SR20DET Redtop

One day I stopped at a gas station and filled a little oil since I was a little on the lower side of the dipstick just to be safe, and it started pouring for maybe 10 seconds all onto my back and engine bay (front was sticking out of the gas station ceiling). I checked the dipstick and it was a little below H, but whatever. Got into the car and it started for a second and died. Tried to start it again and it just kept cranking. It's flooding. I pulled the spark plugs out and they reeked of fuel and were completely black. Dry, no oil. My oil cap smelled like fuel too. So I pulled my fuel pump fuse, opened my gas cap and it started and ran for maybe 3 seconds then died. Started it again and it ran for about 1-2 seconds and died. It just kept repeating. It never ceased to start before dying. What the hell...I did it for a good...ever. Idk. Just kept starting right back up. Plugged the fuse back in and it flooded and cranked, not even coughing or showing signs of turning over. So I pulled the spark plugs again and let it sit for a little while (didn't have much time) and it started right up and idled. The idle is a little rough and it is rich of the smell of fuel in the exhaust. Later that night it happened again, flooding. Kept starting without the fuse in. But I got it to start by repeatedly starting it without the fuse and letting it die in quick succession, then running outside and popping the fuse in and starting it like that LOL. Fml, what's going on? Can fouled plugs alone cause this? Help please!

what kind of injectors? and what kind ecu/ems are you running?

Stock. And stock.

is it flooding across all the cylinders or just 1?

As far as I can tell, all. The spark plugs all reek of fuel.

could be an ecu issue, but i would go through and test all your major sensors. ie, maf, o2, tps, cas.

make sure your TB is closing all the way too.

Could the rain have an affect on hurting the maf? I'll try check with a known working maf and ecu soon. Also, I have a leak between my turbo/manifold and turbo/elbow. Both being before the o2 sensor, could that make that much of an impact that I'm flooding my cylinders? No right?

on the exhaust side? yea it can throw your AFRs off, so your ecu could be adding more fuel than necessary.

on the same note, you should check for vacuum/boost leaks on the intake side, that can throw your airflow reading off, and ecu will add more fuel than necessary

Enough to consistently flood the motor?

yes definetly

Okay so I changed the plugs, gapped to .034 and no change. Still starts with the fuel pump fuse or egi pump relay out then does after a bit. But with them fuse/relay in, it just floods. Such a sudden mishap lol.

gapping plugs has nothing to do with your problem, its a fueling issue, why would you change spark plugs??

check for vacuum leaks and exhaust leaks before the o2

In the case that they were beyond fouled. Anyway, there's a leak between the turbo and manifold. I bought a new gasket and I'm gonna pull the turbo today.

Update: swapped my ecu and maf for known working ones and no change. Pulled the fuel rail and primed, nothing leaks. Unplugged the o2 sensor plug and no change.

Do you happen to know wth is going on with my fuel pump fuse issue?

I had the same problem,Check and make sure you don't have an inter cooler pipe loose, the bottom corner of mine had popped out and was causing my car to do the same, also like everyone said, check the maf as well

I've found the problem! Lol stupid and idk how the hell it happened. But here's a conclusion and recap of what I've done for people needing to solve this problem on their own car.

• Cleaned the maf, then changed it.
• Swapped ECUs with a known working one.
• Unplugged O2 sensor in turbo elbow, testing to see if leaks were severe enough to cause it to flood. (Unplugged the clip, not remove the sensor.)
• Sourced out a major leak in between manifold and turbo, changed the gasket.
• With everything out from above statement, we tightened all bolts and RTV'd most gaskets.
• Changed spark plugs, re-gapped to .033.
• (and what was the problem for me) coolant temperature sensor for the ECU; It was unplugged. Idk how, but it unplugged itself. Make sure yours is plugged in, or change it to check. It's the two wire one. The one on the left; it had a red clip on mine.

Thanks guys for the feedback! I really appreciate the help. And I hope this helps someone later.
