So I have my s13 sr on a stand and when I spun it upside down to get to the oil pan bolts a spring fell out of the head through the timing chain cover and I have no idea where it came from. Any ideas

A picture would def help more than a description of a "spring"

Oil pressure relief piston plunger/"spring"? Check the botom of front timing cover for a missing large retaining nut.

so i checked on the timing cover but what im guessing is the oil pressure relief valve is still intact. im guessing its where that bolt is on the right side of the cover. if thats it and its all good then where did this thing come from? the spring that fell out is next to the cover

If that Oil pump is functioning properly then i wouldnt worry about it.
Ive torn many SR's apart and never seen a spring like that.

well the spring fell out when i took the timing cover off when tearing apart my motor. it hasnt been started yet since. i know theres a spring inside that chamber on the right side of the pump with the big bolt to hold it in, for something like the oil pressure. but that bolt never came out.. so im pretty lost haha

Whats the history on the motor? was it recently purchased and you were freshening it up? Theres a chance that it was dropped in there by accident. You can also check the fsm for a spring that fits the description.

Hmm, could that be the spring on the chain tensioner???

no it was running fine until i had to pull it out due to the bad compression. i looked in the fsm in the oil pump section and the only spring anywhere near it is from the oil pressure relief valve but its still in there. idk how it couldve just been chillen in there without it getting chewed up or breaking something but right now that seems like the answer haha

the chain tensioner doesnt have a spring though, does it?

just about to say that..it looks to me like the spring that goes inside the tensioner, problem with that is that the shaft also has to be in your oil pan somewhere

ohhh i get what you guys are saying. its actually in the body of the tensioner. no the tensioner is in tact i just looked at it like 30 sec ago

It's possible that the tensioner was bad and blew apart inside your engine causing bad compression numbers among any other issues you've been having.
I've had one come apart on me (not inside my engine) and if I remember correctly that spring looks like the one.

how long have you had the engine for? maybe the previous owner's chain tensioner broke and yeah..and long story short he got lazy..just a possibility

Murffy, that sounds like a pretty good possibility. The tensioner that was in the motor was perfectly fine, and now Im using a brand new one
