View Full Version : Sr20det engine rebuild. Please help

Ok so I bought a 240 the other day and the motor blew 2 days later. Did a compression test: (number's were 95, 0, 95, 95) The second piston was cracked. i dont have the money to pay for the rebuild parts and labor, so im going to attempt to do the rebuild myself. Ive never done a rebuild or motor swap so im going to need all the help I can get. I have a garage and ALL tools needed for everything. Im looking for instructions and tips. I know this sounds kind of stupid but im completely out of options right now. All help would be much appriciated. thanks everyone.

Get a friend who has experience to help, it will be a lot less boring, and you might learn a few more things as opposed to reading a book. Just my opinion.

its probably cheaper and easier to just source another long block that is in good shape. That's what I did in the past a few times actually.
What you really need to be checking into in the meantime is what actually caused the motor to blow...Was it a corroded wire on the engine harness ? was it a bad connection on of the injector signal wires? Was it a bad maf signal? Was it bad CAS signal also? Was it bad gas? Was it too much boost? was it bad plugs? I mean there could be all kinds of shit that could have contributed to it....usually that is not a common failure unless the motor itself was alreeady shitty.

I think it was just too much boost on stock internals for way to long. heres a mod list.

That is your problem...
I tune cars that run up to 20 PSI of boost on 91 octane...piss gas...but they have real time tuneable programmable EMS like PFC or Haltech whcih we dyno tune on a steady state dyno...Cars are bullet proof...did iI mention this is on stock bottom end, in fact we have done a few 400 WHP stock head gasket and basically stock long block setups too...
Who did the rom tune and what was it tuned for?

That is extremely critical!!!!!
You should not be driving a car unless you know exactly what the ECU is setup for

Sounds more like "I bought the car, and drove it at 7k rpm for two days."
You guys beat on these engines like they're bulletproof.

the ecu has a rom tune set up for 14 psi on the t28.
and the burnt thing is that i never took it past 5k rpms. i only went that high 2 times (which everyone does after buying a car)
I purchased a long block so now im just gona do a swap instead of complete rebuild.

Umm...
Maybe you should rebuild the new longblock. Remember these are used engines, and they are not MEANT to be run at 14/15 psi. EVER. Nissan didn't make this thinking 'Hmmm, let's make them run perfectly with a bigger turbo, and more heat, and more pressure, and harsher conditions'.
Please, if you are going to 'go big', then do it right. Atleast put in new pistons and bearings.
P.S. I'm not saying that sr20s CAN'T handle it, I'm just saying they weren't meant to handle it. If you want more power, make it RELIABLE.

Just because it didn't come from the factory running 14-15 PSI does not mean it can't handle that much safely (from a T28). If the tune was right and the engine was in good health that should've been no problem.
Your cheapest option would be to find a good condition block and swap that over but I would just build what you have. That way you know exactly what you're getting and have a bulletproof bottom end.

BLOWN MOTOR IS OFFCIALLY OUT OF MY CAR. already assembled most things onto the new block already (intake manifold, thermastat, alternator, etc..) going to drop it in today. I took lots of pics ill be sure to put them up
