Hello,
I have an Apexi Twin chamber bov installed in my '96 S14 (practically stock, just a custom exhaust). And every time I release the gas pedal fuel detonates in the exhaust. I understand the problem with the MAF sensor and the bov and why this detonation thing happens. The thing I wanna know is:
HOW much damage does my car sustain from these??
Should I hurry and fix it with an APex'i S-AFC pronto, or there isn't really that much harm?
In winter it was quite OK, but now it's hot and after just 3-5min city driving I get bursts that reach the end of my muffler every time I release the gas pedal.

Your car doesn't face much damage as it's only rich for a short amount of time, but the cat converter is taking a beating.
On a side note: is this on a N/A KA or an SR? I don't understand how it would open if it was N/A as it never reaches positive pressure. You can easily correct it with an SAFC if you already have one, but don't buy one just to corrections.

what I do not understand is why would he put a BOV if he has N/A?!?

My car has a SR20DET engine. Turbo, naturally :) And It doesn't have a catalic converter, it was cut out =]
Thanks for the advice. Maybe buying an SAFC only for this would really be an overkill. Will have to find another way to solve this.
Maybe You know other ways? rather than changing driving style or removing bov :D

Well the main concern here is exactly the turbo. I fear that these explosions in the exhaust make the turbo spin/accelerate way too fast..

no it will not harm the turbo because its happening in the exhaust
my car dose this also has for a lil over a month now. It wont do anything to the car or motor. You are just runing rich and need a tune. Not running a catalytic converter also dose this some times on a un-tuned sr. I am also runing a sr but i have 550cc injectors and a t28 with a chiped ecu. soon to be power fc .
Also to add to this what dose the BOV have to do with the back fire. BOV stops turbo surge

well according to understanding and research on the internet the fuel dumping cause of the bov goes like this:
The air flow sensor sends the information of the measured amount of air to the ecu. The Bov, being installed further down the intake and not included in ECU caculations, releases the previoslly calculated air out to the atmosphere, but the ECU still thinks it has the calculated amount and injects fuel accordingly, causing a very rich mixture and dumping the unexploded fuel into the hot exhaust.
Or have misunderstood something?

get a gauge for your AFRs before you do anything. It kinda tells you what your engine is doing.

Set your bov tighter, check for exhaust leaks, don't decel in gear and just run the bitch.
This is how it is running atmosphere dump.

your BOV on the HOT pipe or COLD pipe

that's why you should recirculate the BOV.

It's on the COLD pipe..

Just have your car tuned or buy a tuned ecu. i dont think there is much you can do unless you recirculate the BOV.
this is how i have mine

Thank You All for the advices ;) Everything's much clearer now. Guess I'll really have to get it tuned... but damn recirculating the BOV seems tough :D

i dont know if this was mentioned above but to much poping can atually bent valves

clearly you don't know what you're talking about.
explain please, how a rich mixture, igniting in his EXHAUST, will "bend" a valve inside the combustion chamber?
BURNING an valve seat is one thing, but BENDING a valve is an entirely different matter.

Cuz they read it in the interweb so it must be true.
Back to the OP, you dont need a tune. Just leave it alone. All your doing is burning off the rich mixture. If it bothers you that much, recirculate the BOV back into the intake neck.
