Got my head back from machine shop and these were attached to it in a baggie. I didn't see them when I picked it up and they didn't mention anything. Can anybody identify them?

They are dowel pins on the block. That will help you when your about to re-install the head.

are these necessary to replace when rebuilding the engine or are they just for alignment with the head?

thanks

alignment of the head, but I would still install them anyways. They do sit in pretty tight and would help stable the head, even if just a little.

I would NOT discard those bits. They make sure the head is correctly aligned with the block/cylinders. They prevent any shifting of the head during install

Yesterday I noticed those weren't installed after rebuilding my head and tore the engine back down to install them. If I have this correct they should be in the first and last holes for the head studs. When I tried reinstalling them in this position the studs would not feed through. What am I doing wrong?

TIA,
-albert

they should have their own holes, not the stud holes

the only spot I could figure to install them was where they are installed in this photo

those holes are stud holes if im not mistaken, it's not often ARP throws freebies in their hardware kits.

thats where they go. the studs should go in with no interference.

mine refuse to go in with those in place. I've built it and even cycled the engine without them then tore it back down to try and install them and they won't fit. Gonna have to skip them.
