View Full Version : S14 SR20DET sluggish?

Motor ran just fine before the swap. Now it's sluggish until full boost.
TPS is at .450 volts
BK7's are gaped at .28
Timing is advanced
And the wideband read high 13's low 14's at wot
Since the motor is equipped with vtc does that mean the timing needs to be set at stock?
CenTex240
Set timing to 15 degrees as in stock. The whole vct system is build on timing and camposition.
Complete stock block here?

That's what I was thinking. So adjust it back to stock and leave it be? The system will take care of the rest?
Yes stock everything....except for gt2871r but I'm at stock boost right now.
CenTex240
Yes, back at 15 and leave it.
Stock boost (0,7 bar) on a 2871 will be close to max out the maf and injectors I reckon. See if you can find someone with a consult and do a run to see what values you get before you blow something.

Cool, thanks for the useful information bud.

Rechecked the tps and it was off so I calibrated it again, set the timing back to 15...not by timing gun but by pulling the valve cover off and lining everything up and it still drive funny. Still hesitant until the turbo fully kicks in.
The plugs are gaped to .28 but I'm on stock boost...for now. Would this be the culprit? Like I said before, everything is stock except for a gt2871r.

May sound weird, but I had a similar problem until I replaced one of the blown fuses by the driver's side kick panel near the clutch pedal. I think it was the one labeled for Engine Control, or Engine something-or-other.
You first said you advanced the timing. This is done by rotating the CAS while in timing mode (ecu stays at 15* while the cas is turned to whatever *).
Now you say you changed the mechanical timing?
1. Get mechanical timing right @ FSM
2. Get car in timing mode
3. Use timinggun to set timing to 15* = 2nd mark from the right.
Good luck.

I'll check the fuses. Thanks.
Is this standard procedure for all sr models? Or just the 14 since it has vtc? I'll be sure to do this later in the afternoon. Which brings me to my next question. Do I need that special timing gun or will the standard one suffice?

Worked on it most of the afternoon yesterday. Never got around to timing it because I think I need a new tps. I rechecked the readout before I messed with the timing just to be sure and it was wacked out again. Reading like .265 so I adjusted it back to .45 and drove it, came back and it was at 6 or something. Even as I'm tightening down the screws I recheck just to be sure it's still at .45

Your timing is off...fix that shit first. You can re-stab it all day per FSM but it could still be off. Get a timing gun and check it.
Also, you said stock everything, stock fuel pump too? 7 psi on a damn GT2871 on stock everything will blow your fucking engine, stop pushing the damn car until you fix your issue and upgrade some shit (ie, pump, tune, injectors and MAF). 13.0-14.0 AFR on WOT IS BAAAAAAAD!!!

I agree...I'm not ragging out the car especially in the condition it's in right now...just want to get it running right and then I'll get injectors and a tune. The fuel pump is a walbro 255 and the fuel pressure gauge is reading 50's I think? At idle. I found another throttle body that I'll install next week. I'm seriously thinking the tps was shot. I've re calibrated the tps 4 times now and every time I start it up it reads something different then .45
But yes stock boost, stock everything just the usual fmic, exhaust, intake, exhaust manifold.

Update.
Got the Nissan consult working, set the timing to 15 btdc and still runs weird. In neutral the car only revs to 4k. Do the 14's come with a rev limiter from the factory?
Driving is fine but when I give it gas And it starts boosting it's fine as long as I'm only like half throttle. If I go full throttle the car literally just cuts out, like a fuel cut would act.
I bought a new throttle body with a tps sensor setup from the factory that way I could rule out that of The equation.
I thought it was the fuel pump so I replaced it And The old fpr with an aem and I still have the problem.

check your plugs too. i know this WOULDNT be your problem but they could be fouled out or messed up from running WAY to lean

would i did my s14sr swap i had to change the plugs, it would bog out at 5k. also check for leaks too .

I put bk7's in it But It's running stock boost. I would thought it might be a boost leak as well but I checked that with starter fluid and there was no change. This may sound weird but for some reason I thought it might be the intake so I took off the filter and it ran a little better. This leads me to believe that it's an intake leak somewhere.
The car ran perfect before I did the swap so I keep telling myself that it's something I already messed with but I'm still just at a loss.

Did you change any wiring? If so, I'd start there...

The only wiring that was done was the o2, maf, boost controller, Nissan consult, and auto timer.
I guess I'll check the mafs? Turn the ignition on and check voltage from there?

Update.
Used the DataScan tonight and turned up the A/F all the way....car ran like it should.
What would cause the ECU to be stingy? Would a bad O2 be the culprit?
