View Full Version : Possible Tuned, But Unmarked ECU?

I've been having what seems like a misfire issue with this new setup (still hasn't been driven, just started/reved). Runs extremely rich, black smoke like crazy... Connect the MAF and the idle drops and stumbles to keep itself running. Won't rev past like 3200rpm's. I'm thinking I must have something wired wrong, or a sensor not adjusted correctly. CAS & TPS are set correctly, injectors are doing just as they should, spark to all cylinders.
Well just for shits & giggles I decided to throw a N62 MAF on the car and everything is fixed! So it's looking like I have some sort of tune on my stock WC ecu...How would I go about finding out what it's tuned for, or better yet how do I wipe it clean?

Open the ECU and see what you are dealing with first hardware wise.

I did and saw nothing out of the ordinary.
Maybe you can tell me something?

have you tried driving it with the n62 maf?

I could be wrong but I have never seen a tuned SR ECU without a daughter board.

Not yet. I got a few other things to workout on the rest of the car before I drive it.

I would say try to put non-tune WC ECU from someone around you (if possible) otherwise
I dont think there is anyway to find out what mod your ECU is tuned for...
Or you could send your ECU to RS enthalpy or JWT to re-flesh it..

Nobody around here runs a S14 SR20det that I know of. I have e-manage set aside, but I'm still just curious as to what this one is setup for. Just for when I go to resell it, or keep it as a spare.

It would be very difficult to sell it without knowing what is tuned for... why not get re-flesh it? shouldn't cost much... and I am sure there are many people on Zilvia from SC with WC ECU..

Have someone dump the bin, then send it to me or anyone that deals with tuned ecu's we can tell if it is tuned or not. From the modified k value i can tell you roughly the injectors and mafs

I agree, as I've yet to see one too.

It's very rare. I've only seen one and it was more of a boost up type of tune. stock maf, limiters removed more aggressive timing no boost cut that type of thing. No daughterboard.
And it was for an s13.

Sure it wasn't from a different car? I am unsure how that is even possible on stock ECU cars...no doubting just curious

I tried swapping to the black WC ecu and it wouldn't even prime my injectors, much less start the car. So I'm guessing it's the correct ECU.

Maybe your engine is not Zenki S14 SR... who knows..
how does your valve cover bolt look like ? is it bolt type? or stud and nut type?

Stud & nut type. The red WC ecu is the zenki ecu and the black WC ecu is the kouki ecu. I've tried both, the black WC ecu won't even prime my fuel pump.

Highly doubt you have a tuned ECU. First of all certain maf will run as if all all is good even if it wasnt designated for the same ECU. I've seen many times S13 SR Guys rocking KA24E SOHC MAFS and does seem to idle and run fine with the stock ECU. Of course its not ideal but I could only convince them that its not a good idea. S14 SR are tricky since they're several versions. I would start by verifying which harness you have and if its pinned to run with the ECU your using and MAF to match the ECU. My previous setup I had a Kouki S14 SR and Harness and had to depin the harness to work to a S14 Zenki Red WC ECU which is the only model I can run Nistune board. The MAF did not matter for me since I was changing it out anyways. I actually drove my SR with Nistune board running stock base map with 550cc and N62 maf already installed for a week with no issues as they seem to balance out each other. After it was tuned then all was good.
RED WC is from a 95-96 S14 Silvia Zenki
BLACK WC is from a 96-97 S14 Silvia Chuki (transition, different MAF plug)
NA is from a 97-98 s14 Silvia Kouki 5 speed (http://zilvia.net/f/#)

I'm familiar with running SOHC MAF's on the S13 SR's but that isn't the case with the S14's. I've heard you can run them, but it just won't be right. As far as my harness goes it's a brand new Wiring Specialties harness for a zenki, matching to my red wc ecu (zenki) and to the MAF that's listed on the ecu. The only MAF I ever could plug into this car without it dying is the Z32 MAF.
