Ok guys this is my second rb25 s14.... First one was just minor bolts ons like exhaust, boost controller, air filter, etc bc it was truly a daily.
This rb car I have now is more of a toy now that I have two other cars I can drive on the daily.
What the car has now is... Freddy intake mani, greddy bov, tigged piping to a greddy front mount. It has a safc II tuner, unknown downpipe, exhaust shop type of exhaust with can on back. Ordered a hks evc-s electronic boost controller.
Parts that I want include;
Q45 tbody
Injectors
Hks fuel rail
Tuned ecu or stand alone on some what of budget though
Real exhaust
Turbo upgrade
Waste gate
Short throw shifter
Clutch
Etc etc
What kind of inexpensive turbo can I run that's better than stock but will make decent power with stock internals, and not much on the tuning side.
Think hard on an hx35 turbo with obx top mount?!?!?

What kind of HP numbers are you wanting to make? I'm currently in the process of putting a hx35 on the stock turbo manifold (manifold has a t3 flange welded onto the stock flange location to space the turbo away from the mani and also has been modified for an external wg). That with STI 550cc injectors and a nistune ecu. i already have a full 3" exhaust and a freddy plenum. this is a fairly cheap setup that can put me well over 400whp. nistune-$500, injectors-$250, HX35-$250. Tial WG-$150.
Do lots a research on parts before you buy, ESPECIALLY turbo manifolds.

^^^Post up pictures when you get it in. I'm curious to see how much space you have between the turbo and strut tower. Just doesnt seem to have a whole lot of space under there.

Are you running a z32 ecu? I've 2 different stories one saying you can't nistune an rb ecu and others say you can.....

i have a series 2 motor so i will be running a1990 na z32 ecu. there's lots of room next to the motor. thats why im going to run the stock manifold its not top or bottom mount. more mid-mount if anything.

you right theres not. reason i spent the extra money on a different manifold. sits it between 1st and second runner at an angle. have awesome clearence between valve covers, strut tower, bmc AND had plenty of room to fab up a full 3inch down pipe with no clearence issues on steering rack. i have used those cheap manifolds before and the hassle wasnt worth it. im also interested in seeing pictures
edit: turbo isnt an HX but a gt30 single ball

check out this guy's setup. there's lots of room when you use the stock manifold. just gotta have some fab skills to make the downpipe and dump.

yes and here is yet another thread showing how much space is there, you just have to know how to utilize it effectively. He also has a few pics of using the stock manifold and how to modify it. This guy is my hero lol

My car is going to be more of a street car which here in "mexico" we street race in the late evenings. But I still want driveablility to which the wife can get in and drive to school on a Friday if she wanted to. The car might see some track time with some friends as they some what road race in classes.
Just want reliablility, durability, and funability

oh snap. i wouldve never guessed you could cram that thing in there. but to answer you question about putting an hx35 on an obx top mount my first response fits lol.

i got the holset because im broke and they are pretty cheap. if i had a choice of turbo, I'd go with a PTE precision 5857 journal bearing. they are reasonably priced and have so much response and lots of top end along with a pretty nice warranty. Garrett's GT series turbo's are nice, but they are just too damn overpriced imo. I think precision is setting the bar for many turbo manufacturers these days.
96rbs14: i think as long as you DONT use a super huge laggy turbo and a stage 10 clutch, driveability shouldn't be an issue. I'm using a spec stage 2+ clutch and it is perfect for a daily driver (my s13 is my only car)

as240: have you run the 5857 on an rb25? what was your spool time
AS240
02-19-2012, 09:17 PM
I have not personally, but i have a friend that runs a 5857 on his rb20 and another that runs a pte6262 on his evo. for the size of the turbos, they spool much faster than
garrett's GT turbos in the same power range. I was going to buy one, then my first rb died :(

Is the hx35 to laggy? I can pick up a new one for 300....
AS240
02-19-2012, 10:05 PM
compared to what? yes it has more lag than a stock frame turbo and similar 28/30r turbos. it's comparable to a beefed up .50 trim. it spools a tad bit slower than a 35r but can probably handle more of a beating. they are larger in size which is the main drawback, but if you can fit one in your setup, they are quite nice. do a quick google search comparing them to BB GT turbos. you can see 15+psi of boost by 3800rpm on a proper setup.

yeah no problem dude. we all want the best bang for the buck, but some have more buck than others lol. in my case, im a broke college student working 2 jobs. i just like keeping my 240 a few car lengths ahead of the newest domestic v8 that's littering the streets these days haha
