the rocker cover.

^correct. It won't simply bolt on unless you space it .5"-1" off the manifold. Ask me how I know... The compressor housing hits the manifold before it is able to bolt down flush. The only way to get around spacing the turbo off the manifold is to clock the compressor housing so the outlet is pointing down, but then you would have to run an elaborate intercooler pipe setup.

I based my manifold off of FutureFab's.
Scroll down in this thread past all the compound turbo sex and you'll get and idea of what you need to do to make that holset fit properly.

I would definitely invest in a quick spool valve. There are some videos on YouTube of someone with a RB20 and HX35 w/ a QSV. The response isn't too bad when the QSV is closed and allows serious top end when fully opened. Plus, for when you haven't cranked it up yet, keep the QSV closed and enjoy the responsiveness! Good luck

Oh yeah, get some cams. you'll love cams plus hx35 plus quick spool valves. Hope you get what you want out of your car/setup either way. Good luck and have fun dood.
