I'm sure this forum gets a lot of these, but i have done my research because i know how people like to flame for shit like this. For the most part i am just double checking what I have found all over the internet. I am looking to do an rb20det swap in my 91 240sx hatch that we just picked up. My brother and i are making it into a track car, and since we live in different states we are hoping that we can get everything we need to do the project before we start it and take the whole thing on in a few weekends. I have little experience in all of this, basically just what ive read off of the internet so excuse me if i come off as not knowing what im talking about because its pretty much true. This is everything ive come up with.
Necessities:
RB20DET w/ transmission, maf, ecu, etc: +/- $1400
Turbo Down Pipe: $150
Motor Mounts: TopHat: +/- $100 (more difficult) McKinney Blue (Best) $350 Mckinney Black (Better) $250
Intercooler w/ piping (only piping necessary): $400
Gauges & Cluster: $215
Driveshaft: 1 piece aftermarket: $415, 2piece Machined: +/- $215
Recommended:
HKS Fine Tuning Timing Belt: $56
Nissan Genuine Gasket Kit: $150
Stage 2 Clutch - Skyline Jdm: $130
Flywheel: $100
Misc Belts (Alternator AC Power Steering): +/- $30
Fuel Filter: $15
Fuel Pump: $130
Spark Plugs: $30
All of the costs are pretty approx. If theres anything that is way off in cost or anything i am missing could you guys let me know? also if anyone knows what all is needed for an automatic-manual conversion or a place i can find this info that would be great too.
TL/DR: I bought a 240sx and want to do an rb20 swap. Is there anything im missing or any price that is off?

I would not waste your time with the rb20. New tuning timing belt,
Gasket kit is a most since you will have the engine out.

i was thinking rb20 because it seems like the most affordable and its more powerful stock than the sr20. I wont be focusing on power mods for a while because ill be putting money into suspension, tires, brakes, etc first. Plus the car needs a roll cage and i planned on doing an s14 front end conversion at some point, so i want it to have decent power stock.

you'll have a ton of fun with just the stock power and exhaust on that motor. def get suspension asap. good luck on the build

your gonna need to join both harnesses.
rb20 is an ok high revv 6 cyl. i would just throw your money into a ka-t or just do the suspension and everything first then focus on the power

well the main reason im doing the swap is because we found a body that was in real good shape, but the engine had a blown head gasket and shit so we picked it up for 200 with intentions of doing a swap. i dont want to invest a whole lot of time and money into an engine when i dont know the full extent of whats wrong with it, for all i know if we replace the gasket it still wont fire or the life will be pretty short. we figured wed just go directly for the swap and that way well have a functional, good looking 240 for a decent price overall if we do all the labor. seeing the engine im not real confident with it running clean with my brother and i doing the repairs. i think they drove on the blown gasket for a while so for all i know the engine is completely fucked

You have it pretty much right. Since you have the motor out go ahead and re-torque things. Possibly change the oil pump, thermostat etc. Quick version of what you'll need:
Rb20 w/harness w/trans
Motor mounts
Drive shaft
All the other stuff comes with the territory, gasket set, fmic, hardware that kinda thing. Good luck man.

KA-T would be great too

what would that run me total and what kind of power would i be pushing? i dont know anything about this, i just want decent stock power, potential, and something affordable for the time being. i dont exactly have thousands to put into it right away, its gonna be a long term project

Stock for stock an sr is just as, if not more capable of making great power. The sr is lighter. The sr is a much easier swap to do and to get parts for. Initial price aside, the sr is a better motor to swap into a 240 in every way. I'm not saying the rb20 isn't a strong and very fun motor.. But if you're going to the lengths of an rb swap, you might as well go for the rb25. JMO

We've been looking into this too, and we've considered an sr20. I've read a lot of forums, and it seems like everyone says something different about all of the options, so we're still trying to make up our minds. I was leaning towards the rb20 mainly because its the cheapest, its easier to install than an rb25, but it still has potential. for the meager 4-600 dollar difference though, it does seem like it would be worth it to go big with the rb25 or a bit easier with the sr20
