Ive been playing with Nissan engines in my personal cars for 10 or so years now, sr20's, vg30's and rb25's. All have been good to me and fun to drive. My favorite is the vg30detts torque and the rb25 neo with its snappy high revs. After the premature failure of my latest compound turbo Neo, I decided it was time for a change.

http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/j398/2weldit/Snapbucket/6AE3DB6C-orig_zps4bcfbdeb.jpg (http://s1083.photobucket.com/user/2weldit/media/Snapbucket/6AE3DB6C-orig_zps4bcfbdeb.jpg.html)

The 1jz vvti.

I chose this engine for a few reasons. I like the ease of working on inline engines and the smooth revs that come out of them. I also like the exhaust is on the passenger side. It has solid cam over bucket valve train for reliability at high revs. It also has variable intake cam phasing for increase in low end torque. The Rb had cam phasing and it made a noticeable difference, but it only had 2 stages, on or off. The vvti is continuously variable to get the maximum torque out of the engine. This engine also has factory metal head gasket, unlike organic material on Rb. No weak 2 flank oil drive on the Jz like the Rb.

So I tore it down and cleaned everything off.

I ordered a full factory gasket set and changed everything except head gasket. I also ordered new water pump, timing tensioner, timing idler, timing belt, thermostat, and some coil pack connectors. I also had the alternator rebuilt.

Thanks for the props on the welding guys!

Last night I was at the shop changing belts on my truck. I planned to stay after and finish the down pipe. Here in arizona we get crazy dust storms and one happened last night. The dust was blowing in tje bay doors really bad so i finished the truck up and decided to leave.

As I backed out of the drive way a lightning bolt struck and blew the transformer! It was super bright and made a loud buzz as a stream of raw power shot out of the transformer. Then the whole street went black and fell silent. I was like wtf?! Next i see a dancing orange glow on the side of the building next to ours. I drive around the corner to the dry grass field behind us and theres a brush fire. So I call the fire depot and they show up and put it out.

Nothing too crazy but could have spread to the whole field.

I can weld, I just never get those beautiful looking welds on thin material. I can replicate them on heavy gauge SS though. Perhaps my heat settings are wrong...

Heat, speed, and gas coverage are what you need to play with.

jr_ss
07-02-2013, 01:48 AM
I do move quickly on the thin stuff, but that's because I'm on the verge of blowing through it. Next time I'll back down on the heat and see if that helps a bit. Thanks for the tips, I'm not going to clutter your build with welding 101. Everything looks rad.

I was able to dyno test the downpipe I made vs stock. Same day, same dyno, no other variables changed at all. Stock ecu, stock wastegate, 3 inch exhaust, Garrett fmic, all stayed the same. Gained 22lb/ft and 26hp just by switching the pipe.

Good build. Same build I'm doing minus I'm using a 66mm turbonetics and 1000cc injectors, plus completely refreshed engine. Fab work looks good, I'll be making all my stuff as well.

Any updates on the build? Thanks again for advice on modding that stock rb25 manifold a while back. I ended up making 360whp at 1 bar with the holset. Then I went through 2 bottom ends because of oil pump failures so I'm doing a vvti 2J now.
I think it's safe to say we switched platforms for similar reasons haha.

Ok so it hase been awhile since Ive updated. Been super busy with work so I havnt been able to play as much as Id like. I have taken it to a few events to thrash around and it has been very reliable. No mechanical issues, just got a little warm at the track, but we were pounding it and didnt have much run off for cool down. Also didnt have all ducting fabbed, have since ducted and it was very cool at the Ifo event.

I have made some progress/changes here and there though.

Installed the D-jet Pfc.

Which includes bending a ecu tray.

Ordered a new Fcedit kit. This is soooooo much better than the hand controller and has more features to play with. Data logging is awesome! Can see knock and afr and graph against boost, tps, voltage, ect ect. Worth 300 bucks all day long.

Picked up two new tial wastegates. A V60 and a Mvr 44 to go along with the 42r. Thats a 5 inch inlet on the purple thang.

Good news is I have been busy with work. That means you know the bad news, no time for the toy car. Since its not related to this thread, follow me on instagram @futurefab_jon to see whats been going on.

I did get some ID1000cc injectors, 4 bar map sensor and a walbro e85 pump. Next is some fittings for the fuel rail. I really jus need to get medical meth so I can pound out the compound kit.

I finally got all this stuff togeather, and it works awesome! The little one spools hard down low and then the freight train shows up ahead of schedule and just keeps on chugging. Running 25psi on pump. Need to switch to e85 and turn it up.

Not at all! She sits dormant most of the time. Too much attention and kill mode for the street to daily it. Just wake her up for track events which are too far apart.

I did do a V mount setup on her recently, helped out a Lil bit with cooling. I also picked up some Tomei cams and titan cam gear, but havnt installed yet. Work is getting busy so I dout know when that will happen.

I can weld, I just never get those beautiful looking welds on thin material. I can replicate them on heavy gauge SS though. Perhaps my heat settings are wrong...

some guys run pulse setting, high heat penetration but pauses in between not to over melt the thin metal.
