I'm going to be putting in an SR20 redtop soon and I was wondering about if I should get a new clutch while the motor is out

The car will mainly be used for spirited daily driving and drifting maybe once a month in spring/summer/fall

The engine will remain stock for now but I may have goals of 300 whp or so in a year or two.

The guys at the importer shop guarantee'd me that the engine has under 60k miles so I assume the clutch is still somewhat good.

will the stock clutch hold well enough for some drifting this year? I'm just starting out so its nothing too wild. I know the obvious answer would be to change it out but I just dropped 3.7k on the engine, shipping, and parts to go along with it so I'm a bit out of cash. If I were to go with a clutch I might go with a mild exedy clutch, I've haven't heard too much good about ACT.

You need to search man. This has been asked a thousand and one times.

Do you want to put a clutch in now or not? Of course the factory clutch is fine for a factory engine. It's not going to like 300whp, but who cares if that's 2 years away.

You got completely sacked on that engine for 3.7k. I had my 600whp sr for sale as a turn key swap for 6k at one time..

if you plan on clutch kicking alot then no, and its ALWAYS a good idea to replace seals and do engine work while its out and its better for a piece of mind.

I don't think I got too bad of a deal. It was 2.7 for the engine/front clip (didn't exactly get the clip, but everything I need for the swap) from Phase 2 motors, 500 for random aftermarket exhaust piping and oil pan, 400 for shipping. It may be a bit pricy but I guess thats the extra cash I pay for peace of mind. Rather than buying it from some dude here in the states who no doubt whooped the shit out of it drifting.

Haha ^ no shit.

Actually, I don't drift so that wouldn't have been the case with my engine.

I drag race and even still the engine has never seen a track yet. It had about 1400 miles on it and right at $12k in reciepts, built by one of the best builders in the nation hands down, and no expense spared. Front mount, bov, tuned ecu, Precision turbo under warranty, every thing except a chassis for $6k..

I'm not trying to hurt your feelings lol. I think you got ripped for sure, but that doesn't matter now so anyways about this clutch.

I've heard great things about ACT over Exedy, but if you're buying a clutch you need to look into RPS clutches. For an affordable single disc that holds up to 450ft lbs it is the best. Period.

BTW, I have whooped the shit out of a 260hp sr with a factory clutch for a long time with no problems. Not drifting, but slipping the shit out of it off the line on slicks.

Also have a friend with a pile of shit sr that was all factory on 14psi running 8.2's in the 1/8 mile on slicks. Factory clutch.

Just pull it off and look at it. If it ain't worn out then your 200hp sr is not going to hurt it.

No offense but I find it hard to believe that you can get a quality SR20 set up for a good chunk of change less than what I paid. I've looked into it and until I see someone post an actual breakdown of what they've paid, it hasn't happened. Everyone claims this and that, saying they've gotten a killer deal from a buddy, but no one ever posts a breakdown of what they've paid from a retailer. It seems like everyone knocks 20-30% off the price they've paid to impress people.

As for the clutch though, thanks for the advice I'll look into it.

Shit man, I wasn't trying to hurt your feelings honestly. Just informing you in case you're a newb. I don't really want to see any enthusiast get ripped, but since you asked.. I got my swap, complete turn key minus intercooler for $1500 cash. And yes, I think a stock, no telling what the hell condition internals are in, shipped sight unseen, sr20 for almost 4k is a rip. Hell Mattsil80 had a built, 2871, tuned, 411whp complete turn key swap with like 8k miles I think for $4k. Again, I wasn't rubbing it in when I said that. Just exclaiming out loud.

I don't try to impress anyone with how cheap anything was. Fuck, I have over $12k in receipts for my engine IN PARTS. People think I'm sick in the head. They sure as fuck don't applaud it. Unless it's a bandwagoneer and of course they eat the shit up.

you no doubt got it from a friend or someone on the forums. I don't have that. An importer is my only option
