View Full Version : KA-T Problem. NEEEEED HEEEELLLLLPPPPPP

Hey guys, need help from some ka-t gurus. To start off, here's my setup.

DOHC KA.
Weisco 9:1 pistons
Eagle h-beam rods
cometic head gasket
arp studs (everywhere in the motor at least...)
GTIR T28
top feed fuel rail
RC 550cc inj.
mallory fpr (32psi vac. 40ish unvac)
Z32 mafs
ssac manifold
innovative wideband
Enthalpy tune
SAFC 2

Here's a background summary. I've had my ka-t setup since '06. Few drift events, I drive the car seasonally. That is, I have a daily that I drive most of the time, but when summer time comes, the 240 is the main source of transportation. I do NOT drive like a jackass on the street, I am a very conservative driver on public roads.

Recently, I was driving from work, got home, parked the car, went inside and called it a night. Next morning, I went to start the car and no go. The motor cranked like normal, however no start. After a few tries, I figured the cylinders were full of fuel so I pulled the fuel pump fuse out and cranked. The car started, but ran rough.... REALLY rough and fuel smoke was pouring out of the exhaust. However, that's not what freaked me out. With the fuel pump fuse still OUT and the car still running... i was able to drive the car from the front of my house, all the way to the back and into the garage.

I checked over all of the basic stuff. I have spark, fuel, compression. Checked the IC piping for leaks as well as random vacuum lines. Replaced the MAFS with a known good one. Checked the OHMS for each injector (which read 13ohms for all four). Replaced the coolant temp sensor with a NEW one from NISSAN.

Finally, I narrowed it down the the SAFC. So, I reconnected the MAF signal wire on the ecu back to factory. After doing so, the car cranked and started up perfectly fine. No missing cylinder, just smooth as before. Only problem, my afr's were reading 9.8 to 10 at idle. I see a small stream of smoke from the exhaust, smells like gas (obviously)

I'm guessing ecu?

p/s for those of you who like to jump on the thread bashing bandwagon keep your comments to yourself. I dont care what your thoughts of my setup or diagnostic procedures are, just stfu. Just need other ideas to alleviate this problem.

Thanks in advance

I am not a KA-T guru, but I have been working with SAFC's for a very long time.
If you reconnected the MAF wire back to the ECU, meaning the SAFC no longer takes the MAF signal, I would assume it would be a problem with the SAFC. It could be that your SAFC settings got messed up, was initialized, or the communication between the SAFC and ECU is incorrect.
If you want me to check if your SAFC settings are correct, feel free to post them up.

Well, the SAFC was installed the same time as the ecu almost 3 years ago. I've never made much corrections, just used it for dec. air settings. I understand that the SAFC could have initialized or something crazy happened. However, my biggest concern is, with the MAF wire reconnected at the ecu, the motor is running really rich at idle even with an enthalpy tune.

Again

the SAFC is f*cking garbage

I dont know why you guys get talked into putting these on your cars, just because they can convert a maf to work doesnt mean it's good for your cars, or your poor wiring harnesses.

Get a standalone. Period. Save your money, turn tricks whatever it takes.

sweet. well... if you read anything i typed you'd know i have a tuned ecu for the maf and just using the safc for dec air setting. plus, why the hell would i get a stand alone for a simple t28 setup. thanks for the input.

p/s. dont expect me to suck your dick because of your post count. Your website is f*cking garbage, get a real website designer like kevtrinh to do your shit save your money, turn tricks whatever it takes

also, the safc wasn't the problem. i figured it out without the help of a "premier" zilvia dyno and remote tuner or whatever title you want to put on your ghetto shit.. get your head out of your ass.

This is all i asked and he couldn't even do that. Didn't mean to be an asshole, but i feel that stating safc sucks dick this and safc sucks dick that isn't helping other members out, nor this forum.

First I would pull the fuel rail from the intake leaving the fuel lines attached and the fuel pump fuse removed turn the ignition to the on position(not start) and see if you have bad injector o-rings. You also need to pull your dip stick and check for fuel in your oil. replace your oil if you smell fuel.
