View Full Version : High Idle, tried everything

So my car idles at about 900 when its warm. I cleaned the IACV, the idle screw is all the way in, I cleaned the coolant temp sensor, I set the TPS like the guide says, I removed the IAV since people said it might cause an issue, I cleaned the MAF, pinched the air regulator at idle (nothing happened) and lastly I tried to set the timing to stock while removing the timing guides.
The other thing that worries me about the idle is that when I take my foot off the gas the idle goes to 900, jumps to 1100 and then back down to 900 when I come to a complete stop.

My only idea's are checking my actual timing with a timing light, vacuum leak? and maybe my spark plugs (can shitty/burnt/not in gap spec plugs cause a high idle?).

Let me know if you guys have any ideas?

I'd start with checking the actual timing and letting us know how that turns out. might be able to help a bit more if we knew what your timing turns out to be.

Max should be around 15 degrees BTDC
Get new plugs and use 91 octane.
warm up the engine
disconnect your fan and tps
set your timing and don't forget to hook the fan and tps back up

Let us know how that turns out.

So i checked the plugs and timing today. When I set the timing to 20 degrees, my rpm went up to 1000, however when i put it to about 5 degrees (the one after tdc) it was at the ideal 750.....
(positions are based on this picture)

weird thing is according to the "stock position" for a distributor in an s13 its
http://www.nicoclub.com/articles/images/timing-17.gif

Mine is positioned all the way to the right (ie the bolt is touching the right side of the slide), and it produces the same amount of power (or so it seems) and it didnt seem to heat up...

I have NO idea what to do now....

PM Me, possible to send me a pic of your distributor without the cap?

Yup, I can do that today after work.

Im thinking air regulator now..My idle should go down if I pinch it when the engine is warm right?

what about the throttle cable tension? or the throttle set screw...

Wouldnt doing the TPS set account for it?
