Guys
Its been a LOOOONNGGG time since I've posted here, but I've got the itch to do a build over the spring/summer.
The plan is to keep the 5.3 stock with the exception of some supporting mods (rod bolts, head studs, HG's, Z06 cam, etc) and try to make ~500rwhp.
I picked up the car on 3/17/2012 -
Details:
1993 S13 SE Coupe
Sapphire Blue
120k Miles
5spd
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/Booztd3/S13%20LS%20Turbo%20Build/1993_S13_1.jpg
This car is the most solid S13 I've seen personally in a long time (for Central IL anyways) Virtually no rust, rockers/rails are perfect and completely unmolested with the exception of a blitz Nur-Spec cat-back. The hood clearcoat is peeling but the rest of the car is in real good shape. The engine was hydrolocked, the owner let it go for real cheap!
I only had time to pick up the car on Saturday and had to get back home so its still sitting on the trailer. I hope to get the car back home this weekend and start pulling the engine. I'm rather motivated to get this car done so hopefully things will be accomplished on a quick time frame.
I picked up the engine on 3/15/2012, it had 90k miles out of an 01' silverado
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/Booztd3/S13%20LS%20Turbo%20Build/53_Engine_1.jpg
I've been eyeballing turbo setups and I'm seeing people are having good luck with the on3 76mm turbos (which come with a cheap price tag) so I may end up going that route combined with the truck manifolds that are already on my engine.
Not 100% sure on what I'm going to do for mounts. I'd like to just fab them but the time savings and no hassle/haggle of the kits makes it an attractive option
This will be a 6spd car (T56) that'll mainly serve as a street bruiser, but I'm sure a few drag strip outings will happen as well.
Those of you that may be familiar with me know I'm pretty thorough. I'm looking forward to learning the platform and the engine and gaining some knowledge from you guru's currently present

More engine teardown tonight.... Since I plan on doing headgaskets and studs the heads have to come off, and might as well pull the cam too...

Oil pan off, checked the rod caps, no excessive play noted. I'll likely throw some rod bolts in it since the pan is off

Some buildup on the piston tops but crosshatching is still on all of the walls....looks about like a 100k mile engine to me

What an evening......much progress made....
Me and a friend picked up the car to bring it back to the garage....and I got right to work...
Unmolested.....

Part of the way through I wanted to see how well the engine bay would clean up, so I did a small area with some simple green....
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/Booztd3/S13%20LS%20Turbo%20Build/2af5e08c.jpg
I got the engine about 3/4 of the way up out of the engine bay and my cherry picker took a complete crap on me. One of the seals pissed all of the fluid out, so that was a little bit of a hiccup but 6 total hours and a few cuss words later...

Busch light is not my first choice but I found it in the garage fridge immediately following the engine pull.
I like simple green but it tends to leave a film after use.....I've been using this stuff called "RAM" I got from a friend who was in collision repair for a long time but unfortunately I can't find anyone that sells it currently.

Nice, I removed mine to make it easier for the painter to get into the bay to reach all the nooks and crannies. Then again I had all my suspension off as it was so it was logical to pull everything. It was just a suggestion anyway, everything looks nice, I really need to make my build thread.

After looking at some different things, I may actually end up taking the subframe out anyways. After seeing a pic from another forum member, it looks like it may be way easier to remove the subframe and sway bar and install the engine from the bottom side

Make sure you have the steering rack on the crossmember when you do try to install it, otherwise you'll be dropping the member or hoisting the engine to get it in, ask me how I know...

The 5.3 is found in basically every 1500 series Silverado and also yukons, etc...basically anything on the 3/4 ton platform. They did not start offering the L33 until 2005 which is when they started offering the Flex Fuel vehicles. I had an 05 Silverado with the L33 and I loved that truck......sold it to get my 335i however

Got a little time after the family festivities. I got the front end way up in the air and pulled the front subframe.
The plan is to dolly the engine/trans under the car and hoist it up into place rather than go in from the top

Another suggestion, lower the car down on to the crossmember. Then you can jack the car back up to where you'd like. Don't forget the universal steering knuckle.

Have you decided which turbo headers you're going to use? A lot of the cheap bastards on ls1tech.com flip the truck cast iron headers upsidedown. The LS2 GTO, and LS6 cast headers flow better but stick out too far. I've always wanted to do a twin turbo set up witht the stock LS7 headers because they are a great stainless twin wall design with a nice flat flange, but I'm afraid that the D shape port will not mate up to the heads well when upside-down. Or is there some hot-side kit that you're considering.
Timing chain, rod bolts, and cam springs... looks like you've got the long block covered. Only thing I might add for cheap insurance though, is new lifter trays, and an LS2 timing chain guide.
Looking forward to the build. I heavily debated between a non-forged turbo 5.3 and an N/A heads/cam stroker build for quite a while. The power and cost are about the same. The N/A route is lighter and probably more reliable, but turbos shure are fun, and look and sound cooler!

I am doing the budget truck manifold setup. The plan is to cut off the current flanges and weld on some V-bands. There are some prefab collector>turbo flange pipes I'll likely make use of and I'll probably integrate a flex section right under the crank pulley
I am pulling the trigger on a TIG/Plasma Cutter today so hopefully the ehxaust/IC piping will not be that big of an ordeal
I'll probably keep the lifter trays, the same guy who gave me the 10k mile lifters also gave me his trays...

Yes sir that's what I was refering to... The splines will only line up one way so no worries of getting it misaligned, the flat portion is there to allow the bolt to slide across te shaft to the nut.

I noticed theres a machined groove in the chassis side of the shaft and there are 2 locator lines machined into the u-joint. I paint marked it out of habbit because on some of the other cars I've worked on there's nothing to indicate orientation.....its frustrating getting it all back together to find out the steering wheel is off by a spline, lol

I'm pretty sure that the truck manifolds are cast iron (hard to weld for reliability), and not cast steel. If you're going that way you might be better off just using stock style flanges, plus you'll save a good amount of cash (v-bands are expensive).
But then again now that you've got a tig, maybe it's time to go full fab on the headers? Thos truck headers are a pretty shitty log design.

I'd highly reccomend keeping the pro 5.0. It has an adjustable spring assist that helps prevent missed 3rd gear shifts that is missing in the stock shifter. I believe that it sits in the same exact location as the stocker too, so there's no location benefit to going back to stock.
If you want a better shifter location you can make a simple extension. Here's the over engineered one I made on the mill
http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i70/SicBastard/jan10012-1.jpg
Before I made that I was considering the GTO T56 shifter. It's way cool and really is further back! Only reason I didn't go this route was that I wanted to keep the spring loaded mechanism of the pro 5.0, and to have a little more customization as to the exact location of the shifter.

Yesterday I picked up a "411" ECM. I dont remember exactly what year they are out of but it will work with the 99-02 LS1 harness and ECM connectors. The use of this ECM opens up a lot of tuning options including different operating systems that run soley on speed density (eliminating the MAF)

Stellar work so far man, coming from someone who has owned a car with a T56, I'd like to suggest an MGW shifter for your trans. THE BEST quality, support, and most importantly, SHIFTING on the market today. They are infinitely adjustable and reach back perfectly, you'll never come close to the dash even on the hardest 3rd gear shifts. Look them up, see for yourself. Whatever you decide I will say I reccomend staying away from the pro 5.0, not to shit on anyones opinion here, but I have owned and driven atleast 4 cars with some iteration of a pro 5.0 shifter and they were all notchy, finnicky and down right miserable in my opinion. But hey this is your build, and you're doing damn good so far :bigok:

A friend with an LS/RX7 has the MGW so I'm looking for an opportunity to check it out. Honestly the only reason the Pro5.0 is going in is because it came free with the trans. I'd have honestly been OK with using a stock shifter for the timing being!

I dont have the equipment (note one regulator) for a proper backpurging setup. I've tried to minimize all of the crap on the backside, but I've got a few ideas to clean it up once the pieces are finalized. I may end up getting a new regulator this week anyways because it looks like the one I have is leaking at the relief valve. I've managed to go through almost an entire 135cu/ft bottle of argon over the weekend.
I dont have many more pics but I do have this...

I'm really trying to dial in the settings on the welder and get it to using the lowest possible amperage but I am def struggling with getting the technique down. Another thing I am having difficulty with is the foot pedal - I've had 3 surguries on it and I've lost alot of mobility with it. Its good for mashing the go-pedal but varying the pedal angle is quite difficult so I've switched to my left foot which is certainly difficult when you're right handed. I went back with some adjusted settings tonight on a practice piece and came up with this
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/Booztd3/S13%20LS%20Turbo%20Build/0d1db9bc.jpg
Need to figure out what adjustment to make so I dont get the fisheye at the finish-bead. I have it everytime. I might try bumping up the end amps...

Use more rod and that fish eye will go away, another thing you can do is back off on the pedal slowly when youre at the end of the weld.
If you don't have the right reg for purging you can buy some stuff called solar flux. It's a powder you mix with water to make it a paste. Once its a paste you brush on to the inside of the pipe and it prevents the sugary, stalactite build up from occurring, acting as a shielding gas.

The fan I really liked is from a 3.8L Taurus which many RX7 guys rave about. It supposedly flows in the lower to mid 3000cfm range. The problem I am faced with is that it can only be setup as a puller (sits between engine and the radiator) and the fans are directional. By putting the fan where I did, it looks like I'm going to have to make some kind of secondary shroud in front of it to keep the air generated by forward movement out of the way of the fan (which would be a little combatitive.) I think I can make it work, and I'm more compelled to considering the extra space I have now in front of the radiator and the fan doesnt really block anything

Sell your Koyo and buy a radiator that will fit under the core support. It'll resolve your clearance issues. Chasebays sells what you need.

It may resolve my clearance issues but that doesnt go to say it will adequately cool my setup. I'd rather work around clearance issues than having something that looks pretty but cant keep up on a hot day.
I may end up getting rid of this taurus fan and picking up a 16" SPAL pusher now that I know I have the clearance

Ls2 pump is a lot thinner and may solve your clearance issues. But then you have to use corvette offset accessories (3/4" closer than f-body).

This same suggestion popped up on a local forum as well. I was told I could simply machine the alternator bracket, and then migrate to a vette pulley and same offset tensioner. I am not sure how the power steering bracket setup would work though.
At the same time, If I decide to just make something to run an actual pusher fan, I'm pretty comfortable with the space I have up in the front of the engine without anything on the front of the radiator

Pusher fans are usually far from optimal just because the fans' e. motor blocks a good amount of surface area. Another option is to stay with your f-body ps and alt brackets and space the LS2 wp out 3/8", which is just enough for the belt to align w the f-body stuff but still give you ~1" more clearance for the fan.

I was not happy with the way the turbo hotside was plumbed because I tried to cut as little off the pipes as possible. Due to this, the pipes wanted to hit the lower powerbars . I would have needed to space them down about 1/2" which isnt what I wanted to do....
So tonight I went to work fixing that. I cut about 1/2 to 3/4 off each side of the lower "U" bend and started fitting it up
(nevermind that hole I blew through one of the pipes :D)
Here's the gap I had to span
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/Booztd3/S13%20LS%20Turbo%20Build/67c3d197.jpg
I got to thinking "now how could I find the best way to mock up this pipe instead of cutting and grinding a million times. Its a rather primitive idea but I think contains a spark of genius, lol. I took this Mt. Dew bottle....
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/Booztd3/S13%20LS%20Turbo%20Build/f802d705.jpg
Cut it up, you can see the round part barely slips over the size pipe I'm working with....
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/Booztd3/S13%20LS%20Turbo%20Build/5d1c616c.jpg
Now how to get it snug? Cut it down the middle! It naturally curls itself up making it tighter
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/Booztd3/S13%20LS%20Turbo%20Build/0ef2c73a.jpg
Then I put it on the pipe
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/Booztd3/S13%20LS%20Turbo%20Build/42c19b98.jpg
Next I traced the outlines of where I could see through the pipe (not pictured) I then wrapped it around the middle of a 90 and traced the outline of the plastic. I shit you not I made two cuts on either side of the 90 and would up with this....

Made some more progress tonight. I had to get real creative with the joint on the collector that tails over to the driver's side. Initially when I was welding it at the seam by the collector it was significantly difficult to get to because its on the backside and I ended up putting a hole in the pipe. After hours of trying to fix it I said F it and cut the pipe back off and took a little different approach.
I finally got it welded on and worked on connecting the driver's side again....
I had to make several cuts to a 90 bend to get it to sit how I wanted on the bottom...I ended up with this....

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/Booztd3/S13%20LS%20Turbo%20Build/92bc93ae.jpg
Something clicked tonight and I was jamming out on some pretty "low amperage" welds. I think it was a combination of significantly better pre-cleaning of the pipes, and ensuring all 360 degrees butted up against the pipe. On this section of pipe I used zero filler rod....

Got the crossover pipe where I wanted and sectioned for a v-band. I decided to remove the flex section and just directly connect them. I plan on putting some solid rod against the turbo flange connecting it to the bottom part of the turbo piping to brace it

While waiting on the rest of the exhaust parts I decided to work on the fuel system this weekend. Started off by removing the lines, pulling the bulkhead, and draining the old gas.
I'm going to run a big in-tank pump (aeromotive 340LPH) so I'm going to be mixing some AN fittings and upgrading from 5/16 to 3/8 line. Also the pump needs some heavy gauge wiring to it which would not be possible with the factory nissan bulkhead. So I decided to build my own...
Started off by taking a blank Z32 bulkhead as a template
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/Booztd3/S13%20LS%20Turbo%20Build/f25ce971.jpg
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/Booztd3/S13%20LS%20Turbo%20Build/2733be4d.jpg
I plasma cut out the piece and then ground it smooth and drilled the holes. Test fit...
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/Booztd3/S13%20LS%20Turbo%20Build/95447997.jpg
Instead of building the fuel pump/fuel level pedestal, I decided to rob the stock one off the bulkhead
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/Booztd3/S13%20LS%20Turbo%20Build/71be5bc8.jpg
Then welded it to my new bulkhead
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/Booztd3/S13%20LS%20Turbo%20Build/00c0710d.jpg
You can see a few pics up the stock bulkhead is recessed up about 3/4 of an inch so I chopped the pedestal, took off what I needed, and welded it back up
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/Booztd3/S13%20LS%20Turbo%20Build/dd071b15.jpg
Test fit up the level sending unit and stock pump
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/Booztd3/S13%20LS%20Turbo%20Build/b441fd5d.jpg
Can't do anymore until the pump comes in and I can drill this bulkhead for the 90 deg AN fittings and the 4 electrical connections (pump, sending unit)
I then spent some time massaging the shifter bezel so the shifter boot and everything works well. I plan on finding a mustang shift knob, I believe there are some with the correct shift pattern on the knob

Can someone plz explain this mentality to me. Is it the inherent smootheness or compactness of the design? The reliable massive torque? And with the right valvetrain they can spin over 9000rpm. I hear this all the time on zilvia, and just don't get it.

If it makes power, I like it....I dont get too wrapped up in all the V8 vs non V8 talk. My RB26 powered 300ZX makes over 700rwhp, I build a 600awhp Evo, I DD a FBO 335i, and have built a number of other large HP cars for people...including SR'd S13/S14's and they are "OK"
I wanted to give the V8 thing a shot because its something I've never messed around with. After being in the turbo world for over 10 years I figured double the displacement from what I'm used to plus a turbo in the mix cannot equal a bad time :)
I cannot put a price on the skills I've acquired over the last few months putting this car together, all the fabrication stuff I've learned lately will pay dividends for the rest of my life.
Picked up the heavy duty submersible fuel line for the fuel pump setup tonight....got the whole pump assembly wrapped up and installed in the car

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/Booztd3/S13%20LS%20Turbo%20Build/4b9bff68.jpg
it would have been installed last night but I dropped the flange and it put it a little out of round. Normally it would have not been that big of a deal but that BOV uses a very tight tolerance C-Clip inside the flange and its already a bitch to install. I'll be ordering a new flange tomorrow.
Today I got the fuel system completed. Secured the lines using some nifty clips and then I put some fresh gas in the tank, primed the system, and checked for leaks....all good.

I then fixed some fitment issues I wasn't 100% satisified with the exhaust, and then welded the WB02 bung on and fitted up the sensor.

I also got my Tial 44mm wastegate in the mail
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y96/Booztd3/S13%20LS%20Turbo%20Build/56edc890.jpg
At this point there is a dwindling list of things to do:
1. Install Sparkplugs, wires, boots, and coils
2. Weld on BOV flange and bungs for vacuum lines
3. Install Battery Box & Battery, Run battery lines to the front
4. Engine Harness & Fan Wiring
5. Weld on flange for wastegate & route the dump tube
6. Run the turbo oil feed
7. Bleed the clutch & brakes
8. Get the lower radiator hose figured out
Depending on homework this week, and how much trouble the wiring gives me there is potential it may start up without antifreeze next weekend...

Had to backpeddle a little bit yesterday. For some weird reason i was laying in bed the other night thinking about the car and something hit me about whether or not I cleaned the pan out after welding the bung on to the oil pan for the turbo oil return. I stuck a magnet down through the hole and found some small pieces so I had to pull the pan and clean it out...

what size are the fuel send and return lines? also what type of hose did you use?
also what gauge wires did you use to wire up that aeromotive?
finally how much whp you think that pump will flow?
Dope rides, dope build and you don't seem like a douche. This thread is a winner.

screamer pipe eh?
Open dump is the way to go....dual 44mm dumps on my 300ZX and I love it. Its quiet when cruising around, and throw some boost at it and things get roudy....

-6 Both Feed and Return. -6 is the same size as the factory GM 3/8" line and there are plenty of 500-600rwhp setups on that sized line
The aeromotive has 10 gauge wires coming directly from the harness on the pump to the bulkhead fittings, and then 10 from the bulkhead to the relay which is not yet run
Not exactly sure what it should flow to, kinda dependent on base pressure which I've yet to figure out what I want to run. It should be enough for what I need however

Now the fun really begins with the wiring. I'm not sure how I want to go about supplying the harness ignition power, I am thinking of doing off of the stock ignition relay.

I'm fighting an electrical issue right now in the chassis harness. One of the relays for the chassis stuff is staying open and backfeeding the other relays with power which in turn is keeping power to the ECM. If I tap on one of the relays under the dash it unlatches.....I swapped it with another and it still does it so I'm a little confuseled....

Here's a video of it running. I dont have any PCV stuff hooked up and the logs show it pretty rich with no-load revving, so its a little smokey

Next I'll be working on getting the cooling system buttoned up so I can actually get it rolling and any issues that pop up ironed out. After that I'll make the move to the bigger injectors and its on to the dyno....

Well here we are almost a month later, been making good progress on a lot of little ticket items.

I was faced with an issue trying to get an intake air temp sensor installed. The factory sensor uses a clip in style plastic connector and I have no provision for that. So, I welded in an aluminum bung in the lower IC pipe and installed an AEM IAT. I then recalibrated it within the tune

Made it to the dyno today. All in all, everything went well, but there is some speculation about the numbers. The dyno was rented out previously and we are wondering if some settings we're not familiar with were changed.
The baseline pull barely made 260rwhp (Enough to cause speculation), and after we got the car squared away it made 390rwhp/440rwtq @ 10psi on pump gas. The way the speed comes up on the dyno, and the fact that this thing absolutely rips on the street have me wondering about the numbers....I drove it around tonight and its spinning the ET Streets all the way through 1st, 2nd, and some of 3rd.

The car is still a "BAMF" have had 0 problems with it, fires on the first revolution even in our shitty 20 degree weather. It is running a little richer now that its cold out but still runs great.
I've got my eye on a nice 335i and I want to pay cash for it, selling this is my quickest avenue
