Turbo problem?

So on my way to school this morning everything seemed fine but then... ssswwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee a loud whining from the engine bay. Car still seems just as fast, but now with this loud truck-like unexplainable whine. Could my turbo be cracked, any other possible solutions. The sound is quite distinct yet unexplainable. Only happens during boost.

t25 Garrett turbo. Stock redtop SR

Its like a rattling/scraping. I would say it sounds like the compressor fan/wheel scraping against the housing.

Check the 4 bolts on the mani outlet to turbo inlet. They may have backed out and if they did the gasket would be toast

So if that was the case then a new gasket should be a pretty easy affordable fix right?

As long as your at it pull the intake tubing and check the shaft play or for signs of contact between the compressor wheel and the housing. If the turbo is bad you'll be able to tell pretty easy.

My friend came over and he basically told me it is either what Soup Nazi said. The Manifold outlet gasket. Or there is too much play in the compressor fan. Can anyone point me in the direction of a legit tutorial on how to remove exhaust side and get to the turbo. Thanks for the help everyone. Ive got some major work ahead of me this next week!

how long can i wait before doing this. what damage is possible? :ugh: this is my dd and i cant really afford to do this tomorrow.

Took it all apart. It was the manifold outlet to turbo inlet. While removing studs one snapped off in my manifold :dead:

All done. Runs like new. I ended up taking off the heat plates and pieces that are supposed to hold the nuts in place, i got new studs, new bolts, and lock nuts to help prevent this most horrible of misfortunes from reoccurring in the future. Teamsprock thanks for the tip, turbo seemed fine, and thanks Soup, you hit the nail on the head.
