Can s13 or RB20 power steering pumps run off regular fluid, or do they only need to run on transmission fluid (from what I've heard in the past)...??

either works, ATF is my personal choice

Edit due to Weyerbacher Merry Monks:

I use generic parts store ATF in mine. Nothing fancy.

What does the fsm call for as far as atf, dex/merc, atf+4.. ? Iv heard stories about leaky rack and pinions from guys using regular ps fluid my guess is the viscosity of the fluids being way different

I read on another Nissan forum that ATF is what i functions on, because of the high pressure.. I'll try ATF..

By "either", do you mean that you can use regular ole PS fluid as well as ATF? If so, that is incorrect. Power steering fluid will work your pump to death.

For our cars, power steering fluid is the devil. Use ATF, just like Nissan says to use.

And leak past the seals too. They are different viscosity's.

For any fluid questions, be sure to check the MA section of your FSM too (owners manual may even have it, I've not ever looked at mine)

I was a few beers when I wrote that haha.

I mean to say I use regular parts store ATF generic stuff, no need for the fancy stuff.

Damn you Weyerbacher, Damn you.
