hello everyone need a little bit of help. i got a 97 240 with a blacktop s14 sr20det engine. been driving for about 2 years without any problems. but i have noticed a small oil leak around the front cover of the engine. to me it just looks like taking the pulley off, and bolts and it should come off. ive heard people saying you have to take the head off tho... and does anyone know of a gasket that goes there or just put it back on with silicone? any advice? thanks

im pretty sure its just rtv, i took mine off when i had the head on but im think i had the upper oil pan off. you also have to go get a tool that allows you to pull the pulley off, i had to go get one but it was only like 30 bucks

You'll basically be disassembling the motor. Head needs to come off or you will most likely screw up the head gasket when putting it back on. Upper oil pan needs to be removed because the oil pump itself extends about 1/4 inch down from the bottom edge of the front cover, just enough to make slipping it onto the crank itself a pain in the ass. You could remove the upper oil pan with motor in the car, but you'll have to raise the motor a good bit to get all to bolts off. If you do what i did the first time around and just loosen the upper oil pan and pry it off just enough to slip the front cover on, you'll have a new oil leak. Have fun, I know I didn't

I have an unrelated problem but I am curious if there is enough room to get the upper oil pan all the way off with the engine still in the car. Obviously it would have to be unbolted from the car and lifted up but if I were to do that, would I be able to get the pan totally off?

You can get the upper pan off if you lift the motor out of it's cradle. Be sure to remove the oil strainer before trying to pull it off.
