After sitting like this for the last four years, I started following Pstl_Pete's modified magazine articles and then also found Broadfield's build thread here on Zilvia and got the desire and inspiration to rebuild the car and start enjoying it again. The reason it had sat there for so long, was due to many things in life, but the smog and registration issues every year became too much of an issue to deal with. Pstl_Pete showed an easy way to get a hassle free smog legal solution, so I started gathering info and parts a few months ago.

wow nice car bro.seeing as how clean that sr setup was i can tell this build is gonna be on the same level as pstl_pete and broadfields. im planning on ditching my ka-t setup and going ls3 also.but man is this swap adding up to be pretty expensive.especially the way i want it.good luck with the build and can't wait to see the progress.

My build will be nearer to pstl_pete's. I just don't have the skills nor patience to take it to Broadfield's level. Reading all his posts has been very inspirational as well as educational. I am going to try to do some interior work based on his write-ups.

I hope to be on the road in the next few months as I want to hit the track next summer. That's my GTR and my Z32 TT under the cover.

I have to figure out what shifter to run as the T56 Magnum shifter sits 4" forward of a normal T56. Maybe a Sikky or one that the guy who sold me my transmission is using in his FD.

Got the LS3 Erod on the engine stand.

Flipped the fuel rail 180 degrees so that the fuel line has a straighter shot to the fuel rail. The guys at Fueled Racing suggested this for their kit.

Yes a fun hassle free CARB legal street car that I can drive comfortably to work a couple times a week and then throw some track tires on and do a couple of track days per year.

I like variety and like to drive all my cars on a regular basis throughout the week. I am installing AC this time and might even install some sounds this time.

I am following Pstl_pete with a KW suspension setup. The only downside is that KW would not make a set of rears with the Z32 fork to attach to my Z32 rear knuckles, so I am going back to S13 rear knuckles. This time I am adding SPL front ball joints to square up the front suspension geometry.

I tried working with Fueled Racing on coming up with a service where they would modify the Erod cats or build an adapter mid pipe to go from the exhaust manifolds to the cats. Fueled is developing an exhaust system to bolt up to their swap kits and we were hoping to adapt the Erod to their exhaust system for a truly bolt together system. That fell through so I am trying to figure out how to proceed on the exhaust system.

I am going with a Q45 3.54 rear diff that my friend had sitting in his backyard.

I actually bought the Hooker Headers engine and tranny mounting kit, but changed my mind and now have the full Fueled Racing kit. So far I am really impressed with the well thoughtout kit. Everything seems to be a plug and play bolt on kit. They even will build AC lines, but only if you buy their kit as the lines are based on using their kit. With this kit, you can use your existing front sway bar and don't have to modify (hammer) your transmission tunnel. The fuel lines are plug and play from the tank to the fuel rail and come with the Corvette fuel pressure regulator/filter that is required to pass CARB.

This is going to be a great build. You should look into the PBM rear knuckles. They have all heim joints instead of rubber.

That sounds like a great deal. It's definitely nice to have a fun street car that is track-capable and still legal to drive on the streets. I live in Texas, but dealing with engine setups that don't pass inspection is a real pain in the arse.

I've been looking to do the 1UZ swap myself but more and more after watching you guys (Pstl_Pete and Broadfield) really makes me want to reconsider and just go LSX. It's great to hear you will be doing a full AC install, that ought to be a real nice addition and well worth the added effort!

Good luck with the exhaust issue, I'm sure you'll get it sorted out beautifully! I've also been thinking about going with KW's; I hear nothing but great things from their performance on the track while still maintaining adequate comfort on the street.

A little update from today.

I had new boots installed on these Z32TT and Q45 axles for my Q45 diff swap. I made a mistake last time when I first built the car. I just installed the axles and after a few thousand miles, the boots broke and there was grease all over the underside of my my then recently cleaned and painted chassis.

Ok, I got a little more done today. I am trying to get the rear diff and rear suspension set up so once I drop the motor and tranny in I can just hook up the driveshaft.

Here is the car with the rear end lifted off the lift. I ended up getting an attachment for the lift, so I can do suspension work on it.

Passenger side removed. I forgot that I need new hubs to fit the larger TTZ and Q45 axles. Luckily I still have the Q45 subframe so I will pull the hubs off of that and install them in original S13 uprights.

I may be biased but excellent choice on the motor and setup. :)

It's great to see someone taking time to do things the right way and making this a CA legal car.

I can't wait to see the outcome (especially the AC portion) and if you have any questions by all means don't hesitate to ask!

Pete - Thanks for showing us the light to get to CA CARB happiness.

By the way, I have spent a ton of time researching the AC and found that with the older GM ECU's it can be done, but with the newer GM ECU's and especially the crate motor ECU's, we are fighting an uphill battle. See this link on my findings on our LS3 EROD ECU - silviav8forums.com :: Log in (http://silviav8forums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4960).

I found a site where I was able to download for a nominal fee all the wiring diagrams for a 2008 Chevy Trailblazer that uses the same E67 ECU and same service number of 12636660. So far, I have not figured out how to do an OEM like setup for the AC.

It gets really discouraging when you read this link at efilive.com -http://forum.efilive.com/showthread.php?18045-E67-and-A-C-clutch-request&highlight=E67+AC. I really don't want to mess with custom programs for the ECU.

In the worst case, I will just hook up the AC wiring per this link - http://zilvia.net/f/tech-talk/203040-stand-alone-ecu-c-control.html

I am hopefully sending out all my Nissan and CTS-V AC fittings to Fueled Racing next week so they can fab up my lines. They said it a short 2 - 3 day turn around.

nice 5 bolt axles and shafts.... you selling?

Yes, eventually after the build is complete. I will have a ton of stuff from the SR set up minus the motor. Intercoolers, piping, S14 PS lines, JIC coilover setup Z32 rear hubs to fit the JIC coil overs, etc, etc....

No pics today, but just something that I found a little odd yesterday.

I knew that in order to go to the KW coilovers, I would have to go back to the stock rear knuckles as I had called KW and they would not make a special set of their 240SX rears with the Z32 fork mounts.

I mentioned earlier that I did not realize was that my existing 5 bolt rear hubs would not fit with the Q45 and TTZ rear axles that I need for the Q45 rear diff. Ok no problem as I still had the Q45 rear subframe with the rear knuckles and hubs. I figured since they are using the same size axles, that the knuckles and thus the hub bearings would be the same. Since I had to pull the hubs off of the Q45, I figured I would install some new Z32 TT rear bearings that I have had sitting in my garage for ages. Luckily I checked first and found out that the OD of the Z32 TT don't fit into the Q45 knuckle. The knuckles look identical to each other and both use the same size axles, but the hub bearings are definitely different sizes. In the end, I just installed the Q45 hubs into the stock S13 knuckles with no issues. I just hope the Q45 bearings don't fail in the near future.

Just a quick update as I finally finished off the rear suspension and Q45 diff swap.

Side by side comparison of the 240SX diff on the left and the Q45 on the right.

The front yoke is much larger on the Q45 on the right. The guys at Fueled Racing have a driveshaft for nearly any configuration, so it took only a few days to get the driveshaft. In this case it is a Q45 diff with ABS connecting to a T56 Magnum tranny.

Q45 diff and axles installed. If you do this conversion, make sure you get the bolts for the 6 bolt axles. Unlike the different 240SX configurations that use nuts and bolts to connect the axles to the stub axles in the diff, the 6 bolt axles are actually threaded so you need the bolts that come with the axles to bolt them to the stub axles.

I wanted to see if I can mount the air filter in the same place that I had my air filter for my SR20 mounted. The stock E-ROD filter is big, but it looks like it will fit.

Next step is to install the ACT twin disk clutch and the starter. I think I am going to attach the bell housing and drop it from the top and then install the transmission separately from the bottom. We'll see when we get there.

Actually, that is the air filter I am suppose to use as it is part of the E-ROD engine assembly kit and was the filter that GM used when they passed certification for CARB. That is the beauty and convenience of the EROD package. It comes with the engine, intake, cats, exhaust manifolds, wiring harness, ECU and EVAP box

Actually, when I went to the Ref he said he didnt care about the air filter at all and I could have left my K&N one on (I swapped the GM filter on) but I think each case will always be different.

As I mentioned earlier if worst comes to worst, we can do exactly as you say by the simple AC wiring instructions in this thread - http://zilvia.net/f/tech-talk/203040-stand-alone-ecu-c-control.html

While it would be nice to have the GM ECU to bump up the idle speed and also cut off the AC clutch at high RPM's, I rather have some basic AC working just using the switch on the drier assembly. There is more than enough torque to deal with the AC clutch engaging and I doubt I will be doing much high RPM runs while the AC is on.

I wasn't stating the air filter itself, I was just wonder about intake piping you where going to use to locate air filter in that location. From what I understand ref looks at intake system after the MAF sensor.

SICK BUILD! by the way.

Ok, good point especially since the EROD comes with no piping for an intake. I never actually thought about it as I was just going to use some 4" piping to run the filter to that location. From everything I've read about the referee certification process it seems so random and dependent on the particular referee. Sometimes i think the entire smog laws in Calif are random.

This is off topic, but when I bought my GTR from out of the state and first went to the calif DMV to get it registered, I thought it was a comedy. I first had to have someone at the DMV verify the VIN, make sure it is 50 state smog legal and verify the mileage. That was easy. But then after getting that signed off I went inside to get it registered and the first thing they ask for is my smog test certificate. I said this is a brand new 50 state smog compliant car with less than 50 miles on the odometer. She said I needed a that smog test certificate, otherwise she could do nothing. At least she was nice and said just go down the street to get it tested and come right back to her and then we could proceed. Ok seems simple enough to do, but the first smog station refuses to test my car as they said it is illegal to bring a new out of state car into California. He said I needed more miles on the car. I knew that that applies only to cars that are not 50 state compliant and that these cars have to have a minimum amount of miles on them before they can be registered in calif. I argued with the guy so he finally called someone to confirm, but they backed him up. Ok this is not going anywhere so I go a couple of doors down to a test only station and he doesn't blink an eye and just tests my car and gives me the certificate I need to register my car.

Thats good. When I bought mine at first I had one street and one race disk. After a couple of months of daily driving I pulled the motor for a rear main seal and the race disk significantly ate away the metal surfaces and put deep grooves in the pressure and midplate. I sent it back to get rebuilt and change to two street disks. I did a drift event after installing the street disks then checked them after the event. The white letters printed on the clutch disk where still there and showed no signs of slipping. I have 380 tq and 420 hp.

I did a junkyard run this morning and was able to find a 137K 90 hatchback that took a big hit to the right front corner. I was only looking for AC lines, but ended up taking some clean interior items like the gauge cluster and surrounding trim, the glovebox and the carpet.

I now have all the fittings I need to send to Fueled Racing to assemble my AC lines. In this picture, you can also see the new CTSV AC hoses that I bought to sacrifice the connectors.

Excited to see the AC come together! I realized that with my setup there's no way the stock cylindrical canister (not sure what to call it) will fit in its original location since the coolant hoses are in the way.

I hope Fueled Racing will offer a turn-key solution for the lines.

You are correct, I had the Sikky kit but that shouldnt matter that much. Even if his engine is a bit lower or slighty back more (though mine is as tight as it gets IMO) the routing for the piping will be pretty much the same.

If I recall correctly I used 2.25-inch piping to the first cat since that's the diameter it is then I went to 2.5-inch after the second cat.

I had a couple of hours to look more at the exhaust pipes coming off of the C6 Vette manifolds.

With the motor still out of the car, I was able to see things quite well and cut a section of 2.25" pipe to mock things up. It looks like it is not going to be as difficult as I thought.

The socket and extension are roughly where the steering column will be. I will verify when the motor is in the car before I tack anything in place, but it is looking ok so far.

So this morning I modified some bolts to make two alignment pins.

Things are looking good, but definitely it is going to be a tight fit. In fact, it ends up being too tight to fit. Damm, it is a probably 1/8" on each side. At this point, I figured one needs to pull the exhaust manifolds off to make it fit from the bottom as I recall Pstl_Pete doing. So I called it a day and figured I would pull off the manifolds later this week.

After pulling the motor and tranny out from under the car, I looked at things a bit more and think I can just grind the corner of the exhaust manifold flange and things should just slip by the frame rails. Once they are in there final position, they should be fine as they will be sitting above the frame rails. A total of a 1/4" was all I needed today.

Well, I finally had the time to install the motor and tranny in the car. After my last update, I slightly ground the exhaust manifold flanges on both the driver and passenger side and this gave me just enough clearance to get the flanges past the frame rails.

I was starting to re-install the front suspension, but ran into some issues. The SPL tie rod kit had the wrong size nuts to lock the tie rod together. Then one of the OEM Z32 tie rods has some damaged threads so I could not reinstall the passenger side tie rod. It uses a M16x1.0 thread, which I did not have a die to repair or find one locally. Hopefully I can find one tomorrow to buy or borrow to keep moving forward.

Since the start of the new year, I have been super busy at work and just returned this weekend from a business trip to China. I have not done much work on the 240Sx since the holidays, but when I got back home, I had a couple of boxes waiting for me.

I had this huge box from Japan waiting for me and inside was a brand new never installed OEM Aero bumper. There is even the original installation instructions. The prior owner had it painted, but never got around to installing it, so when I saw it on Yahoo Japan, I just had to get it. I was looking for an uncut one as my current bumper on my car was cut to fit the FMIC, when I was running the SR20DET. And no I am NOT selling my old aero bumper.

I work for a company in the telecomm area. The cool thing is that we just announced we are buying a company in Japan, so I will be spending a lot of time there for the rest of year. I'll have less time to work on my car, but I should be able to find some cool car parts and accessories in Japan.

Also someone mention blowing slaves, My Spec stage 3+ on my 408ci LQ9 build had issues because I forgot the shim that came with the clutch (the lack of instructions didnt help). It causes High RPM shift issues.

Here is what usually happens.

1) You are young and want a car with every mod possible done to it. You buy a $5k car and start buying parts, blow all your money and realise you can't afford to do what you imagine in your head. Then you either part it out or drive around in a half finished piece of shit telling everyone you aint care.

2) You are old enough and in a position in life to modify a car the way you imagined when you were young. You blow all your money and realise you have a family and responsibilities and spending $50k on a $5k car is stupid unless you are a manchild still trying to impress 18yr olds. Then you part it out and go buy a new $50k sports car that has a warranty and is better in every way and less embarrassing than driving a shitbox 25yr old car.

OR you go out and buy a Z06 or GTR for $60K, still impress the 18yr olds but now fall into the midlife crisis crowd where they ask you to attend wine tasting and swinger parties.

I disagree, but that's just me. You don't build a car because you want to make it better than some car that's 10,15,20 years newer. You build it because you want to make it your own.

I'm 31, I make 100k a year plus, my 93 coupe is hardly a shit box in ANY WAY, and I can't care less about some 18 year old kids approval or not. I simply like my car because I do. That's the only reason someone needs to build something.

And if you really need to sell your 25year old "shit box" to be able to afford to have a kid or buy a house... Well you need to re think your life.

Well after 6 years since my last progress post, I am back at it. A marriage, a newborn and a house move put things on hold, but I am pushing to get my 240 back on the road this summer. I had to enlist the help of some friends, but will get this going again. We just mocked one of the most challenging tasks of getting the exhaust/cats routed between the frame and through the steering rack.

Great build! Wish my car looked this clean.

These are the same cats that Pete used as they are part of the GM E-Rod CARB approved crate engine package. In order to pass CARB we have to install all the parts from the engine package, which includes the very valuable CARB exemption sticker.

Just a side note that my friend bought Pete's car and was able to get it smogged using the charcoal canister from my stock E-Rod engine package. My friend eventually sold Pete's car to someone in Hawaii. I got the charcoal canister back so I can get smogged as well when I finish this build.

This is the CARB documentation for the EROD crate engine.
https://ww3.arb.ca.gov/msprog/aftermkt/devices/eo/d-126-30.pdf

This is the CARB EO sticker that comes with the engine
https://i0.wp.com/www.6speedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/IMG_3646.jpg?ssl=1

Of course, you can also find a used LS motor and all the necessary smog equipment and get it approved as well, but the EROD makes it easier, but definitely at a higher price.

Man it's been a long time since an update. Life with a 3 year old takes a toll on you and now with COVID19 things just are barely moving along. Engine is wired up and running. Need to drop the ride height a bit and get it aligned. AC is all hooked up and needs a charge. At least we can drive it in and out of my friend's shop now.

Here are some pics of it with 8 years worth of dirt and dust on it. My BNIB bricks are at home waiting for installation.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50224427711_638a456944_c.jpg

Went with a vented CF hood to get some heat out of the engine bay and compensate for some of the extra weight of the LS3. Hood is going to be painted to match the rest of the car. I am debating on whether to cover up the NACA duct. Also have wider vented front fenders as I really want to run wider tires up front.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/50224427696_56af59025a_c.jpg

When your build gets drawn out for so long like this, the parts that I bought 8 years ago now are dated and newer better parts are available. I have a brand new Tremec Magnum 6 speed trans with a Sikky relocation shifter, but now Tremec just released a newer Magnum 6 speed that doesn't require a relocation shifter. I've seen the review on MotoIQ about this new trans and it is so tempting. It just so happens that my throwout bearing crapped out so I have to pull the tranny anyways. Oh man..............

whats the paint code on the coupe? looks very similar to KG1. my paint has been faded since before i bought mine in 2014 and i've only seen one other car with nice condition paint in that color. anyways, i digress.

beautiful car, excellent build.

Thanks. It is actually a Audi silver - LY7W. When I built the car, my daily was an 2001 Audi S4, which I absolutely loved the silver color.
