View Full Version : S14 1JZ Build
Hello everyone. Decided to make a thread highlighting the progression of my S-Chassis during my winter build.
Anyways, my name is Alex. I'm from St. Louis, Missouri. I'm a college student and focus my time and energy to work, bills, cars, and school work.
On to the car!
These are the previous outlines of the car before late last year.

This was my 2nd SR. I sought reliability after the 1st one blew up.
This winter, I decided to take on a project I've really been intrigued on doing for quite some time. Originally, I was going to pick up a MX83 Cressida and swap a 1JZ into there. However, I realized it would be much more neat in the S14.
Reasons for choosing this power plant?
- Forged Bottom End
- Inline 6
- R154
Browsing supraforums, I always get a kick out of the noobie threads titled: "How Much Boost is Safe" etc. etc. Everyone always responds, "whatever the fuck you want" xD. Lastly, I can keep the engine in relatively stock form and attain my power goals.

I've done hours and hours of research on this swap/motor/transmission. I refuse to cut any corners. Sure, it's somewhat ambitious, but it's been a great challenge.
Just like an RB swap: mounts, wiring, driveshaft. Obviously the RB is much more documented into a S-Chassis, but this swap is becoming more and more common.
Factory Redline is 7,500 RPM. I'll rev the motor to 8,000 RPM with the cams.

this is baddass  i gotta save up $$$$
Thanks for the compliments^^.
Taking some suggestions...
I'm trying to sort out some radiator hoses. The upper water neck will have the two nipples blocked off/welded shut; also the neck will feed straight into the upper radiator hose, instead of the 90.
I'm thinking a lower KA hose will work, and even the upper. Just wanted to see what everyone thought first before I purchased something xD.
And.
The throttle cable. Anyone know where to go/look for a custom cable?
1: Buy a new custom cable that fits my dimensions.
2: Any way to mesh the Toyota and Nissan one together?

Shot of the downpipe underneath; will have to be modified for better clearance.
http://i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq331/spartanhockey409/photo24-1.jpg
Only 1 clutch inspection cover came with my transmission. Toyota wanted $90 a side for them, so I found some carbon fiber ones on Ebay. They're pretty lame but will do the trick.
http://i461.photobucket.com/albums/qq331/spartanhockey409/photo25-1.jpg
And a last shot of the clearance between the radiator and engine. Had I used a single core radiator, puller fans could have been used.
Still waiting, almost a month later, my Baller Bolts rear suspension bolts. Hopefully this week, I'll get the car trailered to have intercooler mounted and piping fabbed up.
Also need to wire up my AEM Map sensor, wideband, and boost solenoid. Lots of progress, just the small things from here.

The actual engine mounts (piece of medal from the block that adapts to the motor mounts) are manufactured from Zerolift. They are built to adapt a 1JZ Engine, S-Chassis Motor Mounts, and the OEM S-Chassis Crossmember.
The engine mounts cost about $300-350, I really can't recall, then the Avid S-Chassis mounts were around $200.
Oh and today all my oil cooler stuff showed up. Just waiting on a filter stud from Toyota!

3" Downpipe to a oval pipe, then crosses behind the transmission mount and straight out the back with 3.5"
As of last week, the car runs. Terribly. Had to use the factory ECU, which allowed for the engine to start. However, with the current injector size, it idles like a cammed mustang xD.
Since the AEM EMS is for a 2JZ, I need to re-wire the fuel injectors. 2J's use a Sequential firing fuel injection system while the 1J's use a Batch firing system. I'm in the process of getting this sorted out.
Tune date set for June 20th. Hope I make it; thanks for all the comments, I'll be sure to keep everyone updated with progress. More pictures and videos to come.

I have another question. Does the r154 tranny need adapter for the knob to go into factory location and is there way to up make the A/c work? Will walbru 255 pump by good for this swap or do i need to get a custom fuel system going.

You need a shifter extension and extended housing for it to be positioned in the factory location. You will need custom adapter lines to run from the a/c compressor. A walbro 255lph may not supply enough fuel depending on how much power you plan to make.
Nice build and progress, by the way OP.

Running! Like crap. Needs a tune really bad.
Also need to figure out the issue of the timing belt creeping forward on the cam gears. I've already pulley everything apart and gotten tighter tension on the belt, but it still crept forward.
Any ideas? When I did all the maintenance on the engine, I replaced everything except the tensioner. I was able to reset the tensioner just fine and didn't think anything of it.

Not true. If you get a 1J from a soarer, they have a shifter extension on the transmission from the factory. Save yourself like $300 extra.
Build looking sick! Turbo is close to my power goals too. I want to run a 57 trim t4 kit from driftmotion.

The engine should run sequential no problem.. There really is no difference in the sensors from the 1jz to the the 2jz.. you have one cam sync.. i always use the back plug on the head for cam sync.. and the trigger is 12 teeth... same exact thing for 2jz... so that isn't your problem.. Trig is 12 teeth but it spins double the speed of the cam so It should be set up as 24 teeth in the ecu. For the timing belt, make sure that the word toyota is facing you not upside down, when you stand in front of the motor..
I used to have a 1jz s14.. you are going to have a lot of fun with your car when you get it running. I made 458 at 21psi.. but it was really rich. I tuned the car with my friend without a wide band on the dyno, stupid wide band decided to take a crap that day. I drove the car like that daily. Sold it like 2yrs + ago and I found out that the same motor is still running strong.
I didn't wire a AEM in that car I was using a EMS Stinger ecu, it only runs on batch fire anyways, but I have wired a 1jz sequential before with a EMS 8860. I have made a few full harness's for 1jz and 2jz..
Hope some of this info helps.. Wish I could go over and help you out lol.

What are your power goals? Are you on 93 or e85? -6 is pretty small line. Also that looks like a CB power steering line kit, Did everything fit well and have good maneuverability for routing? Also what size line did you use for your oil cooler?
Looks like fun, I have a 1jz and all the swap parts lined up; wife just said I am not allowed to do it til we get a new house :-(

I wanted 450 horsepower. The current setup is 93 octane, and the -6 Line is sufficient for my setup.
CB power steering kit worked just fine. The lines are plenty long, I just tucked the high pressure line along the frame rail to the rack.
Oil Cooler is -10 sizing. Still have not installed it yet, as I need to find the best mounting point, and make brackets.

Good deal, I plan on going for 600whp in mine on e85; I have a spare 2j block for when it pops to throw in. Also the ps kit is good to know that there is ample line, I was thinking about using their reservoir/fittings and building my own lines.
What are you going to use your car for? I plan to on highboost mainly cruise and be a highway monster and on low boost do some road courses. I am going to sell my Autronic when I switch to the JZ setup and get a vipec so I may do boost regulated gearing by then though.

My buddy just told me today that you could just heat up the stock sway bar since it's solid and bend it flat like the sikky sway bar and have plenty of clearance. Give it a shot flicktitty! he's gonna send me picks of this later on today. I can shoot them your way if you're interested in checking it out.

I know people are running the sikky bar but I'd like to see clearance with a lowered car before paying for one. or doing something custom. I don't know if it's also the fact i'm still on 15's that fucks me over too.

Here's a pretty lame picture of how it sits now. I can get better pictures of the sway bar and it's clearance. I was pretty impressed with the quality and fitment of the Sikky sway bar. I need to adjust it a tad bit, however, no complaints yet.

two quick question though when you get a minute..
1 - what intercooler is that? i've think i've only seen ones that bend in like that on skylines.?.
2 - i'm also having front sway bar issues with my 2jz and was wondering why you opted for the sikky bar over the cheaper solution of using spacers? i've never seen the spacers mounted before so i am guessing that they take away from the overall rigidity of the sway bar.

I purchased the intercooler from someone off Zilvia. I was told it's an Apex'i core; it's measurements are 28x9.5x4.75.
I looked into the spacers for a while, but didn't give them much thought after I found the Sikky bar. Sure, the price is a bit deterring, however, it's well worth it with the quality of parts included.

Ahh that was so long ago it seems.
Cannot thank you enough for all the help on the car sir!
So what were your impressions of the car? It looked like it was screamin out there!
The car was incredible. Considering, I had roughly 100 street miles on it, and a brand new alignment/suspension arms/500 horsepower, I was thoroughly impressed with the car. I felt super confident heading into the event and fully accepted any engine issue that would come my way.
From the 1st two runs, which one of the videos posted above shows, I really had to just get used to the gearing difference. Once, I figured that I should enter in the middle of 4th gear at well, over 100, I was able to complete some solid runs.
Also, I surprised myself on how quickly I adjusted to all the added power and a proper alignment. My last event prior was August 2010, so it had been a while.
Starting to prep the car for Formula D Pro/Am in Las Vegas on August 26/27th. I'll be sure to keep everyone interested updated on here. Hopefully going through the oil cooler install, battery cut-off, tow hooks, new seat, and general safety/tech stuff.

Bit of an update for everyone.
Went down to Las Vegas for Formula D Round 6/Pro AM. Had a great time even thought the heat was almost un bearable.
Made friends with the wall though on my qualifying run. Was a real similar wreck to Kyle Mohan's in his RX8.
Entered, the top of 3rd gear. Rear bumper taped the wall on entry. Was going to send the front end in, so I did my best to rotate the car around. Pretty much slid backwards into the tire wall at around 40mph I'd imagine.
It's not too bad at all. Just cosmetic damage and the need for an alignment.

i would say you could do 400 reliable in an SR...
More in an RB25/26
seems like a fairly large turbo to drift with... why not use a smaller turbo like a 30R or something?

My hands.
I'm not even kidding. That sheet metal is so thin, I literally pulled it out. To get the tail-light aligned better, however, I did attach a come-along to my Excursion and pulled more xD.

Building a SR was my other option. I looked into VE heads, etc etc. My previous S14 SR ran AWESOME. 11lbs of boost, a bunch of cooling mods, and it was very reliable. So, I wanted more power...JZ offered such in relatively stock form.
I'll lay this out for you based on my logic as to why I chose the JZ over the other Nissan engines.
JZ Engine:
- OEM Forged bottom End
- R154 <- this is a huge one. Anyone who has modified an SR past 400 horsepower is most likely familiar or will be familiar with a failed transmission. Sure, there are the Z32/Z33 options, if that's your fancy.
- Non-Interference engine
I mean you can increase valve clearances to almost 9.5mm before it becomes interference.
Cons:
- Parts are somewhat expensive. I spent a lot of my budget of swapping the fuel lines to the driver side as well as AEM EMS stuff. However, had I wanted more power out of say, an RB, fuel system modifications and ECU modifications would have been necessary.
Now, on a much more rudimentary level let's compare the swaps. In this case the RB to JZ.
Mounts: both require the use of aftermarket mounts and cost very similar
Wiring: both require the re-wiring of the M63 plug for the S-Chassis. Whether wiring is your fancy and you re-pin everything yourself or pay for a new harness, the price/time constraint is relatively similar.
Driveshaft: You will need a custom driveshaft for both swaps.
Import Cost: Each motor costs NEARLY the same. Paid about $2,500 for mine with engine/trans/mounts/freight to my door.
Where the difference lies deals with custom fabrication work. JZ dumps exhaust on the opposite side. So, yes, I had to have a custom exhaust made. In regards to intercooler piping, I once again went the custom route adding to the expense. Each aspect could have been simplified to cut costs or made custom for each application (JZ or RB).
To me, the costs seemed relatively similar. Except with the JZ, I attained all the 'Pros' as aforementioned.
Lastly, I'm sure some people are against such because they are Nissan purists, what have you.

S13 Differential.
So, 4.08? That sounds about right.
Looking for some input/suggestions.
Went to an event in late October out in Utah, where I go to school. Motor ran great for about 8 runs, then during a tandem run, the engine just shut off all together. I'd imagine the AEM had something to do with this.
I pull into the pits and re start the engine to idle speed. There is a slight ticking noise coming from the back of the engine. I assume this is valvetrain related at this point. There is proper oil level, no leaks, and not a significant knocking noise.
A few weeks ago, I start with a few diagnosis.
(1) engine started cold, no exhaust leaks.
(2) individually unplug each injector.
Thought being, saying cylinder 1 is unplugged, therefore it is not firing. However the valves above the cylinder as still functioning mechanically from the other 5 cylinders. Should the ticking noise volume stay the same, one can assume there is not rod bearing clearance issues on that cylinder. Should the ticking noise quiet in volume, that cylinder can be seen as the culprit.
- I notice almost no change in volume
(3) remove valve covers, no wear on the cams, oil pump has not failed
From this point, I assume the cams need to be re-shimmed, I will not assume so until I remove the oil pan and inspect.
Last evening, I finally pull the oil pan.

All of the bad news in one picture...
Best to say, I caught an EARLY rod bearing failure. Sure, it sucks, but there's nothing I can do about it now.
Looking for some input here.
Since I caught this early.
(1) Rebuild the 1JZ
I'd imagine I can get away with a crank polish/balance, block hone, and new bearings.
This seems the most economical. However, while in the engine I'd upgrade a few parts as well, so that would factor into the price.
- ARP Main/Rod/Head Studs
- OEM Toyota Headgasket
- OEM Toyota Oil Pump
At a minimum, depending on wear, I'd look into replacing the pistons/rings as well.
(2) 2JZ Bottom End, 1.5JZ
- Used, I can buy a 2JZGTE Longblock.
- Replace headgasket/head studs, mount my 1JZ head to this.
- Cost: $1,800 for longblock
- New Short block: $2,300
Keep in mind I can re-cooperate some funds selling the 2J Turbochargers/Intake manifold/Head.
Does anyone on here have any experience with a 1.5JZ engine? Seems like the quickest way to have the car running again. Displacement will be bumped to 3 liters.

I vote 1.5JZ if you are going to play around with the bottom end.
(And can swing it).
Cool Set-up, man.

Why not a 2JZGE block, with either a set of used GTE rods and pistons, or aftermarket set? Then TT headgasket and ARP stuff if you wish.
I vote 1.5jz as well.
sucks you got rod knock man, I did the same thing to my SR on the first run in Kansas a few weeks ago so i know how you feel... :bash:

I'd also put my money towards a 2jzge block. They're cheap as hell, are also forged, and the only real difference between the turbo motor is oil squirters and piston design. You can find these all day for about $300-$400!

Exactly!
I mean, it was a used engine and who knows what it went through prior to my use.
I have decided on a 2JZGTE Longblock purchase. I will then transfer all of the front assembly parts that can be transferred.
- OEM Toyota HeadGasket
- ARP Head Studs
- New Intake/Exhaust Valve Seals
- OEM Toyota Oil Pump
- HKS DLI Ignition System
- Fuel Surge Tank
- 100 Octane Tune
I will either make a new thread or update this one; take everyone through a 1.5JZ conversion for future reference and ideas.
Engine out over Christmas Break.
Updates soon!

I am just finishing building a 1.5jz for my S14. I used an all stock 2jzge block.
I had the block rehoned, with all new clevite bearings.
Im running an all stock 1j head, ARP headstuds, oem 1j head gasket and all the other necessary parts to put the two together.
My engine isnt actually in the car running yet, it will be very soon.
But Ive been talking to the guy who built this 1.5 for alot of info.

Great thread, very informative. I got a stock kouki recently and have been debating replacing the KA with a 1JZ. Seems like quite a bit of work although im sure the end result makes it all worth it.

What kinda spring rates are you running to compensate for the extra weight?

Good choice on the 2j block if my block shits the bed with my new turbo set up i will be doing the same.
Shouldnt have a problem running the stock internals with the 2j there capable if handleing 600 hp, ive heard of some running 800 but I could only guess for how long and depends on the abuse...
Cant wait to see pics!!
I know it's been almost a year for this blog but are there any updates on your build?

Ive heard of Japanese tuners building 1.5J's on purpose cause the 1j head flows better.
