View Full Version : no start up idle and stalls when thermostat opens

some one please chime in and tell me whats wrong.
i have no start up idle/elevated idle. i start my car, it revs to 1100 then drops to 850 and sits there. when it warms up and the thermostat opens, the idle drops to 600 and below, then stalls. if i start it back up, it idles at 850-900 then drops and stalls. WTF!
i recently cleaned my iacv thinking it would help with this and nothing changed at all.
i have used the idle set screw to adjust the idle with no results. on my afc, the tps voltage closed is at .525v
im going to check for vacuum leaks today when i get back, i have a consult im going to plug into today(hopefully it works), and im going to check my base timing.
i have a s13 sr in s14 chasis with an enthalpy tune. base timing should be set at 15 degrees with that tune.
car runs great, afr is dead on, it just doesnt want to idle correctly.
any ideas?

Try replacing the throttle position sensor. A bad TPS can cause havoc in an ECU. Or try cleaning the EGR valve (exhaust gas return) if you still have it installed. Those would be the most likely and cheapest/easiest problems to fix. It could also be that the ECU is stuck in limp home mode or closed loop because of the O2 sensor or engine/coolant temp sensor. I am no expert but maybe since no one else has chimed in this will help. :hs:

tps should be working properly. couldnt tell ya if i have an egr. im pretty sure when the swap was done(5 years ago) it was removed. ecu isnt in limp mode because the car drives great.
im thinking coolant temp sensor...i will research that and see what the symptoms are.
Thanks,
Jay

Easy, look for something called the fast cam idle... which basically pushes the tps out when cold and as things get warm it reduces the idle.... Refer to FSM....

lots of info on google... i will add this to my list of things to check today
Thanks
anyone else
Blow off valve stays open at idle?(if you have it atmosphere)

bov is good.
just hooked up the consult program and i have no clue how to use it...i should say i dont know how to use it to put the car into timing mode
also, cold starts it runs like dog shit, now that its warm, fires right up and runs fine. idle is still a bit low but it idles.
looked for the fast idle cam dealy...cant find it. i have a greddy intake manifold so it makes it hard to see anything on the throttle body. also, it doesnt even look like its there. i could be wrong, being that this is the first time i heave heard of this thing.
im gonna check for vacuum leaks now and see whats up.

no vacuum leaks. checked all intercooler joints, intake, intake manifold, and injectors.
hooked up the consult and as soon as i go into idle adjustment the car stalls. im gonna read up on using it before i break something.

Yeah I think its eliminated on the greddy intake....oh wellz.... Check for IACV leak and clean the IACV on the intake...

checked and cleaned iacv the other day. still no luck. gonna change it out with another one i have, see what happens.

replaced the iacv valve today, cant say it made any real difference. i have a new coolant temp sensor coming tomorrow.
i dont have a fast idle cam...the FSM is s14 sr and its totally different from the s13 sr. unless someone can take some pics and show exactly where this thing is.
any one think of anything else?
i got a car show sunday and a race next friday. REALLY want to get this thing fixed.

im thinking theres gotta be a vacuum leak somewhere

no leaks garunteed i checked, checked again, and checked again. even did the brake cleaner trick on all fittings and even injectors.
