With it in the car I can't find any casting numbers, only a flat machined pad by the bellhousing stamped with SR20 059627W. Which I assume is a partial VIN off the car it came from. Can anyone help with the I.D? Trying to determine if this is a SR20DE or DET....

Well this one is turbo'd... but it has a 52F head. The lines are all there but I'm not sure if it was modified that way or not. The oil drain port in the bottom of the block looks a little questionable.

it will have both coolant and oil passages on the block as well as the return down low.

Look on the underside of the motor, assuming it's completely disassembled. If it has the oil squirters or the holes for them, it's a turbo block, if not, it's NA. Everything else is identical (except for the holes for the turbo lines.)

Nope it's in the car and assembled right now. All the oil and coolant lines for the turbo are hooked up and go to the block, but like I said someone could have drilled and tapped those, it's not too hard.

So there's a shortblock for sale locally, I can obviously tell whether it's a DET or not, but how do I tell if it's a FWD block or a RWD block? And does it even matter?

FWD block will not work and looks totally different from the RWD block

Can you elaborate...?

Bellhousing bolts are completely different.

Motor mounts and bolt locations for the mounts are different.

Not seeing much difference?

And sorry for being new to SR20's...

See the hole for the starter? Thats a FWD SR, similar to the KA, starter bolts to the block. There isnt a hole like that on a RWD SR. The starter bolts directly to the transmission bellhousing.

Ah, ok easy enough.
