Goal: VQ35HR Swapped S13 Sil-Coupe 240SX "Zilvia" - Autocross Build
SPOILER: I just end up drifting it.
I've been putting off starting a build thread for the car since I wasn't sure I'd be able to keep it updated, but I recently saw the value of the discussion these threads promote and decided I'd have to start writing. I also tend to take a lot of pics so I'll have to post multiple times due to the 50 pic limit.
Backstory Garbage
I got behind the wheel of a friend's '03 M3 about a year ago and decided I needed a project car to work on with my son. Being a Nissan nut I settled on a sil-coupe in Cali that needed some love. Coupes are pretty rare in my area, especially with a Silvia front end.
I flew out and drove it back to Louisiana. The KA mileage was unknown but it supposedly had been rebuilt within 20k miles. It had a Sparco / NRG QR wheel, Nismo shift knob, G35 Coupe wheels, Z32 brake setup with 5-lug hubs and drilled / slotted rotors, Dmax-looking tail lights, tired seats, a shredded dash, and a rat's nest of wiring. There was no power steering ( pump was full of iron filings ), neither the speedo nor the tach worked, and the JIC Magic coilovers were completely shot. They were also so low that I shredded a tire on the way back from rub. The AC wasn't hooked up and the 5 speed's synchros were trashed. Included were a set of Z32 wheels with bald tires, a set of 20mm spacers, an extra S13 USDM digicluster, two S14 clusters ( one with white guages ), a rebuilt Calsonic compressor, JDM surfboard LED spoiler, a jack and various extra parts and fluids. All this crap in the car didn't help the ride height on the trip back. I overpaid but karma got me back to my swampland with only a couple minor snags.

Since I bought the car to have fun, I immediately took it to an autocross where I faired pretty well... if you rule out the results... and judge based on enjoyment alone. I got thrown into STX for my racing steering wheel, Silvia front end, larger wheels, and the boat anchor aftermarket coilovers. The tires were garbage and there were some nasty noises coming from the drivetrain. Turned out the RUCAs had bad rod ends and the front right hub sounded like Wheel of Fortune with the car on jacks. I had an absolute blast. I addressed the car's immediate issues, got some KW V3s ( night and day difference ), a set of NT05s ( more night and day difference ) for my G35 Coupe wheels, an Energy Suspension poly bushing kit, and did random enhancements to help me cope with driving the car around town.
Since I had two digital clusters on hand to try to get working, I tried the How to:Repair 240sx digital speedometer with HUD. NICO Club (http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/how-torepair-240sx-digital-speedometer-with-hud.html) resistor fix on Nicoclub and it ended up working on the JDM cluster... which can't switch to MPH. So I rocked the KPH.

This was about the time I was looking into swaps. I wanted a car to autocross but didn't want to take the fun out of the car just to adhere to strict class rules. I researched all the turbo RBXX(20,25,26), SRDET, and KAT options. I like the cost of KAT, the weight of the SR, and who doesn't love the legendary RB, but I'm not crazy about the weight and I'm not looking to drift ( EDIT: present-day Jason is reading this and laughing hysterically). I ended up deciding that there was enough info available for me to try a VQ swap. After a month or so of looking for a 350Z / 370Z / G35 / G37, a rollover 2007 Nismo 350Z (#120) with 55k miles popped up on Copart. After some research on how Copart worked I could give a class on it, but that's a different thread.
The beauty of getting the whole car, not to mention a limited edition version of the car, is that you can part out everything that won't fit or you don't need. Highlights included Nismo Exhaust, Nismo Rear Bumper, Suspension, Nismo Yamaha Vibration Dampers, semi-trashed Nismo Rays wheels and a lot more crap I have and haven't sold yet.

The Plan
I plan on using as much of the newer or higher performance parts off the Z as possible. I've done a lot of research on most of this but feel free to point omissions or trash out.
Mounts:
I bought a motor and tranny mount kit off ebay that looks like it'll get the job done. I plan on cutting them shorter since I want to use OEM rubber motor mounts and the kit came with solid mounts, and anyone who's driven in New Orleans knows that's just crazy. I'm going to try to keep the motor as low as possible and will still probably need to space out the hood or cut it up.
I looked into different ways I could get the engine lower, since all the VQ builds have the telltale rear hood gap, but the most you'll realistically get is about an inch. You could spend a wad of cash on a dry sump system but the transmission is nearly as low as the oil pan. You could try flattening the lower front oil pan, but it would probably require modification of the the internal oil pickup, and the oil filter mounts just above the pan.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/uGrca317FZR7K71n7iO8EyTWDkWllt_3sbQS8i6dDr0=w266-h199-p-no (https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ronpC9qD95g/UaW-zqhELKI/AAAAAAAACgE/qjmSyqaKLB8/w1000-h750-no/2013-04-28+10.04.26.jpg)
Since I have the VQ35HR, my starter is going to be in the way of the steering rack since it doesn't have the tabs that the DE has to mount the starter on the passenger side of the engine. I'll either need to create an extension to the starter and mount it farther back, tilt the steering rack like PlusONETEN, or (worst case scenario) put spacers under the crossmember like a lot of other members, which apparently will throw off all sorts of roll center. I wonder if there's enough space on the crossmember LCA mount for me to offset the gap by welding the bolt holes closed and redrilling them higher...
Fuel:
The Z's VQ uses a returnless fuel system and relies on an in-tank regulator/sending unit. I plan on modifying the fuel rail setup to use the S13 return system. I picked up some fuel line, an AEM fuel pressure regulator, a 255lph fuel pump, and a couple of fuel rail adapters. Should be a decent setup for nice cool fuel.
Cooling:
The Z33 radiator / AC core / fans / overflow tank assembly is too wide for the S13 so I picked up a Mishimoto radiator and fan shroud kit, ouch. The warranty was the deciding factor in going with Mishimoto.
Power Steering:
I didn't have power steering for a few weeks before I installed a junk yard pump, which died after a couple of weeks from the iron filings even though I flushed the crap out of the system, but I really liked having power steering. Since my rack is apparently trashed from iron filings in the fluid, I ordered a remanufactured rack as well as a power steering kit off VQSwap.com (subsidiary of ChaseBays) to tie the S13 rack into the Z33 pump.
Brakes:
I plan on using the Nismo's Brembo setup, especially since I already have 5-lug with the Z32 calipers all around. In the front I just used the larger rotor and drilled out my knuckles to 14mm (IIRC) with a press. I also got some shorter bolts since the Z brake bolts' smooth shank prevents using the original bolts. The S13 steering knuckles are a good bit thinner than the Z33 knuckles.
For the rear, the bolt pattern didn't match up so it looks like I'll be fabricating some adapters unless someone knows someone selling cheap ones. The S13 ebrake shoes look like they'll line up with the larger rotor's interior braking surface but I've only done rough measurements.

Electrical:
I'm just going to basically put the entire 350Z electrical system into the S chassis. I'll need to interface with various lights, sensors, etc. of course. I don't initially plan on removing NATS or programming the ECU so I kept the entire steering column, throttle pedal, BCM... I've got a fair amount of wiring ahead of me.
Differential:
Of all the aspects of this swap, I think I've read the most on which is the best differential / final drive gearing to use. My current plan is to modify my subframe to take the Z33 differential. I plan on using a Q45 driver's side axle on the driver side, and the Z33 driver's axle on passenger side. There are people that say the R200 4.08 will serve my purposes well in autocross, however this would apparently be horrible for highway use. On the flipside, there are people that say the 3.357 FD out of an automatic transmission 350Z / G35 is an even better choice than the 3.54 LSD that I already have due to the weight difference, but I'm afraid this might be too tall a gear for putting power down.
Aside from the gearing, there are other reasons to go with the Z diff vs the R200 VLSD. One reason is that my VLSD is probably completely worn out and open after all the years this car has seen. This wasn't a huge factor since I could easily just grab another 240 diff, but most that I could have picked up were open diffs. The Z ECU reads ABS, TCS, and speed from the six-bolt output shaft diff flanges ( in addition to the ABS rings on the front hubs, of course ). I would like to have the option to use ABS if so inclined and a working speedo will be new to me. If anyone has some spare front hub ABS rings lying around, I want to buy them, LOL.
Here's a comparison shot I took of the Z and S body diffs and axles. The R200 S13 VLSD has no mounting bushings whereas the Z diff has bushings on the two mount tabs in addition to the rear. The rear Z diff bushing is on the subframe.

Post-build plans include a race wheel/tire setup: putting Toyo Proxes R888s on a set of RPF1s in 17x9.5, ~12 offset or so... or if I hit the lottery, some TE37s. I'd also like to get some adjustable sway bars to play with but I haven't started looking into which ones yet. Sadly, I also like the Rocket Bunny S13 coupe kit, which sucks, because the kit plus fenders would probably cost more than my KW V3 Coilovers.

Modifications are required to fit the Z diff into the S chassis subframe. You've got to widen the mount points and lower the mount deck about an inch. I'm still working out the last bit of structural support and mounting the rear bushing on the back. I'm going to get it all squared up and mount it back on the car when I get the engine mounted. I'll take custom driveshaft measurements and then pull the subframe for final mods, add the diff's rear bushing and paint it.

good luck with the VQ swap. i'm nearing completion of my vqde swap.
Wow, I like where this is going. I was thinking of going KA-T for the longest time now, but my ways of thinking has changed. One of my options was going VQ35HR, since I also own a 08' G35X sedan as my daily.

To lower the motor, some people space down the front crossmember.
Probably not the best solution as far as retaining suspension geometry and such, but it works.

Depending on his ride height (autox) it probably wouldn't be any worse than what we do to our vehicles by slamming it to the ground.

After calling around to several local businesses that claimed to build CV axles, it turned out that they all sent the axle off to some third party and got remanufactured ones back. Since my project required a shorter driver side axle than an OEM Z axle OR an S13 axle with a 6 bolt flange, eg. custom... nobody could actually do the work. I had a friend suggest what worked for them: an axle off a 95 Q45. I may have ordered the wrong side however, since the custom ordered AutoZone part turned out to be way too long. Thankfully I was able to return it.
Frustrated, I just started taking the axles apart to see how they're put together and to my surprise, EVERYTHING matched (aside from the diff flange bolt pattern, of course)! Between the 89 S body and the 2007 Z body, the CV side is made up of a six bearing cage held on with a lock ring.

I got to work swapping over the diff flange on the CV to the S13 Axle. During the work, a photographer friend of mine stopped by the shop and decided to experiment with some colored lighting.

Since I had the axles finally taken care of, I set to putting the final supports on the subframe (some square tubing with some 8 gauge flat stock welded on to spread the footprint), primed and painted it, and shoved it back up the Coupe's tail. I chose these mount points to counteract the twisting forces of the diff while mounting to the other side of the lower control arm mount point. It also cleared the axles nicely.

Still trying to work without both hands I spent a couple hours cleaning up the inside of the car. My sound deadening was so brittle that it came out pretty easily by scraping and jabbing it with a massive sharpened Klein screwdriver. A finished shot with the Dynamat Extreme should be in the next update since I'm not done with that yet.

We explored a lot of options, including: shifting the starter solenoid forward to clear the rack, modifying and using the bent up Z crossmember, and other bad options... but have decided to try to rotate the rack to clear the starter and take up the slack with the steering column angle since I had the Z and S columns to work with. Sadly, this is still in progress. Here's a comparison of the S and Z racks and columns for shits 'n giggs.

nice!!. What will you be doing for a shifter bracket ? One that is like the VQ Trans for SR swap ?
the Build looks promising! Keep up the good work!, Don't overwork your hand and cause more damage and heal faster! If you can do all that with one, hand, I imagine you would fly with 2 haha

crazy find on the Nismo Z!!!
Keep it up
Wow, great build and super well written. Keep it up. Subbed.
lucky find on the Z!!! this is a really interesting build, I like the read, not to dry :)
keep the updates coming!!!
Thanks guys! I was looking really hard for a VQ37HR but when the Z popped up, I had to grab it. I'm torn between selling the Nismo #120 center console badge, which apparently would go for a pretty penny to the right poser , or doing something like "Powered by" above the plate somewhere on the dash of the S13. Not sure yet. Any suggestions?
i've got the same Z Brembo's on my s14. i've been looking around for a set for the rear. keep us posted if you figure out how to mount them on the rear. coincidentally, i have the same wheels lol. be brembo's BARELY fit!

good luck with the VQ swap. i'm nearing completion of my vqde swap.
Very nice Sir! I'm working on a drawing to give to a machinist friend of mine that will work on a bracket. If we end up with something cost effective I'll definitely post on here. I'm leaning towards an aluminum threaded bracket that offsets the caliper mount holes towards the front of the car, but I'll know more once I give him a visit.
Wow, I like where this is going. I was thinking of going KA-T for the longest time now, but my ways of thinking has changed. One of my options was going VQ35HR, since I also own a 08' G35X sedan as my daily.
G35X are AWD right? Niiice. VQ35 are nice but it would be killer to migrate that drivetrain setup to the S Chassis...
To lower the motor, some people space down the front crossmember.
Probably not the best solution as far as retaining suspension geometry and such, but it works.
Depending on his ride height (autox) it probably wouldn't be any worse than what we do to our vehicles by slamming it to the ground.
Probably not, but I'm thinking that clocking the rack will be fine. I'll know more once I try to mount up the steering column and size up my options.

I went with the shifter bracket that Austin Hoke sells on his site (http://sites.google.com/a/vq240z.com/www/shiftermount). I was going to just shorten the factory bracket but I kept running into roadblocks trying to find someone to let me use their TIG setup. My brother enjoys welding on the project since it's completely different than the commercial work he does, but sadly doesn't have his own machine. This needs to change in the near future, LOL!

Most time consuming part of the swap, without a doubt. I don't know what's worse: cutting and modifying an existing harness, or starting from scratch! Anyhow, backtracking...
Made up a bracket to hold the ABS manifold. Swapped over sensors and cool pedals Z33 => S13.

Mounting column controls on MUCH smaller S13 bracket. Didn't fit initially so I had to chop up the 90° wiring harness plugs and make them 180° plugs.
http://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ydt_dw5TW4g/Ug1IG_8plXI/AAAAAAAADCs/6TTR1AkoRas/w1139-h854-no/2013-08-08+20.00.36.jpg

Steering wheel to controls reach is pretty good. Better than stock controls with the removable wheel. Z33 ignition cylinder mounts below the column as opposed to the S13; above. Not sure if I'm going to modify the cylinder or fiberglass the plastic column cover to cover the old hole and make a new one. Regardless, that's way off. I ain't got time for that. I dunno how the hell that cluster is going to mount in my dashboard tho. Gotta think a bit on that one.

Mounted the pedals, clutch cylinder, and BMC, then adjusted for pedal reach. Mounted column back into the car with the controls on and started throwing in the wiring.

I decided that since space close to the firewall is a a premium that I was going to send the chassis harness through the inside of the car. This turned out to be a shitload of adjustment, relooming of the harness, shuffling of grounds. Going to make a removable panel on the passenger side of the dashboard to get to the fuses. Ignore the wacky Dynamat placement on the floor. Beer happens.

Dealing with more hassle since my battery is in the trunk. Good because of space needed for my dual intakes, bad because of wiring. 350Z peeps don't really move their battery to the hatch for several reasons:
Battery has it's own damn house behind the passenger-side wheel.
There's a one-peice five-fuse block that mounts to the positive pole of the battery with six wires coming off of it. Nobody wants to run 6 wires from the hatch or get a five fuse block to distribute power once you get to the bay.
Z hatch is already pretty damn small.
Ended up grabbing a distro block off Amazon and am now able to replace that fuse block with a decent solution and it also has six regular fuse holders for the extra crap I'm gonna need to wire in, such as the sunroof... which is open btw... shit.

Custom driveshaft ordered from Driveshaft Shop... bunch more crap done. Hustling to make my custom brake lines to all four wheels and finish the wiring integration. Iffy bits include fuel pump wiring and I still have to figure out what to do about the headers touching the firewall.

Sometimes the only thing stopping someone from pulling the trigger on a swap or buying a part is not knowing enough because someone's build thread goes from a photo of a KA coming out and then the SR/RB/VQ/VG/BBQ going in, and they never touched on what happened in between.

Yeah, that shit looks good. You also have your power steering res at the same place I've put mine, and the fuel pressure regulator is exactly where I'm putting mine!
The main issue I'm facing right now is interfacing the fuel pump fuel level signal from the S chassis to the Z harness.
Where'd you get your intake tubes with the MAF bungs?
WhiteGLX
08-19-2013, 07:41 AM
the intake tubes are ebay 350z/370z intakes, i added the large 90* bends to move the filters to better location.
I used a Stack ST8130 display to get all my temp, pressure, Tach, speedo and fuel signals. It interfaces with its own sensors that i had to add. I tried to mess with as little of the factory VQ wiring as possible.

Well, I welded a return bung onto my driver side fuel rail to integrate with the S chassis fuel system. Going to hit an AEM fuel pressure regulator from Enjuku and on to the return line...

and now I have to pin this plug out and integrate the pump and fuel level sensor to the S13 fuel pump harness. Probably going to piggyback the Z driver side fuel level sensor together with the passenger side and hope I don't double the voltage, in turn giving myself a false fuel level reading...

Wiring is monumental but it's looking damn good. Ordered some Redline MTL to mix with the some MT-90 to give myself the perfect mixture of tranny fluid double entendre. Also ordered a crapton of Wilwood 570 so I can bleed the snot out of the new brake lines. Pics coming soon. Well, back to it. I've got a goal of being mobile by Sept. 1st so, better get my ass in gear.

Cool build. We're the Z33 pedal cover a direct swap or did you have to cut the S13 ones?
Thanks for the encouragement! Sadly the Z33 pedals were a complete fab job; no similarity whatsoever. S13 pedals are flat and larger than the convex, smaller Z33 pedals. Only reason I did it is because they came out of the Nismo.
I had to pull the covers off, cut off and then weld the Z33 pedals to the S13 assemblies. Then I had to QC the finished product ( hit the pedals with a hammer) to simulate panic braking and clutch kicking to make sure it could take the abuse. Then etch prime, paint, and recover them.

So I'm thinking of putting together a group buy on a machine shop order for some custom 350Z rear brake adapters to S13/S14/etc. I'm going to gauge interest from you guys to see if there's enough people out there that could pay $115 or less for a set of adapters to run 350Z rear brakes and five-lug rotors. Luckily the E-brake drum area of the Z rotor is the same, so there's just the issue of making a killer aluminum bracket to mount those bad boys to the knuckle.
PM me if you're interested. I want to make them and I've already seen some interest from posts in build threads, mine included, so hit me up and I'll put a proper group buy together. The shop I'd be going through does fantastic work to extreme tolerances. Picking them is a no-brainer.

Oh snap I found the fuel pump wiring pinout, AND the resistor value (2.4k Ohm) to replace the in-tank fuel temp sensor. Good little writeup here (http://blog.cj-motorsports.com/2009/02/24/350zg35-cjm-twin-fuel-pump-installation-notes-2.aspx) on reworking the Z fuel pump for duals, which I don't need, but the info is all there to modify the wiring to just about anything I could need.
I give myself one week or less to get this car rolling... maybe even this weekend if I bust ass.
I think the wife has other plans tho.

Cameraman was doubling as the fuel pressure regulator adjuster. Hadn't filled the coolant system yet and was running open cats. Pure will-it-run-or-not attempt. The motor started to warm up and the residual coolant started to pour out the heater loop opening that I hadn't run to the return yet... but it runs.

Thanks people! Can't tell by the video but I was freaking out.
Currently waiting on a left brake rotor and will be finishing the brake lines as soon as I can. I've been aiming to have the car mobile by Sept 1st ever since I broke my arm. It looks like it's gonna be really close!
On another note, I've been comparing the fuel level sensor resistance between the cars. The S runs ~80 ohms at empty and the Z runs 123 ohms at empty. A big issue with just swapping the sensor, aside from fit, is that the Z has TWO fuel level sensors in series that make up the 123 ohms... one on each side of the tank. They did this due to the fact that the tank straddles the driveshaft. Fair enough, but the issue is that by running JUST the single S sensor, the Z gauge will show the tank as full CORRECTLY, but the tank should run dry somewhere around the 1/3 mark. Shit.
So I'll see about wiring in the secondary Z sensor (luckily it's range is ~40ohms) to the S fuel level resistor in-tank. I haven't put in the new fuel pump so I haven't taken a good look at it yet, but I'll make sure to post what I find.
I've got a similar setup with the front ABS sensors. I've got to get a set of S ABS rings and possibly sensors too, but it looks like I'll be building a board to mediate signal between what the Z is sending and expecting back in terms of pulses, and the S setup. The S has a tone ring with a sensor running an electromagnetic mechanism. The Z seems to run the opposite by having a segmented magnetic ring on the inside face of the front hubs actuating an iron filament completing the circuit to indicate rotation. It may just be as simple as taking a count of the Z tone ring "teeth", tooth count of the S ring, and making a signal modifier to translate the appropriate signal.
Apparently I'm a glutton for punishment because these kind of issues seem to be what I get into the most. What a loser.

could you just not delete the ABS ? and run a standalone negating the ABS signal from the ecu ?
Well the whole idea is that I'd like to enable ABS if I can since I can always disable it via fuses or just uncoupling the ABS manifold harness. Also, my current budget isn't going to like getting a standalone right now... :o
I know driver assists like traction control and ABS get a bad rap but I would like the option to run the assist or disable it if I choose. Say I bite the bullet and get some Hoosiers for a series but I'm unfamiliar with the track layout (with autocross that's always). If I make three runs and push a little too hard on the fourth and slam the brakes in a moment of panic / n00bness to avoid a person / cone / wall, I've just flatspotted my tires and will have to shave them to even them out, or worse: have to throw them away...
It's definitely a good thing to have the option to run ABS and be able to choose not to.

I ran into a huge drama when I went to bleed the clutch. Firstly, the HR motors have an internal clutch slave cylinder and a tube that goes into the trans for fluid and bleeding. Well, the bleeder valve head broke off in the CSC tube block. Then the EZ-Out broke off in the bleeder. Fast-forward through an insane amount of profanity at high volume and I'm back in the garage with a replacement CSC tube. Little did I know they are typically replaced with the trans off the block. The hole for the CSC tube is about the same size as a clutch fork hole and we could barely even see WTF was in there.
Eventually we were able to pull the pin holding the old CSC tube with a pair of 10" hemastats holding a locking pin clip and a dentist mirror. We put the pin back in with the hemastats, popped the new CSC tube in, and proceeded to bleed the clutch.
Let it be known for anyone bleeding a VQ trans with a dry CSC, proceed like this:
Pump the clucth pedal several times and then mash it down all the way.
Open the bleeder valve quickly, just enough for air and fluid the come out, and close it back off.
Lift the clutch pedal and WAIT 45 SECONDS for the CSC to go back into position.
Pump the clutch pedal several times, lift it and wait again, pump it again several times and then mash it down all the way.
Purge the bleeder again, close it, lift pedal, wait again...
You see where this is going. The key is the waiting. Trust me, I burned almost two hours cursing and trying different crap. Just so you know, vacuum bleeding did NOTHING for me besides gum up my vac gun with Wilwood 570.
I'm going through the drivetrain and suspension looking for loose bolts and putting in thermal protection on the passenger side frame rail due to the fuel and brake lines running close to the heat. After that I'll loosen the motor mounts and clock the motor about 2 degrees counterclockwise from driver's orientation ( the motor is ever-so-slightly crooked ), tighten them back up, throw the manifolds, cats, Y-Pipe, rear exhaust, fab a middle section from the Y-pipe to the S13 exhaust, throw a seat in that B, go around the block, and immediately put it back in the garage cuz there's still no interior at all.

Thanks! Yeah, although I was lucky enough to find the NISMO and people literally swarmed to my garage from other states to get to the pile first, I really liked having the shell to pull from and reference. Tips to consider are:
Of course you want an intact, undamaged block and trans
You get all the wiring
Look for a shell that has enough damage to make it unusable for a dismantler or rebuilder. Rollovers are ideal. Rear end and front collisions aren't hard for a rebuilder to put together. Side impact and rollover are very structurally disruptive.
Cats...? CATS?!?!?! you're crazy haha.
I guess I'm going for a sleeper attitude. I've been talking to a lot of Z owners and they've said test pipes are obnoxiously loud, but I'm taking their advice. Thankfully the cats were super cheap, and Kinetix has a good reputation.

Oh that's perfect! Only issue is if everything else is in good condition, others may want it. I nearly bought a 370Z that had minor damage on all four sides, but when I went to look at it, a motor mount had broken and the crossmember cracked the block. Probably from high-centering the car on a curb or something.
Since I bought my car on Copart, I had to bid against other interested parties. Settle on a value that you're happy paying and if bidding goes over that, it'll make you reconsider the overall value you'll pay or you'll learn from it and refine what you're looking for in a donor.

Funny you mention Copart, I've always looked at cars on there, and that's where I've been looking for a Z33 at since I decided to do this swap. But none of the local Copart yards have a Z I could get for a good price. Closest one is Tennessee :(

I had kept my eye on a few Z's in some close yards, but the NISMO popped up literally 30 minutes from my house. I was able to go check it out, start the motor, and look at the block and tranny. I was bidding against someone in Florida, who undoubtedly hadn't seen the car, and won, probably because I knew it was safe to go higher.

Well I'm going to need to reroute the fuel lines, rework the cats, or both. Cluster is throwing a fuel temp sensor CEL since the passenger cat is apparently boiling the fuel. Also it's melting the carpet to the sound deadening.

Of course, I want to get all the kinks dealt with so that I can flog the car for hours and have it just look up at me, smile, and ask for more... but to make a short list:
Finish the interior and get the doors and sunroof wired
Build a removable spoiler and diffuser that I can put on for race days
Clean up the body with some wider fenders to fit some RPF1s, 17x9.5+18 front - 18x10.5 +15 rear, since I'm already rolled and barely fit G35 Coupe wheels. Maybe a BN Blister, a Rocket Bunny Coupe kit if a rich uncle dies, or something custom.
Build the internals in preparation for the next item...
Eventually get a standalone ECU, STACK display, useful gauges in the triple dash pod, and figure out if I want to go single turbo, twin turbo, or supercharger.

Definitely. It tells me I've got to just go crazy with heat shield. I did notice that due to my impatience to drive, I didn't shield the fuel filter at all. I've since wrapped it and the car performs better for longer, with noticeably less torque dropoff.
LOL hilariously clever. I see what you did. Cudos for your determination.
Thank you, sir! I'm trying not to write boring info-dump posts because who wants to read that?!
Alignment scheduled today, mainly to get my toe corrected, as well as check on the rest of it. Front is toed in badly since I changed steering racks and rod ends. It was so bad that my front NT05s were chirping going over expansion joints on the interstate. I only went about 3 miles and got home and did a rough correction with my limited tools but a lot of damage had already been done to the tires. Oh well, they're almost a year old and that's plenty of use out of a set of 200 treadwear tires.

You should be able to fit those wheel specs without running widebody. I'm running 17x10 +12 front and +20 rear on my s14... if I remember correctly the difference between s13 and s14 wheel fitment is minimal. I could be wrong. You can always check here (http://www.rimtuck.com), if you haven't already, to look at wheel specs on specific vehicles. I can't wait to see more progress on this build! Alignment was eye-opening.
LCAs front and rear had bad bushings.
Steering rod ends had binding angle at what is definitely a conservative ride height.
RUCAs had fused jam nuts so they couldn't adjust them.
Wheel/tire combo had minimal coilover clearance for camber adjustment, so camber plates are needed.
Shit! LOL!

I used a Stack ST8130 display to get all my temp, pressure, Tach, speedo and fuel signals. It interfaces with its own sensors that i had to add. I tried to mess with as little of the factory VQ wiring as possible.
Hi, I have a '97 240SX with a VQ35HR engine and a Stack 8130 display. The 8130 "Engine Speed" cable is connected to pin #110 on the ECU. The tach reads zero RPM under all conditions. I have not yet installed a "pull-up" resistor.
I would be grateful if you could tell me how you got your Stack tach to function.

The car did fantastic. 6th out of 61 in raw time, 20th in PAX. First and fifth were a Kart and a Formula Vee respectively. Second went to an ESP 2012 Mustang 5.0 on 295 Rivals x4. Third went to an Evo X and fourth to a 2013 STi.
Room for improvement: I could've used more camber up front and I'm looking to get some Drifworks Knuckles for the roll center correction and to modify them to mount the 350Z Brembos in the rear. Since I still have 300ZX brakes in the rear and the 350Z ABS manifold, the ZX brakes were locking up early since they're smaller diameter calipers. I ended up using this for rotation in the corners as if my sway bar was set soft/removed or if I was running a 2-way LSD and downshifting (even though it's autocross and I didn't leave 2nd). WIth proper, even braking the car will be much more predictable and I'll be able to brake later and more aggressively.
I'd also like to pull about 200 lbs out of my car to meet my minimum of 2500LBS for an SM car at 3.5 liters, and make myself a good strut tower bar that works around the HR intake. Grippy tires on a track day wheelset would also help! Something like some 275/35R18 Rivals on 18x10.5 RPF1 maybe? So yeah, I think I can take the top spot in a year or so, LOL!!!

Thanks man. I did a bunch of calculations and found the 275's BFG are 1.26" taller than the 235 NT05. Split the difference and it's crazy how different the car looks with a 3/4" lift. The suspension was left in the exact same position. :hey:
Race setup will probably be 275/35R18 BFG Rivals on bronze 18x10.5 RPF1's. This will yield a negligible drop in ride height. Thinking about getting some stiffer springs and making some coil blocks to space the KW's an inch taller for daily and pulling them out for race/hard park.

I like the mounting setup for the most part (the cluster could be a little farther back, will probably address later) but I hate the cracks. I plan on pulling the dash again and stripping off all the foam, contouring the center triple gauge pods and covering the whole deal with a racecar type suede. Should kill light reflection and prevent further cracking issues.

Yeah, the wheels are really tall. Hopefully the race wheels are a little shorter and the drop knuckles help me regain some low.
And I'm not drifting it on purpose. Evar. :D

Rub it in! LOL! Man, I just wanna go fast! Went to a local drift event and couldn't believe the seat time. You'll get 6 minutes MAX at an average Autocross. These kids were spending hours in their cars sliding; as long as they had tires, they were rolling.

Buy r-comps, esp if you're trying to be competitive in SM. Not sure how serious you're trying to be or if you're just playing around locally.
Since you're already flared 285s or 315s are feasible, though.
Also a clutch type lsd (ATS carbon or OS giken) will make you love the car at autox.

This is great input, but there's been some shitty developments in the AutoX rulebook. Basically the block of the motor now has to be a factory option of the chassis for the car to remain in SM, which means I'm now bumped to XP and will have to go full race to stay competitive. :barf:
This is a recent modification of the rules and really f*cked my whole universe. I'm not going to gut my car and try for nationals at XP because XP cars suck on the road. I can get R-Comps and a drift wheelset and go through my car making it lighter and keep improving it, all the while enjoying it in a variety of motorsport. I'll aim for FTD of the local autocross (team GFYS Roolbook) and try my hand at drift. Just really sucks because this car would've slayed in SM. :rawk:
Anyway... where was I... Oh yeah, I just wanna go fast.

And then I got some used race rubber. 70% 295 A6 for the rear, and 50% 275 R6 for the front. when the hell did they change the rules for autoX?
Not sure when it happened but the SM engine specs language I was using as a guideline for my build used to read:
Engine must be from the same manufacturer as the body (Toyota/Lexus, Nissan/Datsun, Honda/Acura, etc.)
And now reads:
Engine block must be a production unit manufactured and badged the same as the original standard or optional engine for that model.
Which just goes to show there's a lot of bad info out there and I was using outdated rule info for my build. :(

I think you're reading that rule wrong, it's still just same manufacturer.
The engine block has to be the same manufacturer as the original motor in the car.
It's still open for SM.
As far as slaying SM, maybe locally, but on a national level you need about 400whp and 315s all around. Come play on nissanroadracing.com to see the national level builds.
Are you still running the 6k/4k rate on the v3s? (i thought that's what they came with). Bump that up a few notches, too :)
Also, full sphericals in back, s14 subframe (just use the deflection of the stock rubber bushing) and a proper diff.
I don't have a nationals level car, still running stock fenders with 245s all around. I do great locally, but the step to nats is tough and I'm undertired.
Also sil front isn't nationally legal for SM either because non-oem bumper support and repositioning the headlights (I have one, too). You're probably like me, though, where it doesn't matter so much. My car will never be nationally competitive and no one locally will protest over that, so fuck it.

Yeah, locally it should do pretty good, and everyone is telling me to just stay in SM, although I really still think the rules want motors that came in the chassis' from factory. Sil front is a bummer for sure, didn't consider that facet.
Nobody here cares and I'm not out for sponsorship. I just want a few FTD under the car's belt. I definitely need a good Z33 LSD eventually since the viscous isn't up to par, and will probably overheat and become open during a drift event.
I loved reading about J-Rho's car on nissanroadracing.com, as well as a few other mental builds. Some other complete tube chassis race specific cars are WAY out of my league (which isn't hard to do) I guess it just frustrates me the level of non-amateur'ness that these guys are on, and having to compete against them. Guess that's just racing.

AceinHole has won a couple national championships now.
Tube chassis =/= SM.
I will insist that your'e reading the rule wrong and still fine for SM.
Engine block must be ... badged the same as the original standard ... engine for that model.
The engine badges have to match. that's it.
Nissan -> nissan.

Still fine for SM, locally, restricted from national level due to the Sil-front that is? (being competitive is another issue, LOL, such as lack of: horsepower, weight reduction, suspension, ...)
Was reading about AceinHole in the results issue of the SCCA magazine. AMAZING car, and the GTR that he beat running similar livery. I'm guessing they know each other... O.o :D
And I can't believe he beat the GTR! Wasn't that car running stupid wide Hoosiers x4?!

GTR runs 345 A6s all around.

Yeah, I ran my own fuel lines because the exhaust was boiling my fuel and I'm against vapor lock in relation to combustibles; also FIRE. I ran all stainless braided teflon and a ??? micron inline fuel filter. I'm using 5/16 to AN adapters until I get a fuel cell. I'll have to post some pics in my next "big" post.

Some 275 r-comps will work great once heated up, that's what R6's are great for. 160mph with that V6 torque is a lot of fun.

I don't have any spacers. I have my Tein camber plates almost maxed out and pulling the wheels off the coils via slotted top knuckle mount on the V3s, I'm getting about -0.5° of camber.
My whole daily setup is:
Varrstoen ES220 (V-TES) 17x9.5 +12 square with 275/40R17 BFG G-Force Sport. Could probably use some spacers in the rear since fitment could be better back there. Very tall wheel and tire setup.

I fixed the boiling fuel issue and my Subaru-driving neighbor liked the setup so much he got overly excited and put the car into a mailbox. He doesn't halfass anything so he made sure to lose control and plow it straight into an industrial-sized church package post. It did a number on my car, requiring new Silvia headlight supports, corner lights and I still have a good dent in my hood. DANG.

In all honesty I've really gotten attached to the car. Since the last update I've added Moog front ball joints, SPL front tension arms, a Circuit Sports solid steering bushing, various electrical work, heat shielding under-hood, and it all adds up to a car that doesn't really mind what I throw at it... unless it's event day. Then she decides to blow the power steering high pressure line that's been chafing on the lower block. It was like drifting a battleship through peanut butter.

ISIS cooling, TIG welded tractor fenders, engine bay etch primed, painted engine enamel black, Corbeau's bought, BC coils thrown in for good measure. Started on wiring and made some custom, super-beef motor mounts. Found a perfect dash in a yard. :yum: Water lines deleted and currently working on the trans mount.

While all this was going on I had a friend buy a wrecked Z06 for a donor LS7 to throw into an E46 M3. His plan was to part out all the extra Vette stuff such as brakes and interior, sell the S54 + SMG trans, and swap the LS into the M3, but when the Vette arrived it was in fantastic shape. He decided to rebuild the Z06 and part out the M3 completely.

Car is currently having the frame evaluated at a local body shop. He's got it roadworthy and has a complete rear end ready to drop on the frame as soon as it's gotten the seal of approval. Sadly he's not making a Vette'Camino like everyone has been begging him to build.
Worth mentioning are Jeff's SR S13 (drift) and Fernando's supercharged Fit (autocross). I really enjoy seeing these cars do their thing.

LOL! So that janky weldwhore exhaust goes on Andrew's Corolla wagon. He was getting me to cut out a crappy flange and weld pipe in it's place. Sorry, no custom header work just yet.

man the build looks sweet! excellent work.
For drifting, this is goinng to go against everything you've ever learned about driving but you want to let go of the steering wheel more, basically ply catch and release with it, let it do it's thing the car will steer itself almost.
Also you dont really want to stay hammered on the throttle as you'll spin out, if you already have a lot of angle going start feathering the throttle and it'll come back nearly straight then you can hammer it to get more angle. also throwing the steering wheel into the drift when you hammer it with low power helps
Hope i can help you have fun and learn a bit!

Thanks man, glad you enjoy the thread.
As for drifting, I've only got two events under my belt and I've just started to see the difference between drifting with the throttle ( loose steering ), and mash throttle ( muscling the car around with steering ). I'm also finally getting the hang of the feint and clutch-kick, and when to use the E-brake. The second event I did completely without power steering and then it rained. Although it sucked, it showed me an exaggerated example of how throttle modulation can keep everything sideways. Also the lack of power steering helped me feel what the car was doing and I panic-steered less, letting the wheels flick during transitions (so much that I smashed my thumb on the steering wheel spoke).
The tragic part is there is little proof that I progressed at all since I misplaced my GoPro and have no video from last Sunday! I'm hoping that I'll have more experience by next event and it'll show in the video.
Another issue I'm having is that at full lock, my wheel is rubbing on the frame and locking the steering in that direction. I had many really nice drifts that were ruined because I hit full lock and the wheel wanted to roll under the chassis. At that point there's nothing I can do, especially without power steering, but come to a sliding stop.
-_-
I'm hoping I can resolve this by extending my LCA's. :D

Sounds like you were getting bind, not your wheel getting stuck against the frame. Do you have eccentric rack bushings or anything moving your rack forward to prevent bind?

Sounds like you were getting bind, not your wheel getting stuck against the frame. Do you have eccentric rack bushings or anything moving your rack forward to prevent bind?
My steering rack is rotated so that the input shaft clears my starter. Due to this I can't use eccentric rack bushings because the driver side will actually move the rack upwards.
Anyway, I'll definitely throw the drift wheelset on and check my clearances! Bind would explain the wheel getting locked in place when hitting full lock? I do plan to extend my LCA's and shorten my knuckle arms to the tie rods regardless. If I actually am rubbing on the tie rods before the hitting the frame I'll have to mod my subframe to move the rack forward and look a little harder at drop knuckles up front. My tie rods are at a gnarly angle already; like a 15° angle from rack to knuckle.
Thx for the input!

I've since sorted my bind issue by extending the lower control arms 25mm and putting the smaller wheel/tire package up front when I feel like drifting. GKTech offset rack spacers, SPL caster arms, Powered by Max knuckles, basically throwing parts at the car. I read somewhere that you need a ton of aftermarket parts and Shitloads 'O Horsepower to drift... so I've been chasing that lately.

A friend called with clutch problems in his Z33, basically a bad internal slave. A week later my internal slave went bad. We pulled both trans and replaced the slaves with the ZSpeed HD internal slaves (Corvette slaves with adapter plates and custom hoses). We also opted for the Wilwood masters.

They had autocross, karting, spacewalks, amazing catering, ride-alongs in the track prepared cars, and ride-alongs in the drift cars. I made an edit of the GoPro footage from those two events. I hope you enjoy it.

Dude, awesome update! Looks like you're enjoying the hell out of the car. That's great. The car looks seriously bad ass on the RPF1's.
Question: why does your trans have an internal slave? My CD001 has an external.
p.s. Japanese Kit Kat's are the SHIT!

Love what you did with the build, I just read the whole build!
do you always need gas or did you never get the fuel gauge to work right?
And lastly, I spend most my Internet time on HIDPLANET and have some some retros, currently with some Ls460s. And I have to say your output is simply not acceptable lol you killed the engine swap with abs and the wiring and all that but you left both projectors crooked? Your better then that haha

Thanks man, and I LOVE the car on the RPF1s. :2f2f:
As for the internal slave, the CD009 (HR, 2007?) is the model that they started using internal slaves. I've heard that there are some CD009 that actually have externals but I've never seen one. Z1 sells a kit that rigs up some jank-looking-but-still-external slave but I opted for the Corvette one.
Green Tea Kit Kat ruined all other Kit Kat for me. :yum:

:rawk: Awesome man, glad you like the thread! Sadly I still haven't hooked up the fuel gauge. I just reset the odometer and 200 miles is the distance I can go and still hammer down without fuel starvation on accelleration or cornering.
As for the TSX HID setup, my crooked projection is from my actual front end being crooked LMAO!!! Neighbor drove my car into a mailbox, a huge mailbox, and I haven't fixed the points where the Silvia headlight housings mount to the fenders. I believe I've straightened her face a while back and the projection was nice and even. And I love them. They're brighter than my high beams and light years  ahead of the OEM Silvia H1 projectors. I'll try to remember to take a pic.

but the fact that you did a retro is fact alone that you care for a fully rounded car. I can't stand a fully "built" car with some ebay 4x6 with a plug and play. Smh

Hopefully I find the issue ASAP. Something is grounding while driving and I may have to start stripping back harnesses if I don't see it soon. Car is driveable for the first time in two weeks. Flywheel and throttle sensors replaced but had no effect on the random throttle circuit codes. Yanked the dash and all the wires and started bashing my head on the car. Now I'm here. Car still has panics and it feels like it's got an interrupt on the ignition, but it's only when going over bumps.

I did! The driver firewall wheel well grommet had gotten unseated and water coming off the tire was shooting directly into the wiring clusterfuck I have shoved in the kick panel there. I put a shop light in the footwell overnight and baked the electronics dry, and then put the grommet back and sealed it up tight like. No problems since, but shit got really annoying for a while there.

I qualified and got paired up with my friend Jeff in his blue type-X’ish SR S13 hatch. I led the first run and absolutely left him, but the next run I was really struggling to drift slow, constantly changing distance and angle, and never really tucking in good. A one-more-time was called and I led first again. Jeff got in on my line, shaved a bit of angle to keep up, and pulled a killer follow run leaving me no choice but to go ham on the follow. We launched and I was on his line and had a respectable distance up until the last sweeper when I got carried away and scrubbed my passenger door on his bumper. I made contact and therefore lost, but we both were stoked with the runs and never-lift jokes are still circulating. (note the position of the rear wheel in the well for later reference)

The week before the event I had to do a bunch of repairs on the truck and finish the SR hatch. I ended up finishing the truck on a friday and shipping off the hatch at noon on the Saturday before an event.

I spent 3 hours on a quest to mount tires on spares and started wrenching on my car solo, busting ass in the shop, knocking out the last items on my work list around 5:30am Sunday morning. I showered, grabbed an hour of sleep, got up, packed the truck, and headed to the track. :D

It was an epic LUCKY day. The weather forecast called for cold and rainy all day, but the drive down was glorious. The moment I pull into the track however, my brake pedal hits the floor and I yank hydro to avoid crashing, my aero package literally 3 hours old. SURPRISE brake leak YAY. *hmmm, maybe it’ll fix itself*
Tech slaps a sticker on my windshield LOL, and I roll onto the pad for the parade lap, solely using the hydro for braking. I got some funny looks pulling out of grid before the first run but the leak had to be addressed. The leak ended up being the passenger side firewall chassis rail tee, right next to my header FML. Flare nuts getting tightened with hilarious blasphemy of tool usage and someone walks up with the old, “everything ok?” Yeah asshat, everything’s rainbowtastic, I’m just paying these event people because I like burning my knuckles in public… but I instead give a friendly wistful reply, even going as far as to point out my brake reservoir is most probably empty. He says, “Oh, well I’ve got some brake fluid in my truck” and proceeds to win my heart with a bottle of DOT3 paint destroyer.
Game on.

This 1JZ single turbo SC300 piloted by Ryan Lemons was glued to my ass most of the day, the taller gears really coming in handy. At one point a clipping cone was hit and dismembered, and the base was laying in the middle of the track, which I drifted right over, nearly taking the face off Ryan’s passenger.
Seriously, watch this: https://instagram.com/p/zdcct3mGAd/
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-wj8Bj1ME-gM/VPVBBhCpxPI/AAAAAAAAEOU/D742681XFVY/s721-no/IMG_0260.JPG
On the way home I hear and feel something hit and bang around under the car, followed by a faint oil stink. My brother texts asking if the smell is me. He gets in front and confirms that it’s me. We pull into a weigh station and the car is pouring oil from THE DAMN DRAIN HOLE. We take a joy ride for a plug and oil at AutoZone and in 30 minutes i’m back in the road, having avoided a motor destroying catastrophe. The oil pressure never went below 40psi, and it must have been two miles of driving on a missing drain plug. Epic and lucky.
The pic below is my review of the GKTech rear knuckles. Alignment spec'ed at zero rear camber and toe, car had tons of grip and sooo consistent.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-v6TJJ7VgusQ/VPVBAj-2dSI/AAAAAAAAEOM/Zuo9hCgLnYo/w942-h707-no/IMG_0265.JPG
Car is a blast to drive with the badass alignment, and for the first time I’m proud of the LOOK of the car.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9ZzIwGCWGok/VPVA9cGHAVI/AAAAAAAAEN0/91Ric0CDBe0/w961-h721-no/IMG_0158.JPG
Lastly, if I can put the busted KA back together with a new timing guide, I’ll have a legit daily. :bigok:

Thanks! Yeah it's risky but I've only had a support truck so far, no trailer. I've also had a mechanical every event. Shifter came unbolted the first one, blew power steering the second, ground wheel on LCA the third, and brake leak / oil plug the last one.
I believe the Vette is sitting at around 28k and mean as ever.

The VQ35DE hatch started this weekend.
Custom harness work by Hexagarage.
NATS removed by Osiris.
Fuel rail adapted to use the return system on the S13.
Had to rewire the flywheel sensor since the plug was ripped off. -_-
Three of four pedal sensors threw throttle codes. The one off my HR car worked.
I really like the exhaust note. :D

STATUS REPORT
Car is taking a ton of abuse from dailying and driving 150 miles round trip for the drift events in NoLa. I believe the exhaust is broken in several places. The fuel filler neck is bashed in from fun tandems. There are lots of fun noises happening while driving. My 10A dash illumination fuse keeps blowing during commutes for some reason.
I posted a stripped two tone coupe chassis a while back. Now that the VQS13 hatch is close to driving, the plan to cage the two-tone is getting close to starting. During this changeover I plan on revisiting a lot of the choices made in my build, as well as improving on things that I've originally done.
VQ35HRS13 Sil-Coupe version Two(Tone)
Gold firewall wrap
Long tube headers with collectors, Vbands, and resonator
Reinforce strut towers ( mine are tearing, again )
Cage
Z steering rack on S subframe moved forward ( This will solve several issues with my car: Starter clearance of steering rack since the Z rack input is farther from center, installing the wider Z rack moved forward will get rid of the need for the offset steering rack spacers.
Heater / coolant bleed line
Revisit installing Z A/C :O
Revisit installing a fuel cell... maybe ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Hydromat fuel pickup
Metal Rocket Bunny widebody ( special project )
Z front hubs mounted on custom angle uprights based on Wisefab kit ( shopping cart caster physics, another special project )
Tube front
Aluminum removable inner fender tubs
Brake bias hard line routed for adjustment in cabin
Heat shield stock fuel and brake lines on passenger side
Custom LED / HID Silvia headlights
Pedal box - emphasis on heel-hinged throttle pedal and better positioning for heel-toe
Switch panel with breakers
NATS RFID in remote for push button start without a key but retaining anti-theft
Shorten shift bracket and linkage (GKTech is working on some interesting ideas)
I don't plan on doing all of this before migrating the VQ to the 2tone, but a lot of it will be much easier without a motor in the bay. Basically we've been able to acquire lots of the tools needed to plasma cut CAD designed plate steel, press bushings, bend and notch DOM tubing, etc. and have been putting it all to use.
I may make another thread. I can't wait to get started.

Sorry man, I don't know any builders in the area. You should post in the Nola Drifters FB group.

Second VQ swap done and roaming the streets. Should be heading for paint in the next couple of weeks, and hitting the track in the November event at Nola Motorsports.

Are you still running the same axle setup from the first page? The driver side s13 axle with the inside cv swapped out to a z cv? I was thinking of having GetNuts make me z33 pattern stub shafts for my r200 and they say that I could then use z33 axles on both sides. Nothing about one side being too long.

Right, I think that might be why the driver axle was too long when you first tried it. The r200 is a bit narrower than the z diff.

Sorry man, no info yet since I haven't started work on the crossmember but I'll keep the thread updated.
This weekend was an adventure. Shattered the rear window on the way to day one of Nola Speed and Style. Motor threw a tantrum on the way to day two. Still, got some killer tandem action in with my good friends, got to meet some pro drivers, see them rip on the big track at Nola, and even drift with Nate Hamilton on the skidpad.
Looking forward to November 22nd. Hopefully the car will be back up to 100% and ripping with my brother in his car.

Thanks guys. Family is safe. Brother owns the red VQ car and his house got three feet of water. Father and uncle flooded too. My neighborhood stayed dry but for three days we could only get out via boat. Whole region got freak-of-nature amounts of water with something like 110k homes flooded. I have so many friends with flooded cars; some really nice... R32 Sedan, Mk4 Supras, S2ks, so many S chassis... It's heartbreaking.
The VQ ECU went into rice the other day and the harness is looking ok but will need to be completely removed and ohm'ed out, then sprayed with anti-corrosive. Probably drain all the fluids, pull intake, exhaust, turn the crank by hand a few times and go from there.

Very much so. We've VQ swapped three cars so far. The red RevUp hatch that flooded is my brother's. We're in the process of tearing it down. My neighborhood didn't flood but we were surrounded by water. Several of my family members got feet of water in their homes. My uncle got 6' of water. :_(

It was a love hate relationship. Ultimately I ended up moving back to FL just because I wasn't the right age to live in the quarter and my allergies we're constantly killing me from the old construction. I definitely miss the life style though.

How's the power with the stock HR? I picked up an HR swapped s13 recently myself. I just don't know if I'm going to miss the old turbo sr20 feel or if i'll like new car.

Sorry I haven't been on the forum much since the pic hosting thing broke all the links.
How far did you have to space out the driver side axle
So I think I spaced the passenger side IIRC, and the driver side was pushed all the way in. I recently remade my subframe and whatever combo of Z axles was working for a while until I destroyed my driver side at an event. Shattered the inner joint. I need to post some pics. I ended up making a custom stub so that I could run stock Z axles instead of modifying the shaft.

I love the power but the gearing leaves me wanting sometimes. I really just spend a lot of time banging limiter in second.
Car is pretty gnarly now. I've since tubed the front, smashed the rear into a wall, and then tubed the rear.
