Hello everyone,

My name is Devhin Hansen, and I finally decided that i need to do a damn build thread! Not only does this act as a personal blog that you can look back on and be like "DAMN WHY THE FUCK DID I DO THAT" but it's good for the memories.

A little history, I built a 1989 coupe that everyone despised of when i first bought it, i payed $400 bucks and an xbox for it so it wasn't the prettiest thing in the world. After a couple years people seemed to shut their mouths though, however i didn't document any of the building :( Some of you may or may not have seen my coupe, but it's been flying around on the internet. Here's a picture of it,

http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6224/6331355284_5c0ac0fd2f_b.jpg

along with my video I made for it
https://vimeo.com/30123611

I eventually posted the car, and got a surprising snag from Kyle Schloss, Pit crew member of Conrad. He bought the car outright with CASH, so right after that i bought a G35, then later accommodated the G35 with a GSXR.

Over time I started to miss the fact of my car breaking down and working on it, the feeling of boost, the sound, the blow off valve, DRIFTING IN GENERAL.. I HAD TO GET BACK IN THE GAME..

My buddy Ryan ended up having to post his 1996 S14 up for sale and I was fortunate enough to have just enough funds to purchase it!

I went straight to the bank!

THEN STRAIGHT TO HIS HOUSE TO GET MY NEW PROJECT! BOY WAS I STOKED.. You can see the look on Ryan's face on how bummed he is that it's leaving him :(

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b90/timberlando/Build/IMG_5893_zpsb4142ab9.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/user/timberlando/media/Build/IMG_5893_zpsb4142ab9.jpg.html)

Managed to get it home in a couple pieces, lol

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b90/timberlando/Build/IMG_5895_zpsa4903188.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/user/timberlando/media/Build/IMG_5895_zpsa4903188.jpg.html)

Filled it up and drove around and man, FUCK THE KA

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b90/timberlando/Build/IMG_5897_zpsf68cfa07.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/user/timberlando/media/Build/IMG_5897_zpsf68cfa07.jpg.html)

The car came with a set of XD-9 Work Emotions 18x10 all around and the front rims needed tires so i purchased some rubber.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b90/timberlando/Build/IMG_5932_zpsd03694d8.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/user/timberlando/media/Build/IMG_5932_zpsd03694d8.jpg.html)

The car also came with origin front fenders and origin kit but the front end was "Zenki" and I seriously couldn't stand looking at it, so it was parted out within the first week i owned it, but i did get the rims fitted on!

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b90/timberlando/Build/IMG_5942_zpsa624655c.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/user/timberlando/media/Build/IMG_5942_zpsa624655c.jpg.html)

I had to drive up to Olympia, WA with no hood to meet up with Russell at Nissanparts to buy kouki hood and lights, and ended up getting pulled over for no hood 5 minutes away from the dealership! lol

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b90/timberlando/Build/IMG_6006_zpse1bc2db6.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/user/timberlando/media/Build/IMG_6006_zpse1bc2db6.jpg.html)

I noticed the inside of the car was FILTHY as hell and the road noise was beyond unacceptable, i had to yell at my passenger to talk. I realized the fenders were wide open.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b90/timberlando/Build/IMG_5960_zps2246dea5.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/user/timberlando/media/Build/IMG_5960_zps2246dea5.jpg.html)

So the rear tubbing process begins, MAN WAS THIS A BITCH..

NO MORE RUBBING HERE!

Slapped on some origin 50mm wide body and test fitted the skirts.

A local guy, David needed an engine, so i sold him mine after i cleaned it up a bit.

Payed my buddy Aaron $30 bucks and dinner to pull the motor for me, lol

Decided to watch some live stream formula D and rip out my interior so i could start cleaning every inch of the car..

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b90/timberlando/Build/IMG_6081_zpsb6944782.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/user/timberlando/media/Build/IMG_6081_zpsb6944782.jpg.html)

Power washed the inside of the car, it was filthy as FUCK, oh my god..

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b90/timberlando/Build/IMG_6127_zpsfca85f23.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/user/timberlando/media/Build/IMG_6127_zpsfca85f23.jpg.html)

To make it a tad bit more quiet i added some knock off dynamite to the trunk, fender wells, and doors. My next power plant will accomodate for the extra weight :)
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b90/timberlando/Build/IMG_6149_zps19be9f04.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/user/timberlando/media/Build/IMG_6149_zps19be9f04.jpg.html)

almost all converted over to kouki! could not stand the bubbly ass zenki tail lights.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b90/timberlando/Build/IMG_6509_zpsfb4c996b.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/user/timberlando/media/Build/IMG_6509_zpsfb4c996b.jpg.html)

Alex Paraskevas needed some s14 seats, so I traded them to him for his brand new Apexi AVCR, time for a legit ass boost controller! I'm Stoked, thanks Alex! I can't stress how much this guy has helped me in the past on my coupe.

http://www.turbomr2.com/MR2/HowTo/APEXI%20AVCR/Fit%20AVCR%2001.JPG

Last night i got around to installing a Walbro 255 LP fuel pump, and pulled off both the rear and front bumper supports so i can fit my origin kit on.

decided against tubbing fenders due to not knowing where to put the huge ass fuse box, and power steering reservoir... The nice thing is that the s14 has bigger fender wells than my s13 did, so I should be fine..

Anyways got the bay all prepped for paint tomorrow! can anyone guess what color i'm going to do? lol

lol thank you alex! sorry guys, i was wanting to pull it out in the sun and get some pictures so you can really see the pearl, but it has been raining the last couple days.. plus my 1jz came in, lol been super busy..

Heres a better pic of what the paint looks like.. Getting the battery tray out was hell, had to hack up the engine bay, then bondoed in the holes/cuts i made in the metal, that took hours alone just doing body work, lol

What did you use to sand the bay down? Just hand sand different grits? Use any tools to make things easier?

Options13
06-28-2013, 12:56 PM
yes VQ is still for sale, and i am actually selling this 1jz, i have a vvti coming in next week ;)

and BigPawr, i used a DA sander for most of the engine bay, and used scotch bride on the rest of the hard to reach places.. I used a lot of bondo on where the battery tray used to be, i literally had to hack that shit out, lol..

but yeah I sprayed it myself with primer, white base coat, pearl, then 4 coats of clear.. lets see how it holds up to the 1jz!!

Harness goes out this week to get re-wired, by Mark Panic, and getting an AEM from John Reed.

All that is left to do is get an exhaust made, along with some intercooler piping.. The car should be running by next week if all goes as planned! fingers crossed..

engine defiantly taking shape, and looking much better ..

Finally got the engine in, without the tranny to see how it would fit, and it didn't fit the greatest... It needs to be moved over to the left more so the starter clears the tranny tunnel, I'm thinking about beating in the tranny tunnel, but i just painted it...

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b90/timberlando/IMG_7062_zps5cf4b103.jpg (http://s17.photobucket.com/user/timberlando/media/IMG_7062_zps5cf4b103.jpg.html)

tried towing the car to a shop to get an exhaust and intercooler piping made, but it turns out i needed to do a little more shit before they could do that..

as of right now this is where she sits.. i attached the hks twin disk clutch and r154 tranny.. it just needs to be dropped in now!! wooooooo!

Hey man, good job on the build. The engine looks really clean, you're doing good work.
I have a question though. For a 1jz swap, I've heard that you're not obligated to use a swap kit like the tech2 you used and that stock 1j mounts would fit the crossmember and all you'd need is the tranny mounts. Am I wrong?

I've been contemplating a jz swap for a while now but the 2k+ price tag for the kit and harness mod just seems a bit much for what it really is...

thanks and keep up the good work!

You need some kind of bracket/crossmember for the 1j to fit.

And "2k+ price a bit much for what it really is.."

2k for what?

well a complete swap kit that I've seen when I was looking around yesterday were pretty much 1500$... and having your harness made is anywhere from 500-1000$...

As far as engine/trans brackets go u do not need the tech2 kit... I bought the Get Nuts Lab brackets, a stock trans mount, and reused my nismo engine mounts to get it all mounted up. Wiring all depends on how much quality you are willing to pay for... Re-using old brittle plugs/wiring or brand new plug and play harness thats where the difference in pricing is

Read up in the 2JZ Swap thread all these things have been addressed

what worries me more about the wiring is if I do it myself, I might get tired of the stuff and might not do it entirely properly. And I know you know that sometimes motivation isnt always there. So I'm trying to keep it fun. My contacts where I'm from are pretty limited but I'm looking at respectable shops on the interwebz for around 750$ for a proper harness. I want to daily drive it too so don't wanna mess up/take off too many things. What kind of stock trans mount did u use? sr20?

They actually came with the transmission, luckily.. lol but they are stock covers, i just painted them.

Finally got around to bleeding the clutch, and wow, the hks twin disk doesn't feel as stiff as i thought it was going to be.. I can't wait to actually drive it and see how i like the clutch..

Also went out and bought some oil finally, there hasn't been oil in the engine for a while now, and i wanted it to be lubricated once again. Bought some AMSOIL 5w-30, with some REDLINE MT-90 Transmission fluid. It was the most expensive oil change i've done so far.. the 1jz takes 6 fucking quarts..

Also got around to just tightening up random bolts, and installing the throttle body, so the shot doing my IC piping can see what to do. The engine is getting closer and closer!!

-Custom 3" downpipe with pie cuts.
-Custom 3" mid pipe to exhaust
-Wideband bung on downpipe
-Intercooler piping
-Custom intake pipe with blitz SUS air filter
-Cut water neck
-Modify throttle cable bracket
-Eliminated coolant flow through throttle body
-Mounted Tial BOV

Nice build and surely a fun setup. I'd love to feel a 1jz in a s-chassis versus an overweight jzx100.

And is the intercooler piping direct to the intercooler? Like you can't remove any intercooler piping because it's welded to the engine?

i can snap some pictures when im at the shop next, they cut out some shit in the bottom of the throttle body, welded shut the lines, and grinded smooth.. looks clean!

and yes, my IC piping is welded onto my throttle body.. The reason for that is because if you look at usual setups for 1j's in s chassies, there is a crazy 90 degree angle at the throttle body, mine isn't soo aggressive. If i want to take my IC piping off, i would have to unbolt the throttle body, which is no big deal.

Word. I kind of understood the reasoning based on the layout but I was like "is it really hard mounted!?!" It should really rip with that short piping.

great build. i'm doing the same, well kind of. anyways, which intercooler is that? also, mind explaining the coolant elimination? did you end up with the honda aem v2? if so, how did that go?

Options13
11-24-2013, 08:13 PM
its a powered by max intercooler, and as far as the coolant elimination it's really simple, there are 2 hoses at the bottom of the throttle body, i simply just had them cut out and welded shut, then grinded down.

and the honda AEM v2 works great, my only complain is the long cranking before the motor starts.

shiftdrift
11-24-2013, 08:49 PM
which aem model did you go with? why the long crank times? i'm going standalone as well on mine (66mm single) and am still up in the air on an ecu. it's not often people do vvti 1j's on 240's, so information is hard to find haha.

Options13
11-28-2013, 02:47 AM
i went with the AEM 30-6050 I believe. Cranking times are long, probably about 3 - 4 seconds, but i look at that as a positive, as far as lubing the engine up before it fires up.

the 30-6050 is about $1k cheaper than the 1jz aem, and its the same shit, different pinout.

On hot days i've been having some over heating issues because my intercooler was mounted to close to my radiator. So now i am going with a v-mount setup, along with a twin scroll turbo, and cage.

I am unsure on what top mount turbo to run, maybe you guys will have a some suggestions for me?

I'm looking for full boost by 3500, and 450-500whp. I've been reccomended a few turbos, PTE5858, GTX3076, GTX 3576, Borg Warner efr 7670, and Borg Warner S358.

I have no idea which one i really want though!

Here's a quick teaser video of what in store for the car in 2015 :)

I will begin updating this thread regularly again!

Take the efr, watched on on a dyno on an fc make full boost at 3k and made 370 wheel before he ran out of fuel. And that was on 91 pump. Those things spool like a damn jet man. Also watched one on a guys mk4 supra with just that turbo and fuel to support make 420 at 1 bar. The efr is crazy expensive but theres a reason..... witchcraft .

Both were on a dyno dynamics, both 7670s

im debating either between an EFR 7064 or a 7670..

I want it to be almost fully spooled up by 3500, (20 psi) and i want to throw down around 450whp - 500 whp.

I am running 91 oct along with water meth.

Are those realistic goals?
I'm almost considering upgrading my cams to the tomei cams, but don't know if that is completely necessary.

Sorry I forgot which engine your building but Either way I wouldn't so much worry about spool on any of the models you've listed, although the 7064 would get you quicker spool no matter what.

Is there a reason you left out the EFR 6758? If your looking for a KILLER power band I'd use the 6758 with the 0.64 AR as they don't offer it with anything else. It will Choke slightly up top though... And when I say slightly... I'm talking like...you'd probably never miss anything because your mid would be killer.

If you want a tad more room to grow...with minimal loss in response. Go with the EFR7064 with the 0.92AR. Power band would still rip, still have better response than any other turbo in it's class offered by the competition and if you wanted room to grow... swap out the hot side to the larger A/R 1.05 and that'd be just about as large as you want to go on your set up. If you wanted even more response.....they offer a smaller hotside as well "A/R 0.83" That'd most likely be the best overall choice if you wanted a bit of room to grow.

The EFR7670 would work as well....but anything will "Work" it's just a matter of how well you want it to work. It'd be slightly less responsive than the other choices and it would give you more room to grow....but there wouldn't really be much benefit other than bragging rights as to "how large your turbo is" which is really just stupid.

One thing that really erks me is when people are like "ohhh man check out how large that turbo is." It's like.....Cool man... your car gets full power by 5300RPM... Right when the rest of us are already smiling from ear to ear and the party's already over. It's like.. nice build... but your turbo choice only lets you use half of the builds potential. "get the power under the curve." Different strokes for different folks though.

ps here is my dyno chart with my EFR. This wasn't a full pull from low RPM rolling into the power... but You can see how the power band is nice and flat....almost Naturally Aspirated-esk. It's what you want when drifting... Makes the car easier to drive. Wait what are you using this car for?

Thanks for your input mannykiller!

The car will be used to mainly street drifting / events. Mainly Drifting though. I plan on running race gas at the track, but on the street i am just going to run 91 oct plus water meth.

From the sounds of it, it looks like i may be better off with the 7064 .92 housing and just weld the internal wastegate shut?

I want quick response.. I currently have the M8280 and the response on that was awesome. is the 7064 .92 about the same size as my tomei?

if your aiming for a really responsive motor, I recommend a GTX3076 in a .64AR, big power then go with the GTX3576 in a .64 or .73 AR

Great build so far, watched the Dyno run at PSI vid and it sounds so good, keep up the outstanding work, but may I suggest some attention to brakes :p
maybe a set of 30mm Z brakes to a 350Z rotor for the fronts and full z32 rear brakes, would help keep the car from doing sad things in tight places

THe 7670 is a good choice. I don't have any experience with the m8280. Just Garrett's GTX series and BW EFR's and even though I thought my GTX3582 spooled up quick.... the EFR smoked it. I really don't think there is much of a comparison. Put it this way... MY EFR is pushing more air into my Engine than It can handle. That wasn't the case with my GTX. I think it'd be smarter to go with the 7064...for response...but even the 7670 is going to be just fine. You'd only notice the difference if you drove them back to back. Trust me your going to be happy either way. But NO DO NOT weld the INternal wastegate shut...... how will you control boost? That's a really really bad idea. THe internal wastegate on the EFR's work great, some argue better than external counterparts... even at higher boost levels. The only reason to go external would be if you planned to run some astronomically high boost pressure... like 30+ Lbs of boost.

It's between the PTE 5862 and the s358..

s358
-11 blade GTX58mm compressor wheel ( quicker spool )
-360 HD thrust pad upgrade ( quicker spool)
-quick spool turbine wheel
-.83ar twinscroll hotside

main difference will be journal vs ball bearing... what should i do!!

and will one hit my power goal easier than the other?

i'm expecting around 15psi around 3500rpms, and want to run around 20-30 psi max.

I'm aiming for 500whp and also on pump gas and water/meth.

never mind, i decided on the EFR 7670 with 1.05 exhaust housing.

Seems like the best option for the response/power i'm looking for.

ahh well now I'm kind of stuck what i want..

Either the EFR with the .92 housing or the 1.05 housing.

The .92 housing is internally castigated, and i would just be welding that shut and running two 38mm tial wastegates..

or just get the 1.05 and maybe buy a quick spool valve to make up for the difference in price..?

the .92 is about $300 more... and i wouldn't even be using the internal wastgate..

ANYWAYS, i got my new kit fitted up!!
