when i pulled the valve cover off there was a plaster spacer type thing. it was like a strand of rings that surrounded the spark plug holes.... well it cracked when i removed it.

what is this thing called and where can i buy it?

Yeah get a new valve gasket from the auto parts they come included and its only cost like 30 bucks.
