Ok, so I recently just purchased a 89 " coupe with a ca18det swap.with some janky wiring
It was a z32 maf.
the orginal problem i had with this car was, it had a rough idle as well as it was running rich. well one day when I was trying to solve this orginal problem, I tightened the spark plugs. then I revved it up to about 5k and it sounded good. shut the car off then started it back up a little while later. This is when the more frustrating problem occured.

it wouldnt idle and die. so I changed plugs. it idles now BUT wont rev past 2k

Doing some research I tried to see if the MAF(z32) was hooked up properly by listening to the change when it was unplugged. But the shocker was it didnt run or sound any different. I have also checked the compression and it has good compression on all four cyclinders

So currently im triyng to figure out this janky wiring, and if anyone would wanna shed some lite on how they solved this problem or how I can thanks.

Sounds like its running in safe mode..I was having same issues turned out to b the coolant temp sensor was ripped under the loom..hopefully this helps...I also have a ca18 harness pre wired legit straight olug and play into any s13 :) so lmk :) no more jank wiring, also the stock maf wit an apexi filter

Does not rev past approx 2000 is usually a dead MAF (or dead wiring). ECU sees that and goes limp mode. Check ECU codes first, then wiring, then your MAF.

Then check for boost leaks (MAF based engines are very sensitive to that). If you have a BOV, bin it. Most of them leak at idle.

The problem with wanky wirings is they tend to fry what is connected to them... so if the MAF is fried, get a new wiring harness too.

So I ran my ecu for codes. it came back with... (suprise, suprise) code number 12 Mass Air flow meter circuit Wiring fault etc., sensor, ECU No or difficult start, lack of power.

Well ca18 aren't designed for z32maf. how are you accommodating the ecu so it knows what maf you have.

It should not throw a MAF error code with a Z32 MAF anyway, unless the wiring and/or the MAF are fried. It should run like crap if the VE/VQ map has not been changed and the K not adapted though. But it should not throw an error.

A MAF is just a sensor that outputs a 0-5V signal. The ecu sees just that, using a different MAF means changing the meaning of that signal, but it still is a 0-5V signal.

Im not familiar with what that means. but I do know there is an apexi II systems reader installed. The guy who I got the car from said I need to get it tuned

This.

Make sure your maf is getting power and its not broken. Then get a tune, by the way what turbo and Ecu are you running.
