View Full Version : RB25 in S chassis intercooler and BOV questions

I want to use the greddy intake manifold, but also the stock ecu for now, so I will be putting the MAF directly behind the intake before the turbo and then recirculate the BOV (as opposed to a blow through setup). Assuming this all makes sense, I have some questions.
Are there any 'kits' for doing this or am I going to have to make something custom? The only one I've found is this: eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190478087104#ht_7192wt_1163), which I guess is the same as cxracing (http://www.cxracing.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=CXR&Product_Code=KIT-RB-GT28-IC0022-BOV9&Category_Code=ICKNS) the price and general lack of information kind of scares me away from it though. Could a SR20 or KA24DET kit be easily modified to fit?
If I do go custom, does it matter if the recirculating BOV is on the hot or cold side of the intercooler? The stock setup recirculates from the cold side to the intake between the MAF and the turbo. If I did this same setup with the greddy intake and FMIC and have the BOV on the cold side, do people just run a long piece of hose from the BOV to the turbo intake? What if I put the BOV on the hotside of the intercooler and recirculated to the turbo inlet? Any difference?
What about other vacuum lines and the large 'air hose' coming out of the intake cold pipe on the stock set up?
Any other information on the subject would be awesome and I appreciate the help.

That CX Racing kit looks like it would work, but kinda sketchy at the same time.
I'm actually going to be doing this exact same thing when I do my mini-build this summer with a "custom" setup using an S14 intercooler core I got and some piping from Syko performance. I also want to keep the system recirculated and, like you said, my idea was to simply run a longer hose from the BOV (which would be on the cold pipe right near the throttle body) across to the turbo intake pipe like on the factory setup . Another idea was to mount the BOV on the hotpipe (which I don't particularly like), thus shortening the length of that larger hose and not having it cross, but that would then lengthen the smaller diameter-ed one leading into the intake manifold. Either way, it looks like one hose or another would have to be snaked across the motor somehow. You could mount the BOV on either the hot or cold pipe, but my choice would be to put it on the cold pipe since that's where it's located from the factory and I'd like to keep it the way it was originally engineered to avoid problems. Sucks because there isn't much if any information out there on this particular method, as most people seem to go with atmospheric venting :-/ I'll keep you updated if I find anything or come up with any other ideas/possibilities.

i cant make something like this for you. this is my setup. kinda like a pbm high mount. my piping is shorter than any kit on the market.
i have close to zero lag with this setup..

Appreciate your input and that's a nice-looking setup you have, but that doesn't really touch on what we're talking about here.

do you read? he was talking about going with a cxracing kit or custom. i have a greddy plenum. so im showing him what a custom could look like. you act like your the OP? im confused.
offering my experience and my input. if he liked my setup i was going to tell him how to do it as my hot pipe and cold pipe in a normal setup did not require any welding.. mine did because i changed a few things.
my intercooler setup cost LESS than what a cxracing kit does too. thought that might be a point of interest.
im all about being the guinea pig with new ideas and parts and sharing my experiences so people dont go through the same turmoil that i do. i like saving people a lot of time and hassel.
all it takes is a credit card to buy a cheap thrown together, hardly fit, chinese intercooler off ebay. but it takes a brain to put something to get together yourself that works for you exactly how you want it.
i see you are one of those people that just buys shit and maybe installs shit themself. maybe you pay someone to do it for you.
either way its not your thread? again. im confused.
as far as the BOV is concerned OP, it doesnt matter what side you put it on. think outside the box. look at nissan turbo 4 cylinders like srs and cas. bov is right on the hot pipe. if you think about it, design wise, with the crossover type factory intake manifold. It just made more sense. you wont understand until you understand why you run a bov and how it works. then you will understand, that it really doesnt matter..

Before my swap, I did a lot of research on intercoolers as I have the same setup (Greddy intake+stock turbo). I didn't find anything that would work bolt on. I just modified the Greddy kit I had for my SR (trust me, not simple modification, think changing everything just using the piping).

Thanks for your inputs guys. I think the reason for having the BOV on the cold pipe is preferred is so when the throttle body closes you dont get a pressure surge back through the intercooler/couplings/piping before it gets to the BOV if it was on the hot side, however like CH points out SRs and CAs put the BOV on the hot side, which is contradictory.
omgRWD, I agree with you about not venting to atmosphere with a MAF setup on stock ecu, plus when the BOV recirculates the turbo spools faster.
CH, I've read through your build thread before and I think the stuff you have going on is awesome. Your IC piping is really short and simple which I love but I also think that's a product of your custom front end :)
This is my first 240 and I think doing tubs and chasis modification might be biting off a little more than I can chew at this point. Maybe next year.
I am going to get the motor into the car next month. Then decide what I am going to do about the intercooler. I'll probably get it mounted then cut some piping and take it into work to get welded.
I wonder how much Zilvia would hate me if I bought the, probably China Quality Egay CXRacing kit, even if it was for scientific purposes. :D

prime, my radiator sits in stock location. heres food for thought!!
the greddy plenum is angled at a perfect 45 degree away from the engine. in order to meet up with a normal intercooler like mine, you need EXACTLY a 135 degree bend. a 45 to straighten it back out and a 90 to wrap around the radiator. 90+45 is 135. also the 135 degree bends are cheap and readily available. check out Intercooler Pipe Fabrication - Silicone Intake Systems Auto Parts (http://www.siliconeintakes.com)
i just cut the bend to length and welded beads. to keep the couplers from blowing off. very effective and cheap.

I just made this intercooler kit for a customer with a stock ecu. It uses the factory intake pipe, all oem PCV,IAC setup and recirculatory BOV. This car will run on the stock ecu with no check engine light. This core is good for 400hp and I run a similar setup on my race car with a core that supports 600hp and have zero lag. If you have any questions about the setup just shoot me a PM.

CommentsYes, I can read...can you? Because I'm pretty sure he was asking more about where to mount and how to plumb a recirculated BOV rather than just what kind of intercooler & piping to use. Nowhere did I try to act like OP, I'm merely in the same boat as him at the moment regarding the same situation. My bad if you took my previous comment the wrong way.
Anyway PrimeDirective, while I'm sure that CX Racing kit can work, be aware that there may be issues with fit and finish. I'm currently running the God(-awful)speed RB25 FMIC kit with the hot+cold pipe on the same side and it took some effort to get it to work. Something to the tune of omitting one of the pipes completely and needing a 45ยบ coupler additional to the kit, modification of the mounting brackets, as well as some "persuasion" of both the core and piping to connect up properly. This is partly the reason why I chose to run a proper-fitting "custom" front mount setup with a dedicated S14 core and piping specifically for the GReddy intake manifold. You can get the piping from Syko or McKinney and just find a used S-chassis core like I did and have at it :)

I got the cx-racing fmic kit on my rb25 that has the greddy style intake manifold and let me tell you it sucks. The intercooler is too big and and i used half the piping they provide and used the stock smic piping for the rest. I am in the process for saving up for a custom IC setup. I can hear it now "you get what you pay for", lol. Lesson learned,if i were you i would buy some 2.5" aluminum or steel piping take it to a reputable fab or exhaust shop and probably get something a little bit nicer.
