Quick and Simple:

My Chin's been itching like crazy lately and I need some serious help.. Can any one of you SR20 guru's please help validate which style Oil Pickup/strainer do ALL authentic S13 Blacktop SR20DET's have. Thanks!! :boink:

style2-- is s14-s15 oil pick up

This sounds more like a do I have a blacktop or redtop thread? Than an oil pick identification thread.

Someone at anytime could've replaced the pickup with whatever style, so its not a good way to tell. Early and late models will probably have different pickups. yada yada yada sex. Get the numbers from the castings.

Really? How so?

This is the one of the two 'major changes' that is always listed under differences between redtop and blacktop along with a different 02 sensor, and e5 ecu.

Is there something I'm missing?

It's been like 3 years since I upgraded to the Greddy oil pan, but I'm almost certain my redtop has pickup #2.

edit: now that I think about it, I think I bought an oil pickup from a blacktop and put it on my redtop... lol.

style 2 shares the same pik up from s13 black top and s14/s15
style 1 is redtop .. redtops are the ones that are smaller.

I can verify that style 2 is DEFINITELY in an S14sr, but that is all.

That style 1 motor is in some serious need for an oil change/clean

Do you have fins on the head? Thats another tell tale sign of a real black top.

Yes I have a 97 Blacktop with the Fins, etc.. I'm just curious about this oil pickup thing because I will be changing out my oil pan to a Tomei unit, and would like to know if I need to order that 'later' style of oil pickup to change it out while i'm down there. I seriously do not want to order something that I won't need unless you guys are 100% certain that S13 Blacktops do not have that 'later' style of oil pickup.

From all the sources I seem to find, the conclusion is that the S13 Blacktop does have this 'newer' style pickup. Then again, there are some people who seem to disagree or not know.. But I'll just go with the Majority Rules, ideology. :)


Om1kron, would you please explain your reasoning behind your believe that S13 Blacktop SR's from the factory didn't come with the later 'style' of oil pickup? Weren't they were being produced during the same time S14 SR's were.. Would make sense that Nissan would use the same part instead of stocking two different styled oil pickups..

The s13 black top has an early model (95-96) and late model (97-98). Maybe they changed the pickup on the later models?
