i'm kind of getting bored with 240's, having owned like 5 so far.

so i'm looking into getting one of these sc300's, i might trade my s13 for a manual 92.

anyone have any special things that i should look before? besides the obvious leaks/rust/noises/etc.

any experience/tips/input/flaming will be appreciated.

here's some pics to help the thread

but owning 5 240's makes it less of a big deal lol

and on a side note, yeah risky d is nice and all but jesus christ wtf is it with every1 on zilvia hanging from their nuts -- OP you live in NJ, risky devil is in IL; i suggest you find a crew that reps NJ and support your people

It is old, heavy and small. If i were you, I would save up more money and get a IS300 w/ manual transmission.

im sure if hes looking for an sc300 he wouldnt want a 4 door.

but dude it might be hard to find an decent sc300 for an s13.. unless yours has some good money into it. but there motors run strong and the torque is nice. but yeah an manual would be hard to find. but you can find a 2jz-ge 5 speed for cheap.

love sc300s.

Just too heavy and I am almost done with my 240 finally so no point in starting another project.

Finding one with black interior is hard, dash lights go out on almost all of them, cracked leather, etc.

also check out the first gen GS300.. another good chassis with potential imo.

i'd absolutely love a gs300, if they came manual.

and apparently a manual swap in them is a huge pain.

what changes will i see going from a 2700lb s13 to a 3500lb sc?

i rode in a sc300 @ adams (local track)

the car felt like an oversized s13

i have a 92 5 speed, and some common problems are the cluster needles going dim or flickering, some gauges don't work from time to time, its usually the cluster itself, another problem they have are the climate control lighting goes out. Check out Club Lexus they are pretty legit...

I had a 95 Sc300 black interior renissance red. i loved that thing.
Pros
Its very safe, doors are like very thick, the front end is strong, and it has rigidity.
Reliable, its a dam toyota motor for god sake.
very comfy
rides nice.
it had the cooldest ac.

Cons
parts for it are expensive
leather cracks easily
the door mechanisms fail often leaving you locked out if both of them fail
guage needles go out, but are easy to replace with leds
climate control backlight goes out
hard to find in manual transmission
power steering hoses leak and are preety pricey to fix

over all its a good car, but expect to spend a preety penny to fix it up...

I was looking into the Lexus SC's alot last year. I think I'd rather get the SC400 and do a 5spd swap on that. At least you'll have a leg up on all the other guys wanting to swap V8's into their cars... Seems like the 1UZ-FE doesn't get turbo'd much though. Supercharger + Nitrous might be the way to go.

yes mr. akaishi your sc is awesomely low.

how much fun was the motor swap?

i'm guessing it's manual?

and falkon that looks really good

and i agree that the kits for these cars aren't too easy to distinguish between each manufacturer.

imho these cars need a wing to not make it look so "slopey"

These cars are heavy, but theres lots of sensible weight reduction mods you can do to get down to about 350Z weight or lighter...

Just picked mine up about two weeks ago. 98, with black leather interior. Really wish they made the 98 sc300's in standard, but i can do that well down the road. Yeah the car is heavy, but it's so comfortable inside!

it's lowered on Tanabe Springs and KYB struts with supra TT wheels. Hate the wheels, but they'll do for now.

They are good cars. Not many major problems with them. My biggest complaint is real quality suspension parts are super exspensive. $4500+ for Arms and such.

I'd trade my car for a nice s14 though. It'd be nice to have a car that had part out the wazoo for 1/3 the cost of SC parts

Car's are fucking awesome.

My girlfriend got one in sept. 09 to replace her 160K mile 91 Hatch as a daily driver. so naturally i have been driving her sc alot since then. Ever since that i have loved these cars always liked them but man, for having 198K miles on it as of today i can't believe how smooth the car is (still on stock suspension) the previous owner of her car has alot of the documents on the car showing it was 50,385 new in 1996. Her car is White/tan auto SC300. the car is pretty "slow" in stock form but they respond very well with mods. the weight is what hurts the performance but makes the car that much nicer. i would love to get a SC300 with a GTE swap and coils/wheels and just drive the wheels off it.

Common issues -
window motors go out pretty often.
Starter's are a PAIN IN THE ASS to replace on a SC400
the serp. belt tensioner on the SC300's go out around 200K miles.
they get pretty poor mileage (20-23mpg) is normal for her driving like a normal person) plus they run on 93 octane.
the hvac lights go out, the radio lights go out as well asthe cluster lights and the gauge needles. uhm the trunk shocks also go out on pretty much EVERY SC out there.

good luck finding an original 5spd SC300 as they only made 3,500?

very nice cars though it would be hard to part with it for another S13.

I have one. It is an original 5spd. The control arm bushings are shot (common), same with the gauge needles.

Stupid toyota decided to make the needles the bulb, so you can't just toss new bulbs in and bet on your way.

There is a dude who does needles and wants like $100. You could get the JDM Soarer digital cluster, and it wil works except the fuel level won't work since the jdm cars use a different method to measure fuel compared to ours.

A bunch of parts cross over from the Supra, so you can get the same parts for a lot less since there isn't any luxury bullshit markup.

They see stretched tires and camber and they start having hot flashes.

lmao :keke:
ironically alot of them look down on zilvia because of the kids running around with drift missiles as daily drivers makes them stereotype that all 240 owners are like that.

Consider this, I got tired of getting shit on my 240 when they became popular, be it worrying about theft, the now cocky attitudes of some people who take cars way too seriously, or just getting in trouble with the law etc, so got something that wasnt as popular, fc rx7 was cool for me.

It may be a nice change of pace, driving more often without worrying about if some kid is gonna try to steal it or follow you home and plan to take it. Since its a lexus, alot less cock attention and more female play :snoop:

But, like others have said, a much smaller aftermarket and community may get borring at times, esp when you want to try something that isnt well documented or no one having done it before.

ya i do get a lotta attention in the s13, mostly cock, rarely female.

right now i don't have many worries just not sure if i'm done with 240's yet, particularly the one i have now, which is pretty clean and cool i guess.

maybe i'll drive the sc300 and fall in love, who knows.

and ya jeez small aftermarket, coils are the same as far as prices go.

i've been having trouble finding some front camber arms.

what are some popular websites for parts?

You won't really need front camber arms.

But I'll let you know what my max posi is after I raise the front of my car a little.

I thought you were talking about the cars that people are modifying now.

Yeah, another car down the drain. They can always redo it though. It's never too late!

ONYX S-13
04-21-2010, 10:03 PM
I think the toyota just got cocky with the last Gen. Here's what Wiki said regarding the car.

At its launch, the SC 430 was marketed as the "jewel of Lexus", and as the marque's first convertible, was intended as a more ostentatious addition to the Lexus lineup.[9] Initial base price in the U.S. was $63,825

Lexus showcased its new sports convertible, the SC 430, at the Paris Motor Show in 2000, and the car entered production in March of the following year. Power was provided by a 4.3 L 3UZ-FE V8 engine with variable valve timing (VVT-i) mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. This engine was the same model as that found in the UCF30 Lexus LS. The SC 430's V8 could produce 288 hp (214.76 kW) and 430 N·m (317 lb·ft) of torque, allowing the coupe to go from 0-60 in 6.2 seconds.[8]

Third generation (20??-)

According to an article posted by USA automobile magazine Car and Driver, Lexus is working on a "clean sheet" replacement for the SC and the convertible theme will be retained with a soft top instead of the hard top setup currently being used.[22]

In July 2008, Edmunds InsideLine had reported that Lexus had cancelled the next generation SC due to slowing sales.[23] In response, a company spokesman did not confirm or deny the rumors, but called the report in the possible replacement with the introduction of the Lexus LF as "unfounded speculation."[24] Lexus subsequently announced the production of the SC 430 model for 2009,[25] and in 2010..

This "Jewel" was more like a cubic zirconium. For that price there are so many more cars that deliver so much more. Even the cheaper cars can deliver a lot more than that. Shame.

I want to get a first gen IS300 5spd instead of an SC (I have two kids) but I don't want to get let down and then be stuck with an overpriced turd. I've driven SC's and have loved them. I've driven IS's too but have not gotten the same feel. Neither was spirited driving or on the track.

Does anyone know if IS's are easy to work on with reasonable maintenance cost's (for a D.I.Y'er)?

The IS's are super easy to work on. Their like a larger honda civic lol. Lots of enigines swap into those little cars with OEM parts.

As For the SC430 I think they are the same damn thing as the SC300/400 just better in so many ways. Sure they are exspensive but so was the SC400 that car was a mid $50k car brand new with all the options. The SC430 has an amazing motor that sounds awesome and makes tons of power with just bolt ons. The interior on them is top notch if you have ever seen a black or drak green one with saddle leather. OMG. Their biggest down fall is their factory wheels are ugly as fuck and detract from the car and like the 92-96 SC300/400 they stock bodies are pretty ugly. The car has amazing body lines but in stock form its just so smooth and plain that people never see the potential.

I definitely plan on swooping one as soon as price drops to around $20k

The sound was pure ecstasy! Funny thing is that I was stuck in a grocery store and browsing through a car magazine (can't remember which one, I think it was Turbo) and the car that I saw on the freeway was featured in the mag.

Turned out the car was turboed and making a little over 500hp to the wheels. Ha ha. It was a nice dark purple color too.

Late to the party as usual with zilvia threads... But yeah, these things are cheap, cheap to make good power, and oddly reliable... I have a shitty xs power turbo kit and beat the shit out of mine all the time with about 300whp and it runs great. For the most part everything has been said, the stock seats sit super high, all the lights on the dash go out, the bushings fall apart, and the trunk shocks go out. Unlike what other people said, manuals seem to be pretty common around here, and I've found that mine has been really cheap to mod, but I've never had an s chassis to compare to.

came from an S14. My impressions after switching over, car is drastically underpowered for its weight, bushings are first things to be replaced, dash lights always go out, doors are heavy as sh!t, plenty of aftermarket support, i'd say modding this car is about the same as an S14, GTE motors easy to swap, NA-T platform is easily done, the front end is a lot longer than the S chassis so i scrape a lot more, and i get pulled over way less than i did in my S14.

This is my 2nd SC300 and although i miss the S14 i don't think i'd ever switch back.

The SC has tons of bushings for the suspension linkages for that oh so desirable luxury feel. All is cool, until time starts taking effect and those bushings start to dry out and deteriorate.

When that happens, you are left with a floppy ultra boat of a car.

S-chassis do not have this problem as bad, so the steering will feel tighter.

On an Sc is is almost a must to change the bushings out. And the needles do not use bulbs, so you will need to buy new needles which are about $100 for a full set that one dude on the forums is doing. The HVAC will start to go out as well. Then the door linkages need to be redone.

Pretty much, Sc's need to first be made stock and reliable more so than a S-chassis. As for parts, try to buy everything Supra that will fit, that way you aren't stuck paying Lexus bullshit markup.

So for people wanting to get an sc3/400, if you can't afford to keep your S-chassis running in at least oem shape, please don't try and move onto something which needs a little bit more care.

my mom has a 08 Toyota Sequoia with the 3UR-FE in it. that thing is a MONSTER in that 7,300lbs suv. and i've seen those tested anywhere from a high 14 to low 13. take about 4,000lbs off that and you have a SC3/4 and from what i've read it seems that the 3UR-FE is all aluminum. oh man i wish i had the kind of money and time to do such a thing.

It will show how shitty all of your bushings are more prevalently.

I haven't had a chance to buy/modify the PBM subframe and diff bushings. That would help cut back on the shifty rear end feel that I have. Then all it would leave me to change is the LCA bushings.

But even a 2 way would give the same feeling since there is more resistance.

Might as well do it.

yeah I meant that the auto to manual conversion now a days is a joke. Tons of Adapter plates or custom bell housings out there to bolt up W58s, R154s and V160s. Some of the swaps require no fabbing at all and can be done by two dudes in like 5-8 hours

Heres a no fab reqired kit, Quantum Auto (http://www.quantum-auto.com/) I can install this kit by my self in 4 hours. but ive done a bunch of them. Soon ill have a UR series kit as well.

They are good cars. Not many major problems with them. My biggest complaint is real quality suspension parts are super exspensive. $4500+ for Arms and such.

I'd trade my car for a nice s14 though. It'd be nice to have a car that had part out the wazoo for 1/3 the cost of SC parts

just to answer a few questions that may pop up,

That SC above would look decent if he sold off those OEM wheels, that ruckus trailer, and bought a set of wheels that are nice.

Aroddalobster

bver doesn't make stuff that would correct camber, but yeah, alex does sell a good amount of other stuff. I have his rear toe and traction rods and solid rear subframe mounts. He also sells aluminum steering rack bushings, all good quality stuff, and doesn't really drive you broke.
i know titan/daizen (i think they both used the same isht, just re-branded) eccentric upper control arm bushings that increased adjustability, but I'm not too sure if they're on the market anymore. Your only other options are adjustable arms at this point, and those can run $$$ if you get the ikeya or eau rouge. a route i took was I got tc sportline rear upper control arms (not recommended) for a jza80, and had battle version shorten my stock rear lca's, which helped correct camber and pull the hub in a bit to fit more tire under the stock metal.

obviously, camber plates wouldn't work as all the struts are bolted into the lower control arms at all 4 corners

u can probably tell... i love my sc's. don't get a manual one. the w58's are disposable once you go NA-T or above. get an auto, swap a v160 or r154 when u get the chance. r154 will fit with a jz bellhousing and the v160 just bolts up. there are two ways to go about things...

1. get a 92-97. big difference. nonvvti. the legendary, over engineering 2jzge block. already drilled for oil squirters. the internals are forged and incredibly strong. just NA-T and have fun. throw in a thicker headgasket and have even more fun. the limiting factors at this point is fuel and the distributor style ignition. even the shape of the distributor cap is limiting, but you can get a tundra cap that is a lower profile for larger turbos.

2. the route i plan on undertaking. 98 and up. comes with the vvti 2jz motor. internals are noticiably weaker, will need to be build if u wanna use this block. from this option, you can either
1. build stock bottom end
2. throw the older 2jzge non vvti block on there and good to go.
3. what i'm doing, 2jzgte swap, ls1 coils, aem standalone, single kit. fuel system. then comes rape time. like... those yoga pants had no chance kinda rape. srs shit

This is false. Yes the W58 may be weak, but not enough argument to not pick up a rare manual model. Just don't beat on it. 3rd gear is the weak link. Just take it easy.

get an auto, swap a v160 or r154 when u get the chance. r154 will fit with a jz bellhousing and the v160 just bolts up. there are two ways to go about things...

a V160/161 isn't just a bolt in affair. The tunnels on the older cars are actually narrower than the newer cars. 2 ways to solve this, beat the shit out of the tunnel, or cut and weld in the one from the MKIV. Lets not forget about the multitude of different combinations to use to find the right drive shaft.

1. get a 92-97. big difference. nonvvti. the legendary, over engineered 2jzge block. already drilled for oil squirters. the internals are forged and incredibly strong.

Nothing wrong at all with the VVTi motor. A littler harder to tune that's all. and as far as blocks go. The difference between the 2JZ-GE and 2JZ-GTE non-VVTi is that the pistons are different and the GTE had the oil squirters. Which strangely enough, a lot of the fully built motors actually scrap the oil squirters. Go figure.

just NA-T and have fun. throw in a thicker headgasket and have even more fun. the limiting factors at this point is fuel and the distributor style ignition. even the shape of the distributor cap is limiting, but you can get a tundra cap that is a lower profile for larger turbos.

Distributor, abeit being ugly as shit in the engine bay, is not a limiting factor. You can physically fit a turbo as big as a 76mm in the engine bay with it in place. Just as long as you don't use one of those shitty ebay manifolds.

2. the route i plan on undertaking. 98 and up. comes with the vvti 2jz motor. internals are noticiably weaker, will need to be build if u wanna use this block. from this option, you can either

Wrong. with proper tuning this long block will support 450 RWHP unopened

1. build stock bottom end
2. throw the older 2jzge non vvti block on there and good to go.
3. what i'm doing, 2jzgte swap, ls1 coils, aem standalone, single kit. fuel system. then comes rape time. like... those yoga pants had no chance kinda rape. srs shit

Looking at copping a 94' black/black original 5spd with 17x,xxx on it 100% stock and 2 previous owners. Anything specific I should look out for? I already know the temp gauge needle needs replacing as well as the climate screen, but the car felt really solid overall esp. for the miles. I'm thinking about going for it for 4,500 even if I hate it I could most likely sell it for that.

chuki tails for sure.

I liked the ebay jun yan ones, because of how cheap they are.

Yeah, considering its a bone stock 4.8 (internal) with ARP rod bolts and it made over 500 on 12 psi. I am kicking myself in the ass for getting rid of it.

how much do sc3's go for??? I know a guy that's trying to sell his but I don't know much about the value of the car.. he told me, he swapped in a lower mileage 2jzgte, converted it to manual, has basic bolts on (FMIC, exhaust, dump pipe, etc), $1k turbo (not sure which one), 18in wheels, body kit.
