View Full Version : redtop w/ s14 t28 - hesitation boosting + overheats only when going uphill

My car hesitates during boost. Starting from 1.5k RPM the engine will feels like it's hesitating the entire way up the RPM band. It just doesn't feel normal at all.

When I go uphill the car's temperature will be near the H mark by the time I get to my girl's house but the temps are totally fine if I just drive it on the freeway and stay under boost.

my BOV is going off and the turbo seems to be spooling correctly. It almost feels like the car is not getting the right mixture of fuel during the boost. Am I correct?

Suggestions aside from what I listed below?

What I got:

- redtop w/ s14 t28
- walboro fuel pump
- manifold
- greddy intercooler w/ piping & SARD R2d2 BOV
- 3" turbo back (elbow, downpipe, catback)
- DIF turbo lines w/ s14 t28 restrictor
- DIF clocking adaptor for T28 on redtop

what I checked so far:

- CAS
- TPS
- timing (15 deg btdc)
- replaced thermostat with nismo thermostat
- re-installed the manifold, turbo and elbow with new gaskets, new studs and locking nuts to ensure good seal.

What I will check during the week:
- re-check my intercooler piping for boost leaks
- try a new maf
- clean throttle body and AICV

you've mechanically checked your timing, and then ran the motor and checked the timing with a light correct?

My timing was spot on mechanically but was off by 5 degree's.

your car probably feels like how this looked.

once my timing was adjusted and was spot on with the light.

Solid all the way up to the top. This issue plagued me for months, seems my cas bolts were loose and the hotpipe touches it so it was causing it to walk.

I also experienced the overheating going up hills running at 90 to 108 degree's Celsius. Now the car runs a lot cooler especially at night, but isn't sitting at 105 celcius during the hot summer days.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will have my timing redone just to be safe.

just thought I'd mention, when I do go uphill. I have like zero power. Once I lose the momentum, I have to climb the rest of the way in 2nd, sometimes 1st just to make it up there.

is it puffing out a lot of black smoke when these things are happening?

If it's more of a clean mis fire feeling then it's ignition and you should chekc your coil pack harness ground. Sometimes these come loose and when the car is doing certain things, up hill down hill, lateral gs etc will flex the motor on the mounts and put stress on the connection if the bolt is backing out, seen this several times, super easy fix too!

if it's still not that, PM me! I am here to help!!!!!

Trying to get my zilvia presence back up again, been sol working on other projects lately

cheers

no smoke whatsoever, just hesitation the moment the car starts boosting.

I already checked my coil pack ground but will check it again later today to make sure that it didn't come loose.

having my timing checked tonight, will update when thats out of the way.

om1kron hit it right on the mark, it was all timing.

we fuked with the timing and ended up with 20 deg

yeah, we first set timing at 15deg btdc after the swap (stock), but that didn't work.

After looking at om1kron's charts, I kind of had a feeling he was right so I went back to my friend and he played with the timing some more, right now I'm at 20 deg and the car pulls nice and evenly across the entire RPM range.

thx guys.

I'd put it as close to 15 as you can get, you don't want it adding or not adding enough fuel to the mixture.

yeah, I'm hoping to try to get it close to 15 eventually and figure out why we had to go so high to get it to run good.

we re-checked everything else and all is well, so we were surprised 20deg made the car run good.

Have you done a compression check?

Is there a lot of air in your cooling system?

Buy a surge tank/swirl pot for your cooling system once you make sure the compression is ok
