ok so i have the rattle coming from the notch on my valve cover. first i thought damnit timing chain!:rant2:. but then i figured vtc rattle is a common problem. i did my reserch and alot people say to test your solenoid it clicks when its engaging which it does, but it also does it in neutral which that could be how my swap when in i guess seein as tho (off topic) my car starts with out pressing my clutch. any who so i bump the throttle on my car barely hiting 1500 to 2000 and it rattles other then that nothing at idle and at high rpm it kinda goes away. so i just now went outside after mooorree reserch and unpluged the solenoid and it goes away completely. now ive seen alot of people on threads arguing its not ever the solenoid its the sprocket. ok i def think i need to replace it. but on the other hand people have talked about cleaning the solenoid??? any input? please help if i need to post a video to help out let me know. OH! and if i do need to replace the sprocket does any one know where to get one for cheap 350$ is kinda not what i had in mind. thanks

Nissan parts.cc had same problem on my s15 , it'd rattle at start up for a bit then once it went over a certain rpm it would disappear until I shut car off then it would keep happening. I replaces the sprocket and it all went away and no more noise.

Courtesyparts.com, thenismoshop.com, 240sxmotoring.com, frsport.com. Be prepared to pay a good amount for a new one. I don't suggest buying a used one, just a bandaid for a wear item.

Hey what about adjustable cam gears and eliminate the vtc? I figured i would newd a tune but what if they were set at the degree of what th vtc changes it too that would pretty much be stock. Or like a constant engagement right?

If you want adjustable gears you're bypassing the main reason of having an S14/S15 engine. The VTC is what makes all the low-end trq on your SR. Without it, your motor is going to make less power than an S13 SR, unless you have a crazy build on it. I personally think disabling the VTC is a stupid idea, keep it, you'll be much happier with it.

Agreed, keep it,exactly what said above, eliminating it?...then you might ass well get a s13motor,i know the nismo shop sells them, onceyou buy the new one,you ll be so much happier

sad for you it is the sprocket. i changed it once, problems solve. lucky me it's cheap back here, usd50-80 used part. never try to clean the solenoid.
