hey wassup guys, there this ticking noise coming from the head by where the exhaust manifold is, idk if its the lifters or an exhaust leak, im missing 4 bolts on the exhaust manifold idk if that can cause an exhaust leak (im kinda a noob) another thing, i put some oil stabilizer in the motor and the ticking was gone, well it was still there but quieter, if anyone can come by and help me out ill spot you like 20 bux, thanx in advance... i live in the antelope valley area (661)

if your oil level is full try revving it to 3k for like 1 min see if it helps

ooh yeah thats not lifters....thats something bad

did you drive your car really hard or starve it of oil before this happened?

burnouts racing?

um...yeah i cant give much more advice, sounds like the motor might be going out, could be the valves or inside the block? im not pro. i would take it to a mechanic

i did a complete tune up after i purchased it, and no i never abused it, the only reason y i got it was cuz i did a compression test and all of the cylinders came out good..

well i dont know what to tell you, how long ago did you buy the car?

and yes the 4 missing bolts will contribute to the car sounding like shit.
but if there are 4 missing i would be more concerned that everything else might be half assed on the car... if thats how you bought it

ill say it been like 3 or 4 months since i got it, and when i got it the car sounded smooth i dont know why all of a sudden it just started happening, im taking it to a shop tomorrow to see whats going on with it, i hope it is just an exhaust leak and nothing really bad

thanx for the help tho man

you should check the code for the check engine light that came up to get some more insight.

Totally sounds like an exhaust leak I had.

Depending on the material the gasket is made of, the exhaust pressure could've blown a small piece of the gasket off since it wasn't being held tightly between the head and the manifold.

you can smell fumes from your exhaust manifold if anything? idkkk but good luck!

does it go away after its been running for awhile? i have a leak in my exhaust mani too, but its no where near as bad as that.
its most likely an exhaust leak tho if u have 4 bolts missing haha

they're there for a reason ;)

best way to tell is by using a smoke machine tho. if u know anyone with one, or a shop or something (maybe ur local school with an auto department) id recommend that.

however if u cant do that, take a rubber hose, and use it like a stethoscope. put one side up to the exhaust mani and the other side up to ur ear. move it around and u should be able to find a leak using that method as well.

all in all, get some new bolts for it lol

its most likely an exhaust leak, and the gasket is probably shot...

and make sure you do fix the engine light

Spray some PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench on it and try to work it loose.

Be careful not to round off the bolt.

..if you're missing 4 out of 8 bolts from your exhaust manifold.. i'm sure theres a leak...
sounds like a lawnmower = exhaust leak

-edit-

Deleted a somewhat condescending approach to explain why missing bolts can cause the leak.

It looks Hartig already nailed it on the head.

well if you only need 4, and that will solve the problem with quality brand new never used bolts.

sometimes its worth coughing up 12 bucks...

ive spend 50 bucks on stuff a few times and got nothing out of it.

i spent 200 on something and got screwed

i spent 400 and ..... so on and so on.

12 bucks is like a penny to me now adays.... not because im rich, because when it comes to my car and doing it right. you always end up spending more in the long run if you cheap out on certain things.

but in this case it would just be time you would be losing, and if you have time then keep searching for bolts that are cheap

$2.99 x 4pc = $13.12 which is $6.88 less than what your going to pay for someone to look at your car and tell you your missing 4 bolts.

I agree, I'd say get new ones just because its will be easy to get the exact ones your looking for and you know they wont have damaged threads or rounded off heads, plus they will be shiny! the only time I buy used is things like wheels, brackets, headlights, body panels, Im not rich either I work very hard to play with my toys but i dont buy "used bolts"? and dont get why anyone else would want to, you can even get bolts at auto zone 4 packs for like $2.99 but I would only get ones that are the proper grade.
