View Full Version : first start up oil pressure on built S14sr22
I just got me engine wired up after a complete rebuild. I wanted to check my oil pressure by using the starter motor as a primer and have the valve cover off (no fuel pressure) just like this guy did: SXDS15 Mazworx SR23VET - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fMSCeV_U8U)
Long story short, I did not see drips start flowing... and I want to know if I just pulled all my hair out for nothing or if I should be seriously concerned.
I did not pack the oil pump with vasoline.
I do have an oil pressure gauge that will be wired in before the next attempt, which will likely be a full on start.
Am I fucked or should this actually be expected at such low cranking speeds?
Thanks a bunch

On my freshly rebuilt motor (build thread if u want to reference) I did not see oil from the tubes or pressure in my aftermarket gauge.
Upon firing it up I saw pressure within seconds on the gauge. And popped the VC off. It was clear oil was making its way to the top.
Starter just doesn't produce rpm needed is what it lead me to believe.
I would not be scarred in your position. Get a gauge, fire it up! I'd say max of ten seconds to build pressure. Or I'd be worried and kill it.
Just my input. Goodluck

This is a fresh rebuild right? If so there should be enough assembly lube to take care of the oiling process until oil does flow. If you want to bump up cranking rpms pull the spark plugs and it should spin quite freely.

Before you start a rebuilt engine for the first time, you should prime the oil system and verify the oil passages are clear especially over the cams.
a proper machine shop that builds engines all the time should let you barrow one of these devices. Its just a tank with a valve that sends oil into the block:

Disconnect the CAS, crank it for a few seconds to prime the oil pump, connect the CAS and start it. Thats what I've done on both my SRs and RBs when I freshen them up with brand new oil pumps.
I had assembly lube on everything, so I should be good there, as long as it didn't wear out after I let the starter crank it for like 45 seconds.
Now I just have to decide whether I want to clean my gas tank before the first start or after the first start but before the break in.
I started it up with the oil pressure gauge wired off the battery, got 80 - 85 psi until it warmed up, then it dropped down to mid 30's after it was warmed up.
Thanks for the input peeps, it really helped clear my mind so I could grow a pair and start my motor.
