View Full Version : Is it normal for my exhoust manifold to glow RED!!

i just changed my turbo froma t3t4 to a t28. My exhoust manifold is stainless steel and NOT CAST Iron. Some people were telling me that it might be my timing. and some say its normal. Can anyone just clarify it for me...

After a hard pull it may be a little red, but as your friends said, check your timing for sure.

Yeah after a good spirited drive, mine glows red, but it just depends on your situation. If you aren't driving her hard before parking it, I would say to check your timing... could be detonating.

i upgraded to an 18g my bad for the confusion.
I havent ad the chance to check my timing but all you guys idea i will check. what i should add as well is that its not when im driving the car that the mani glows red its when its ideling.. about 5 minutes into the car being turned on the manifold starts glowing red..

I have 255 walboro fuel pump
z32 fuel filter stock injectors stock top end. my bottom end... i have wiseco pistons eagle rods and bearings brand new oil pump. and thats it. i havent tuned anything everything is still stock tune

Are the pistons stock compression? And what FPR are you running for your 255? Stock one will run it, just trying to confirm that the FPR is regulating correctly... does the car run well or stall or stutter? If it runs well, you can count out your fuel, and focus more on timing. Sounds to me like you're lean, but not due to insufficient fuel... just insufficient fuel timing.

no it doesnt sputter or stall out at all. it runs just fine when i turn it on. what it does do though. as soon as i give it has and the rpm come down it sounds like it goes to low of rmp and then it comes back up and starts ideling normal

So you upgraded to an 18g without changing the tune or injectors? Probably running out of fuel.

im not staling out or anything though. the car runs just fine when its ideling. but as soon as 2 or 3 minutes go by the mani starts glowing hot red.

PS: YOu should really look into your 'vitals' sort to speak with that 18g on there...you not being retuned for larger injectors/maf is not good either.

yeah just chilling at idle it starts doing it. i will check all that for sure.

LOL if your manifold starts turning red when it's IDLING you need to turn that fucking motor off and find someone to tune it, or put the baby turbo your car is set up for back on before you buy a replacement motor.

just got back from the shop and big surprise my timing is perfectly fine. the car still starts fine no sputering no nada!! the dame mani still glows red. im starting to think that it might just be the way that exhaust mani is..

Get a tune. You are running way to lean.. You cant just slap a bigger turbo with not upgrading your injectors or even getting a tune.
You can hurt your motor by running it like that. Shit get a wideband and see how lean you are.

If his manifold is glowing red at idle, the turbo has nothing to do with it.

If he upgraded the turbo to a 18g iirc they come from godspeed set at 14lbs. So he has changes his air - fuel ratio and now is runing it lean.
Or i could be totaly dumb rite now because im shit ass tired.

so this is my complete thing.... i had a t25 set at 14 lbs with all stock internals..then i got my bottom end done. wiseco forged pistons eagle rods and bearings new oil pump new oil pan...then when i went to the shop i took my turbo off so i could wrap it and there was a fire next to the shop so i put everything under the hood and some asshole decided to jack my shit so i rounded up what ever parts i could for my T3T4. i put all that stuff on and went on my way.. no tune no nothing.. and still the car ran fine...now that took the T3T4 off and replaced the exhaust manifold with a stainless steel one and the 18g turbo the car still runs fine but the mani glows bright ass read after just a few minuts of ideling...

So have you checked the timing yet. It can only be a timing or lean fuel problem

Sorry for the big ass delay in getting back at yall but I was trying qbsuletly everything people would grow my way. And still....nothing. I'm starting to thing the exhaust mani is just to thin or just made like that. I had at 2 different shops take a look at It and said that my timing was perfectly fine and so was ky air feo ratio. I'm stumped.....

I wrapped it with some exhaust wrap. And its smoking like a mudah. Could it be that the mami is just to thin or probably its some cheap ass material?

IDK man..I had a T25 on my KA once, with a pretty thin ebay manifold. Car wasn't tuned and was running pretty lean. My manifold was never red.

how long have you had the mani for? sometimes if there fairly new they will turn red and its just burning off everything

I really thank all you guys for all the ideas they all helped and some well one was really off the wall lol but thanks......i started driving my car around with the mani wrapped in the exhaust wrap. and its fine the only problem i have now is when i down shift it sounds like my exhaust chokes on it self.

check your cat prolly getting clogged....(if u have one) i had this problem on my old ranger my header was glowing red then 2 weeks later my cat got clogged and the truck had no power then i made a test pipe and worked fine
.... just a suggestion not sure 100% but its a idea jus from experience

I have seen this happen several times due to one of the following or a combination of them...
-having an AFC installed on the car
-having a shitty jdm tuned rom from a junk yard or front clip on the car
-having shitty or improperly adjusted CAS
-having car that has never ever had the CAS and base timing even checked
-having car with improperly gapped plugs and / or bad fuel
-having bad Fuel Air Mixture
-having bad Fuel Air Mixture
-having bad Fuel Air Mixture
-If you're running in closed loop, the 02 is dead
-if you're running in open loop, your ECU is dead or shit or wrong one
-Wrong MAF
-Right MAF but wrong ECU to run it
-Bad MAF
all of these can contribute to shithead read glow. It should only glow after like a 10 minute freeway run, not after a few pulls down the street,
My own personal first SR car, back in 2002 - 2003 would glow like that sometimes after a few hard pulls...it was a shit AFC with correct settings but the shit AFC ruins the signals on several of the sensors and adds resistance to the MAF wiring circuit, also the shit JDM ecu that I had that was tuned for god knows what but looked cool so I could say "MINES YO" super MINES lol was killing the motor....I blew like 3 sr's back then, cracked manifolds all the time and finally figured shit out bought a standalone, a brand new wiring harness and never looked back, started hitting 10-11 sec 1/4 miles and the car actually ran properly.....
hopefully this spurs some thoughts
