Yes! Everybody in Europe goes ape shit during the world cup.

The German national team lost two of its primary squad players already, including the team captain.

We'll see.

Anyways, I support the the good AKA England and this is shaping up to be a WONDERFUL world cup for us...England is one of the faves, but I hope that they won't crack under the HUGE pressure of English fans.

Oh and I'll just leave this here... :)

I usually always have faith on Argentina but now i'm all about my Quaresma and Portugal y Espana (SPAIN)

June 11th first rounds correct? Lets do this!

I hate England so I hope the US kicks the living crap out of them which will be hard with Rooney and that power they have.

HalveBlue, more of the world goes ape over the true sport of football. It's easier to name the handful of countries that don't care for it. I got Mexico, the US and to stay on my girlfriend's good side, Brasil.

chato, I don't understand your comment.

I've lived in both the US and Europe so I am well versed in the eternal "football" rivalry. FWIW, I enjoy both sports.

I guess what I was trying to get at in my original post is that in Europe, just like much of the rest of the world (US and some other countries excluded), life grinds almost to a standstill while some of these games are going on.

I just wish I would've been in Germany in '06 when they were hosting the cup. :(

I'll hold off on my pick for this cup's winner. A lot of strong teams out there this time around. Although deep down, I wouldn't mind seeing an underdog team like Ivory Coast win.

I was just saying the same thing you just did, "life grinds almost..." but not just in Europe. I'm often also hoping some of those weaker teams, like Trinidad and Tobago, win some of the friendly matches but when they're playing against my team its hard to wish those guys good intentions. It would be nice, though, to see an underdog win it all and have their moment.

They're not as big of an underdog as you'd think. They are in a tough group (of death) but I've picked them (in general and in my soccer pool) to move on to knock out stages.

Yes, Italy won in '06. They beat France in the final.

But Internazionale isn't represented in the World Cup.

Football Club Internazionale Milano is an Italian team playing in the Serie A, the first tier of the Italian football league. They won the UEFA Champions League Cup a couple of weeks ago.

However, league teams do not compete in the World Cup, which is an international competition between the varying national teams.

The teams are suppose the get the ball in advance and test it out , prior to the WC. Most teams did not take advantage. Well that's the word.

I've had the chance to use an official match Jabulani ball and I can say that it's going to be tough for the goalies. The ball really dips and sky's at will. There were crosses heading my way that looked like it was over my head till it got close and I noticed that it dropped a LOT!...

Also I was hitting corners of the goal a lot easier then usual.

I gotta admit that the thermally bonded skin makes the ball look sleek! One of the better looking balls used in the WC.

even so, i wouldn't even be surprised if england floundered once they got into the knockoff stage because alot of their defense has been hurt during the EPL and wayne rooney is their only goal threat, who seemed to peak in march.

I hope the US and England go through but it's up in the air how they will do beyond that.

spain and argentina will be strong for sure.

i'm really hoping for a great tournament! i can't wait to watch football again and chill with homies!!!! for the love of the game

England has what it takes up front for goals (Finally) but depending on what formation they are planning to run, the mid might take some time to adjust. Oh and then there's the goalie situation...

The US and England will make it out of the group but it's going to be REALLY tough for the US to get far. I think England will get far (And win it all) if they can keep it together and grind it out.

Furia ROJA!! i think Spain has a great chance to win the cup England will get out of the group stages along with the USA , but i wouldnt be surprised if they dont make it out of the knock-out stages Fernando Torres Hasn't played in a friendly match yet and is actually the only Spanish player to do so, but will be 100% fit when Espana play the Swiss on the 16th,

Drogba Is out with a Broken Arm so that kinda messed up my Suprise team to watch ,it's gonna be alot harder for the ivory Coast to get pass the group of death along side Brazil,Portugal and the north korea.

Another team to watch out for is the Netherlands , Very under rated and dangerous
the likes of Van Pirsie, Kuyt,Babel, Robben, Sneijder, Von Bommel, De jong, Van der Vaart, and Huntelaar i see holland making it to the Final take my word for it

6 more days CANT WAIT!!

So my Teams: Espana, USA ( hopefully get far would be a great feat to get pass the 1st knockout stages) and Holland

Yeah, but the goalkeeper was ahead of him. There has to be two opponents between you and the goal when the ball is played in order to be onside. It was definitely close, but it looked like there was only the SA defender on the goal line between the Mexican guy and the goal.

I'm not trying to be a dick but I've been playing soccer since I could walk and that first goal was offside. It was a good call from the linesman (Plus you might notice that none of the Mexican players were protesting the decision, since they knew it was off-side). ESPN has TERRIBLE commentators that don't really follow the matches well.

Since the goalie is already off the line, he is now not the last opponent, but instead Piennar became the "goalie" at the time of the pass. Since the ball is pass behind the last "defender," it is offsides. (Goalie and Piennar switched places essentially)...

Anyways what a nice start to the tourny...What a strike with the kick off goal!

I've always had trouble understanding what an offside was. I asked around, google it some years ago, but never fully understood that call. I especially have trouble understanding it on long kick passes, for example kicking a long pass from behind the half pitch line to a player with only one defender on him near striking distance from the goal. I've seen these plays called so many times. In replays the defender is pretty much next to the striker but by the time the ball reaches them both the striker has gained a step or two on the defender. Do they look at where players are standing when the ball gets kicked for a pass or when the ball has reached the intended player? Anyone care to give a true definition of what an offside would be.

Mexico got lucky on that tie. That last S. African attempt that hit the post should have sunk them. I was expecting a win from them cause the next 2 teams, IMO, are going to be tougher to beat. Blanco should start the next matches. His over the head passing was far better then all those passed balls they were kicking to each other prior to him coming into the game.

^ offsides is simply when the forward, or anyone from one team, moves past the defenders of the other before the ball does. so if the ball passes the defenders and the players follows right after, then it's ok.

Great opening games! :bigok:

Tshabalala's goal was a great! A very symbolic goal for the country and continent IMO. I thought they could have cemented a victory, had some good opportunities to do so. Its in them, I can see it, just gotta somehow follow through. I'm rooting for this underdog.

Pfffttt, France...I was going for Uruguay. Forlan almost made them weep. Too bad. Uruguay's defense was top notch.

Picks for Saturday.

GAME TIME!

Lets all be real for a quick second and ponder...

2 - 2 USA/England tie. Im calling it.

I know Dempsey and Rooney won't let it end like that, and its against my instinct, but we'll see. 3-2 is more reasonable than a 2-2 tie imo, but whatever... I am calling a tie because I can't read this game at all yet.

I'm happy to see that Germany managed to start this well into the tournament, not just the result but also the manner in which they played- calm and controlled in defence, agile, creative and with an appetite for attacking in the offence. They looked GREAT out there.

If I had to criticise something, it's that they weren't effective enough in front of the goal. I know this seems strange to say after scoring 4 goals, but we could've and should've scored even more effectively with the chances available. A ratio like today could easily come back to bite them in the ass against a stronger team. Also, Gomez sucks. As soon as he came in for Özil, our offence was dead. I know we dialed it back a bit at that time, but still. With Klose scoring and a shoe-in for the Serbia starting 11, Gomez should be a non-issue in the future.

That card was justified.

Either way, Oz was clearly outmatched.

Their strategy consisted of creating a tight defense hoping to keep the ball in midfield; real midfield play was almost completely absent. Once in possession of the ball, kick a high pass towards your man up front or on the flanks in the crossing zones, rush the rest of the team up front and hope for the best. Even when an Australian player was a in a position to take a direct shot on goal he'd more often than not go for a cross instead.

That level of competition may work in the Australian A-League but it sure as shit won't at the FIFA World Cup.

no way doods, u can see from any of the replays that cahill tries to pull out of the tackle and ends up making a tackle with his knees.... not two footed, not malicious imho, he wasn't last defender (he was in germany's half).... too be honest that case was probably like a 1/1000 call considering some of the tackles that go on a weekly basis in other leagues AND in tournaments. imho that call will set bad precedent for the remaining games... =\

it's kinda moot now, but i still think AUS was hard done with that card. after that... there was no chance they would have come back.

i wonder how italy will do. i have on paper that they will win. 3-0 perhaps?

i dont think any WC game is "easy" perse, but if they can fire on all cylinders i dont see why they can't replicate a similar result to germany. They definitely have good players to do so. And buffon is pretty hard to beat , so that's why i assume a shutout.

and at work i can't watch the game or stream it, so "on paper" is all i am going with at the moment haha

I would say so too..
but if you paid attention to the setup, they were playing with an average of 6-8 players inside the bigger goal area, whenever brazil attacked, usually teams only have 4-5 unless its a corner kick.
when you pile up so many people in there it becomes so crowded its almost impossible to penetrate. was it a good strategy? yes!

JOHANNESBURG — There are two ways for the U.S. to advance to the knockout stage of the World Cup.

After two games, Slovenia leads Group C with four points. It has one win and one tie, following a 1-0 victory over Algeria and a 2-2 draw against the United States on Friday.

The U.S. and England are tied for second with two points. The two teams tied 1-1 against each other and England drew Algeria 0-0 in Friday's late game. Algeria is last with one point.

The group ends Wednesday with two matches played simultaneously, the U.S. against Algeria in Pretoria, and England against Slovenia in Port Elizabeth.

Here is how the Americans could still advance:

1) The United States would advance with a victory over Algeria, which would give it five points. Because England plays Slovenia, one of those teams can't finish with five.

2) The United States would advance with a draw against Algeria, which would give it three points, as long as England loses to Slovenia OR England-Slovenia ends in a draw AND the U.S. maintains a goal advantage over England. Currently, the U.S. has three goals and England has one.

One scenario could lead to lots being drawn for who advances.

If the U.S. draws with Algeria and England draws with Slovenia, but England scores two more goals than the U.S. does in its last game, the U.S. and England would be even on all tiebreakers for second place.

England/Slovenia plays on Wednesday at 9:30am before the US does, so we will know exactly what is needed before we play.

Not rocket science, Fabio.

Heskey reverted to his utterly useless self, Lampard does not have the
energy to play in a 4-4-2 nor does it suit his style, Gerrard on the
left is wasted and as he drifts in it leaves Cole exposed on the left
too often.

However he obviously can't see this. He has no plan b. It's 4-4-2 or
bust. Fucking bringing off Lennon to be replaced by SWP... all the tact
of a blind man playing darts.

I was thinking of starting this thread topic but I didn't know how many footie fans are on this site. Anyways, I support the the good AKA England and this is shaping up to be a WONDERFUL world cup for us...England is one of the faves, but I hope that they won't crack under the HUGE pressure of English fans.

Oh and I'll just leave this here... :)

It's sad....England was doing so well during qualifying. I guess that's what they get for talking and hyping themselves up too much.

So how about controversial call on U.S. vs. Algeria ? I think the score should have been 3-2

It was against Slovenia. We play Algeria on Wednesday. And that call was was awful. I think you'd have a hard time finding someone who agreed with that call..

They mentioned on TV last night that he whistled his last game on the World Cup. It's not official but it seems Fifa is going to dismiss him.

Just finished the Italy - New Zealand game.
Another horrible referee, he tried his hardest to let Italy win the game.
That penalty kick was fabricated.

If Brasil contests the call fifa will have to give them the benefit, assuming fifa uses video to help determin their calls. Im almost positive the ref had his back on Kaka after the Bastos - Tiote foul had stopped play and the ref was marking where the ball should be dropped to resume play. When he turned around the Ivory Coast player was on the ground and Kaka was somewhere by midfield.

Did any of you catch the facial expressions of the N. Korean players? By the 6th goal you can tell by just looking at their faces that they had given up already. I felt bad for them. I hope their commy leader doesnt handle the country's althletes the way Sadam's sons used to handle Iraq athlete that came back home defeated.

Wow, I'm glad I caught the Portugal/N.Korea game. Ronaldo was great with his assists. Portugal just straight owned that game. I started watching when it was 1-0.

After the second goal they where just toying with them and having fun.

When they scored the 3rd goal I wanted them to score one more to match Germany's recent record.

When they scored the 4th I wanted them to score one more to beat Germany's recent record.

After they scored the 5th goal I was like crap! Well, I guess the icing on the cake would be that Ronaldo finally gets his goal.

Then Ronaldo scored the 6th goal in the oddest of fashions, he was even surprised he pulled it off. I was satisfied there.

Then they scored the 7th and they showed the sad faces of the Korean fans in the audience, felt bad after that one, lol.

Brazil/Portugal game is gonna be awesome! :bigok:

This has gotten out of hand because Ribery is causing much of the problems with in the team. L'Equipe has followed this story for a few years now. He tried to attach himself to Zidane back in 06 but Zidane was aware of his issues then. This was from L'Equipe paper. He is good when he wants to be but he is also an ulcer to the team.

The fact is, France needs to play a system that can accomadate all the stars/egos. It's not like a club team with one or two who run the show. Everyone wants to rome the midfield or attack. They all play out of position because they are not happy. What can the FFF do better? These are the best players France has. Benz and Nasri did not play well this year or more like "at all". How can you pick them over Anelka or Govou or Gourcruff after they had excellent seasons at their clubs? Benz barely made it off the bench for Real Madrid adn Nasri was hurt all the time. My only issue has been with Trezeguet. He should have been on the team. Valbuena was excellent along with Gignac and Cisse. Squillaci, Planus, Reveillere, Malouda, and Anelka had great seasons. I would like to have seen Planus, Gignac, and Valbuena start over the Govou, Gallas, and Diaby.

They are up for a big challenge this Sunday. I think they could poke holes in Argentina's defense (they are weak on the counter attack as was shown today versus Greece)...If they find their finish, Argentina could find themselves in trouble...

Honestly i doubt it. Mexico has like a 5% chance of a win. I know if it argentina vs uruguay i would have have been worried as fuck and hope for a tie to penalty kicks. No one has yet to score on Uruguay thanks to their defense. Aswell as chile netherlands and portugal but they all have the hardest games still to play this week so we will see how long that will remain.

Quit sounding like a hater man. An extrememly large Mexican and Mexican - American population contributes to the ratings of Univision so there's no wonder why people like Argentinian Fernando Fiore, Venezuelan Raul Gonzalez or Puerto Rican Rafael J. Diaz seem unbiased even though they may have their own favorite team in the tournament.

The shit talking flies both ways. You think Mexicans liked how El Salvador's soccer fans recieved them into their country for a friendly match wearing face masks and talking about El Tri carrying that one pig flu into their country? I certainly didnt appreciate it, but hey, thats how it goes with sports fans. You know how that heat in the kitchen saying goes.
