How much will in cost me to rebuild a RB26DETT? Seems that most mechanics

tell me that since its an old engine the Pistons might be bad due to a leak down

test. But if the car has been sitting for awhile is it going to give me a bad leak

down?

dude, this isn't an answer we can give. It can range from $500-$1500+

You first of all need to have the block in your posession, then go to a good machine shop, get them to check the block over first, then i'd buy 0.020 overbore pistons, and get them to bore it to match the pistons if its got no issues.

Then if you want serious horsepower, change rods, and go low compression pistons, 8:5-ish compression, and upgraded wrist pins and new proper bearings (not necessarly clevette or whoever, but the proper size within clearance)

There is so much more I can tell you, but thats just the basics.

The little stuff like gaskets and such add up real quick too.

this is an rb26, so buying parts will get expensive... FAST

If you get some stock pistons, piston rings, rods, and all that you can cut down on price considerably. there is no point in going .020 over, unless you are looking for some fucking insane power...

so to answer your questions:
1- if you do it yourself, the cost of the internals, and your time.
if you do it through a mechanic, expect somewhere in the realm of $1,000.00

2- time the car has been sitting shouldn't effect the results of a leakdown to my knowledge....

Well I have the whole engine in my possession and I was looking at JE pistons which I'm seeing that its not cheap. Now I've heard to rebuild it can cost me anywhere from 4k to 5k... Does anyone know any machine shops I can call...??

Thats what I thought to but when I called nissan they told me that I should install the engine and then do a leak down once the engine is warm and running

why do you think the engine is bad anyway? get it running see if theres anything wrong. or take off the head and see if the pistons alright. if you want you can just rebuild it with all oem parts. but replace the head gasket and studs and all that with better ones. there are people running 500 to the wheels all stock internals

oh and get the rb25 rebuild dvd. that thing is really helpful lol. but rebuilding the engine yourself is really not that hard once u know what goes where n stuff like that.

and just call around your local machine shops to get your block and head milled. shouldnt be exipensive. i got my head decked for 50 bucks. which i thought was a good deal
