View Full Version : SR w/Tomei 260-how smooth?

We just installed a well-built engine we bought from a member here. While hand-turning the engine over, (no plugs) we note that as the cam lobes engage the corresponding intake/exhaust valves, the engine feels very sticky. Then smooth, till the next pair. Is this normal for the work that has been done to the head?

Here are the specs:

3 angle valve job
HKS rocker arm stoppers
HKS valve springs
Crower retainers
Tomei 260 pro cams w/ 12.5 lift
Tomei adjustable cam gears
Bronze ex valve guides

I have limited SR experience, but with the S3 cams on a stock head, we never felt this "bump" as the lobes engaged. Previous owner says valve train has always been noisy after the build, some 4K miles ago. Thank in advance!

Increased valve spring/lift will make it harder to turn over if that's what you want to know...

Thanks- it was difficult to frame my question. When the lobes contact the appropriate valves, the torque required is five times as much, and is a "bump" and not smooth at all.

Previous owner says not to worry, so we'll go with it. I've had large cams in V8's and they never seemed this sticky.

That may be attributed to different cam ramp up profiles and spring rates... Not to mention one less spring to compress...
