So I did an auto to manual swap in an S14 that had a blown motor. Swapped the new motor in with a manual transmission and just got it to run. It would run at low rpms (no idea what, the tach doesn't work) for a while then there was a clunk and it died.
Checked the compression, nothing on all 4 cylinders.
When I was checking the last cylinder it just locked up. The starter couldn't crank anymore.
I put a breaker bar on the crank bolt and it won't turn clockwise but will rotate counter clockwise.
Took the front cover off and noticed that the bottom part seemed to want to rotate but the upper part was keeping it from rotating
Also the spark plug in cylinder 2 was bent.
I'm thinking the cam gears jumped teeth gradually. First to lose compression and kill the engine, then as I cranked more it jumped enough to cause the piston to slam into the valve. And I think the spark plug being damaged was caused by the valve bending and hitting it.
Am I right?
Also, I messed with the cam gears when the engine was out of the car. I thought I put everything back together correctly but apparently not...How do I put the tensioner on so it doesn't jump teeth again? Its just 2 bolts and thats it right?? Thats what I did
