View Full Version : SR smoking, running super rich, won't rev

So this problem started a few weeks ago- For some backround on the setup, its an S13 SR with 550cc denzo injectors (new-ish from Touge Factory), HKS 264/264 cams, new S14 T28, rocker arm stoppers, Walbro255lph fuel pump, oem coil packs, NGK iridium plugs.

A couple weeks ago I was parking and noticed exhaust smoke coming up through the shifter, and shrugged it off.

Got home, car was smoking more, but not burning any coolant or oil- exhaust smoke JUST smells like gas.

The next day, the car wouldn't rev over 1400-1500rpms, but instead just sputter and backfire once it reached that threshhold..

Tried cleaning the MAF, nothing, but it idled a little better. Bought a new one, and nothing.

Car idles strong, but just keeps smoking and misfiring around 1500rpms.

I heard it could be an ignitor chip or TPS sensor, but I'm not as farmiliar with motor issues as the rest of you may be.

Any help is appreciated.. thanks.

Any ideas? The car's temporarily down anyway.. doing a 5lug swap,, but id like to fix the issue asap regardless.

ive had a bad water temp sensor do simular things. shitty idle and super rich at idle. its a cheap fix so try it. the one to the ecu.

car overheated a couple weeks ago.. could that contribute to it?

I see a list of modifications but no where did you mention a tune?

1) igniter - but would probably be more intermittent
2) safc tune reset itself and/or has gotten out of wack somehow
3) turbo is shot or possibly some sort of boost leak

550's are a bit too much for a safc tune also...I was talking with enthalpy and they said s15 injectors were almost too much...just a thought.

i had 550s on a t3/t4 setup, but now im running the t28.. it was tuned on the safc during that, and ran fine.

turbo is just about brand new.. it has a tiny compressor surge leak, but not sure where from, because I cant find any boost leaks.

How could the tune reset itself? And would a dyno tune with an SAFC be a huge difference from the current tune?

safc tunes are like putting a band aid on a broken leg.

get a real tune dude. first, replace your ects, because that could have gone bad when it overheated. i had a similar problem, but it wont fuck with your car as much as yours is messing up. then, get a dyno tune.

I am not sure on the specifics of a safc and how it would re-set itself, but I do have a friend over here who just had his power fc reset on him and now his car is running stupid rich. My advise, get a real tune...you may be able to get away with using a safc, but it is not in your best interest. you should use your safc to help fine tune a rom tune. i think these things, along with making sure your car does not have a boost leak/curing your compressor surge issue will make a world of difference.
