I've been looking at buying a Kaaz, but im not exactly sure what the difference is. If anyone has one or knows something about it could you please post some info?

do you have an Open diff now? or a VLSD now?

2-way for drift......1.5 for autocross...

but either way you cant go wrong haha

nokeone
02-04-2004, 10:06 AM
^^..not really...for autocross you don't really want a clutch LSD..a helical would be more beneficial...

2 way locks on accel as well as decel in equal amounts...

1.5 way locks on accel but less so on decel...

the locking percentage settings for the above two can be adjusted by messing with the internal clutch plates...

VLSD locks on accel only...

nonLSD never locks...

i personally have a Kaaz 2-way and love it...

but as Boosted asked above..if you have open diff now, get VLSD and learn...if you have VLSD make sure you are ready to progress...getting ahead of yourself will only hinder you in the long run and make you dependent on your mods...

I believe VLSDs are two way. Anoyone confirm this? Also, from what I've been reading and researching, majority of drifters prefer the 1.5, because you don't have the full on lock when braking, so less chance of spinning out.

nokeone
02-04-2004, 10:58 AM
interesting..i can't imagine a VLSD is a 2-way but i've been known to be wrong on occasion...i think it's a 1-way though..lol..accel only..and even then only until the fluid gets too hot..then it starts working less and less well...

drifters prefering 1.5?..that would be news to me..i don't see why you wouldn't want it to lock under braking as well...would seem to allow for longer, more controlled drifts if the tires were not releasing mid drift...as for spinning out...learn to control the car and with a solid rear end you wont spin out any more then usual...i mean shit, D1 drivers spin all the time...Nismo SSS is 2-way...Kaaz 2-way...Tomei 2-way...that DeftForce (spelling) thing i think is 2-way...seems like most are 2-ways...

certain cars do work better with 1.5-ways...FC3S for example...Kaaz recommends you get a 1.5 way...helps maintain the balance of the car...

I didn't think the Kaaz 1.5 way was (widely) available anymore.
Models such as the Cusco RS/MZ as well as the Nismo GT Pro offer adjustability between 1.5 and 2 way, although you have to disassemble the unit I believe.

I meant to say on 1.5, don't have full lock on braking, more controlled braking. I've also heard that you can adjust a 1.5 to act like a two way.

DuffMan

You can use a clutch diff for autox pretty effectively, but you have to carefully tune it.

VLSD is 2 way. The viscous fluid doesnt care whether you're accelerating or decelerating or driving backwards.

It does if you are lucky.

Don't get VLSD it wimps out after a lot of usage, so full track days (regardless of what you do), will make it decrease in performance.

No, it doesn't. It's mechanically impossible. Theres a reason its called an "open diff"

But i totally agree with your second statement

Also, one more thing all of you forum junkies, i have an S13 with open diff, will i need new output shafts / back cover when i get the Kaaz?

Well the pinion gears probably have at least some resistance to movement, even if its only inertial and frictional. For that reason, open diff can spin both wheels sometimes. Especially on ice.

As to your question, I think KAAZ makes a version for both now, but I'm not 100% sure on that.

To answer your question, well yes and no.

Newer one is a straight bolt on, no short output shafts required. SAVE LOTS OF MONEY too since it has more plates than old Kaaz.
Old one like mine? well shorter shafts are required.
It costs me nearly 280 for 2 brend new shafts from NISSAN.......

Anyway, good luck.

LSD 1 way. locks up on accell, 1.5 locks up on accell and half way on decell, 2 way locks up all the way on both accel and decell. Kaaz 2 way is the shit IMO for drifting...it is what the pros use anyway :duh:

Hi,
"Solid LSD" is a product version name we use on all our new models
which incorporates more clutch plates than the previous "Power Pot"
series. For example, the new 240 unit uses 16 plates, double the
previous version. This new unit also uses different clutch plate
material and design too, called RS Plate. This new unit is 67%
more aggressive than the previous model but more adjustable.
Most new Nissans, Mazda RX7/8 and Evo rear unit we produce are
all "Solid LSD" version now.

If you plan to road race and drift in the future, save few more bucks and go for the clutch type lsd. It will be better for you in the long run. VLSD will eventually stop functioning under lots of hard usage. You never know the condition of the used ones too.
No matter which brand clutch type lsd you choose to buy, they will all serve your need. Choice between 1.5 or 2 way is up to your preference. Most brand can be converted either way including our unit. Best way is to get the lsd first and then build the car around it to suit your driving style and desired vehicle balance. Once you install the lsd, the basic character of your car will be set. From there you change your suspension and it's set up to tweek the character to your desired setting to match your taste or driving style.
BTW this is just our opinion and method of setting up the car.

Hi,
Power Pot version for 240 is no longer in production. There may be few units still left at the factory but the new ones are all boxed and labeled as Solid LSD.
We have plenty of 240, AE86 and 350z units in stock.
BTW we are the Kaaz US importer/distributor.

I got a question. In other threads I have read that with the Kaaz 2-way you get a rather loud sound when the diff engages. I'm looking at getting a Kaaz 1.5 for autocross but the car is also my daily driver, so I was curious if the 1.5 made all the noise as well. lol I dont want my car to sound like its falling a part, which is how ive heard it described.

to kaaz usa staff,

I believe my vlsd is going out and Im in search for a new or used clutch lsd...I dug up a REALLY REALLY old "import racer" magazine(vol. 5, jan 04) that had you guys in it. You guys installed a kaaz 2way for "import racer's" project irps13... I was reading it the other day and it was installed buy Ray Nakade and Saji. In the article, Saji set the clutch plates so that it would lock 75-80%(ABABABBA gears ABBABABA) because this was going into a daily driver car. I know the install was on the older 8(clutch plate) kaaz unit, but I was wondering how would something like thse be done with the newer "solid lsd" units? Is it the same method? do you guys include instructions on how to do it? Also, I've heard that the older kaaz units can use any 80w90 gl5(non synthetic) gear oil; can the new "solid lsds" take the same oil or does it have use kaaz gear oil? I'm either thinking about getting a used(older version) kaaz from someone or just get a new one since i have abs/vlsd(shorter driveshaft) :(

thanks, btw, that article is very helpful!

one more question, before I go out searching for a clutch lsd, you guys dont plan on having a gb anytime soon, huh?

Its easy to just say
autox= hlsd or 1.5

But what if you want to do both but dont have truckloads of money:ugh:

I couldnt find any definate response on how people like the 1.5 diff for DRIFTING... im bout to make a new thread on it:madfawk:

accept the fact that you don't have truckloads of money and that attempting to do all the things you want with a limited budget will yield compromises across the board

this is reality: cars are expensive, having fun with them can be very expensive.

1.5-way and 2-way are both fine for drifting. 1.5-way is very common. It just depends on your driving style and preference. Even Haruguchi (and quite a few other famous D1 drivers) used a 1-way LSD. If you don't know who Haruguchi is, do a search...

Ok, lets unearth this thread.
I know what a LSD is, i know the difference between a 1.5 and a 2 way LSD, both mecaniqually and theorically.

Now what it will change in the comportement of the car, especially, when lifting off the accel pedal, will the car begin to hard oversteering !! especially in a curve or it will lock so the car will begin to understeer because there is no open diff at this moment.

Other question, will it be hard to daily drive a 2 way LSD car equipped ?

I just want to say that I had great customer support over at Kaaz. They installed a S15 HLSD into my S13 open diff. They went above and beyond in customer support. I highly recommend them. If I ever decided on getting a cluth type LSD I will definitely be getting one from them.

this thread is packed to the brim with retarded

helical diff (quaife, s15, torsen, etc) are stupid because, basically, they randomly bais power to the left or right wheels depending on how much load is on each wheel. and they never lock, they only apply torque based on ratios, so you never have a fully locked situation. and if you pick up a wheel, it will just spin it, ie open diff. junk.

"VLSD locks on accel only..."
wrong, a vlsd works by having viscous fluid create drag on plates attached to each axle. when one side speeds up (ie the one wheel is doing a burnout) the fluid drags on it to slow it down. obviously if you are braking and you lock a wheel or whatever, the fluid will drag on the other wheel etc.

"nonLSD never locks..."
a "nonlsd" would be like a solid beam with a sproket on it and a chain to drive it. all cars have lsds.

"if you have open diff now, get VLSD and learn..."
fuck that. why would you waste money on somthing that sucks. you basically have to re learn how to drive after you get a good diff anyway.

1.5 dosent give more controlled braking, it gives less controlled braking. oinly point of 1.5 way is if you cant drive and the wheels locking in the rear causes you to plough, its a little less noticable with a 1.5. thats the only reason these exist. i dont know how anyone could possibly plough under braking in this manner, considering there is like no grip on the rear under heavy braking. like every race (ie. not drift) car worth a shit either runs a 2 way or a spool. wheels locked under braking = more stability.

"is there such thing as a 3 way"
yes, a welded diff or a spool is locked uner accel, decel, and clutch in, 3 way.

"lol I dont want my car to sound like its falling a part"
yeah man stick with the open diff. the car show judges give negative points about how your diff sounds. seriously who gives a shit about some grandma frowning at you at a grocery store because she thinks your "hot rodding".

I'd like to point out that Super GT (JGTC) and other GT cars run Spool diffs now. 125cc Shifter carts have a solid rear axle and a sprocket attached to it (no diff). SO saying that a 2-way is bad for grip driving bewilders me.

The difference felt between a 1.5 and 2 way is almost none, btw.

Having little first hand experience with clutch types, question for the experts (preferably in grip):

Doesn't driving technique influence whether a 1.5/2way/helical will be advantageous?

If you do lots of trail braking (brake into turn), and the 2 way kicks in full force on decel, would that not result in understeer? But some one that does all his braking before the corner ...1.5 and 2 way would feel the same? Am I correct?

Ludo_FC3S

Ludo, who doesn't heel and toe on downshifting? That shouldn't even be a factor. It should just be assumed.

You guys need to realize that it all differs on the course that you are on. Tight autocross courses versus a course like Big Willow is a whole different ball game when it comes to the choice of diff you will be using.
