View Full Version : sr20det Swap noob. Is it this easy?

I've been pricing out the swap and had originally planned to have it installed by a shop. But after lots and lots of research the gist of it seems to be:
-sr20det into 93 240sx
-Engine and transmission swaps in directly
-Power steering is compatible
-Fuck Ac
-Modify wiring harness like so -http://www.frsport.com/SR20DET-Swap-Engine-Harness-Wiring-Diagram-Guide-SR-SR20_t_26.html
-http://zilvia.net/f/engine-tech/293028-ultimate-s13-sr-wiring-guide.html
-or just buy it
-All other connectors should just plug and play
-Swap Cluster/fluids
-Turn key and boom?
I'll probably buy a front clip from phase2 just so I make sure I have everything. I've never done a swap but have worked on cars before, and I'm a mechanical engineer so that should help. I'm ready to be flamed, but I just want to make sure I'm not jumping in over my head before committing to buy.
PS, I've searched and searched, but just want to make sure I'm understanding correctly.

worst you can do is buy it not knowing nothing about it and then making it your main means of transportation. Like every other newbie here.

Haha, I have another daily driver. And I have sufficient funds to pay someone to do the swap for me, but after looking deeper it seems like its pretty strait forward. I know little problems always pop up, and I can understand that. I just want to know how deep the pool is before I dive in head first. :2f2f:

Well, it seems like you've done a little bit of research. Yes, it's really easy to do especially with the amount of info available to everyone these days. If it makes you anymore confident, grab one of those SR20 swap dvds and use it for reference.

If you plan on installing yourself getting a front clip will be the easiest because it save you lots of money if you use many of the stock components and upgrade later.
Highly suggest installing new gaskets and oil seals and replacement parts like spark plugs, filters, o2 senor while the engine is out and easier to work on.
Also be prepared to be nickeled and dimed on little odds and ends.

Alright so my front clip came in and I am about to do the swap but had one question. The lower engine harness/transmission harness; can I use the sr20det one? Or do I have to swap the KA harness over, this lower harness needs no modification right?
And second I will be using the JDM cluster so I do NOT need to swap speed sensor right?
I'll keep this thread updated with my progress and will post some pics of the clip tomorrow if I get the chance.
Keep both, But whats the point in using the JDM cluster?

My HUD is burnt and the cluster also doesnt light up at night =(. Its pretty annoying. What do you mean by keep both? Which transmission harness should I use and do I need to modify it?
Good progress toady, motor is ready to be pulled out of the clip, got all vacuum hoses etc.

Use the KA harness, transfer over to the SR tranny the corresponding sensors. IIRC, the KA tranny has one extra sensor that you wont be needing to transfer to the SR since it doesnt have a place for it.
Only other thing that you'd have to play around with is the heater core lines. You'd have to play around with it a bit if you've never done it before.
Lastly, like some folks already stated, change out maintenance related items on the engine while its out, ie: thermostat, waterpump, check for dents on the oil pan, etc.

Small victory. Got her out of the clip, clutch is stock and has plenty of life so its either new or the owner went pretty easy. Wanted to do more but I gotta get ready to walk for graduation, minor inconvenience lol. She has 50k miles and came with digital CC which was a nice surprise. Going to get smogged with the KA still in there and continue on.
Only bad thing is there is salt residue ALL OVER the thing, going to degrease the hell out of her.
Still unsure on lower/transmission harness. Saw a video with Yuri from WS saying you can use the JDM harness with no modifications so, I'll try that first and then if it doesn't work out I'll swap in the KA harness. Just a reminder this is a s13 blacktop into a s13 93 240sx. So I think I can go ahead and use the sr20det lower engine harness.

Nearly there, couldn't get the damn oil filter off so I'm going to get a filter socket and try tomorrow. Then new fluids and she should be ready for a test fire. Some things I learned the hard way:
The AIV will hit the steering column
Put the motor and transmission in as one piece
Don't buy a used car that has been worked on by a back yard mechanic
The throttle cable is too short, made a bracket for it
Swap is pretty strait forward but there are tons of little problems you just have to deal with and solve
And tons of other stuff I probably forgot.
Wired the harness myself so I'm excited and crossing my fingers that there are no problems and she fires up first time. Also have the blow off recirc'd at the moment but was wondering what you guys use to block off the intake hole if I wanted to vent it, you know for the pssshhh.

Started her up today!!! First try... Just kidding I reversed the fuel lines but she started right up afterward.
BUT it is making a clicking noise from the intake manifold, at first I though it was rod knock or something but it isn't because when I rev the engine the engine slows but the the clicking noise is still fast for a short moment after the engine then it slows down. I am thinking it could be the injectors?? Also found out today royal purple is actually purple... haha.

Good job man, how long has it taken you to take out the ka and put everything in so far?
I'm thinking about swapping a blacktop soon

Took me like 6 half days, working about 4-6 hours a day. It is fairly strait forward but there are always those little problems you run into. I also had access to a full shop so that helped a lot.
Another problem I have, my temp sensor reaches hot really fast, like maximum. I am using a sr radiator, clutch fan, and shroud so this really doesn't make sense. It also did this with the KA, on the dohc cluster. I haven't tried swapping in the JDM cluster yet but I am thinking it might be the cluster.
Also the two guides I used to wire the harness that were incredibly awesome.

The injectors are tied to RPM, so the clicking sound you hear is probably something else. Could it be the turbo? It's the only thing I can think that would still be spinning or operating independently of the engine. You can use a long extension to put on the engine and your ear like a stethoscope.
