View Full Version : My Constant Sleepy Eye mod.

Im going to start my own permanent "sleepy eye" modification for my 91 coupe.. I had to decide which headlight to go with that would fit nicely and have the correct height and width. I started thinking of car with thin headlights and of course the 88-96 pontiac grand prix coupes came into mind and also the mid 90's camaro's. They looked like this:
http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/3433/800pxwhitepontiacgrandp.jpg (http://img195.imageshack.us/i/800pxwhitepontiacgrandp.jpg/)
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/3472/1995camaro.jpg (http://img13.imageshack.us/i/1995camaro.jpg/)

Im going to have to use the normal headlights for this, but ill post up later about how it goes. For now this is my mock-up. It seems as it will work very well, but I guess we'll see...

Sorry Guys: heres some progress, computer has been actin horrible lately and its hard to do this mod since i cant drive at night with one headlight only as im working on the other headlight...

Baked the headlamps for 6-7 mins at 325ish degrees (glass lense comes off easier when glue holding it is heated), and that was perfect timing cause a tiny bit of reflective material started bubbling inside...phwww. also removed projector peice (obviously)

http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/3599/photo0180q.jpg (http://img51.imageshack.us/i/photo0180q.jpg/)

took this shiz off:

http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/7886/photo0181.jpg (http://img534.imageshack.us/i/photo0181.jpg/)

MOCK UP:

http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/8260/photo0182k.jpg (http://img211.imageshack.us/i/photo0182k.jpg/)
http://img709.imageshack.us/img709/3835/photo0183oe.jpg (http://img709.imageshack.us/i/photo0183oe.jpg/)
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/5196/photo0184j.jpg (http://img208.imageshack.us/i/photo0184j.jpg/)
http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/5196/photo0184j.jpg (http://img208.imageshack.us/i/photo0184j.jpg/)
http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/263/photo0185z.jpg (http://img29.imageshack.us/i/photo0185z.jpg/)

I cut the corners of the old headlight housing (near the top) ans siliconed it. It will probably need to be epoxyed... (due to little vibration) and i mount a bolt/washer at the bottom with use of a hose clamp, very strong mounting system. A DIE GRINDER WORKS WONDERS FOR THIS JOB......!!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/2850/photo0186w.jpg (http://img13.imageshack.us/i/photo0186w.jpg/)
http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/7302/photo0187n.jpg (http://img193.imageshack.us/i/photo0187n.jpg/)

Once again a die grinder is your best friend if you wana do this like I did:

Bolt mechanism:
http://img704.imageshack.us/img704/5121/photo0188k.jpg (http://img704.imageshack.us/i/photo0188k.jpg/)

Buncha grinding:
http://img525.imageshack.us/img525/3712/photo0189u.jpg (http://img525.imageshack.us/i/photo0189u.jpg/)

Here it is in normal headlight rest position, i also made an acrilic plastic cover (held by tape for mock up). It was the hardest part about doing this conversion... very hard to grind it correctly for nice fitment. I used a bench grinder and it worked wonders!
http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/9384/photo0191s.jpg (http://img28.imageshack.us/i/photo0191s.jpg/)
http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/8673/photo0192r.jpg (http://img94.imageshack.us/i/photo0192r.jpg/)

Sleepin:
http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/6780/photo0190.jpg (http://img684.imageshack.us/i/photo0190.jpg/)
http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/4450/photo0193u.jpg (http://img30.imageshack.us/i/photo0193u.jpg/)

Looks terrific in person (lights up the road very well with the halogen that came in it, its better than the stock headlight.)

I was also on the hunt for some slim oem headlights for my supermade buckets. I bought the ones from the old camaro too lol. I gave up on it though. Good luck with your mod. Looking forward to the finished product.

Still have those camaro slim lights if anyone is interested /threadjack

super nice only problem i see is that they are hard to find and if you do find them nsx people want nothing less than 600 bucks for them.

And ontop of all of that, those aren't regular NSX headlights. The pop-up NSX headlights are not projectors.

whats wrong with supermade?

seriously supermade housings with the right PIAA 3 functioning lights > NSX garbage any day of the week.

The pic posted isn't quite clear enough to make out, but people DO retrofit shit all the time y'know.

yes, tiny miniature driving lights are better than oem projectors.

there are a million threads on this shit.

the reason in not buying any of the kits for this is that none of them just had a square reflector only headlight, there was always some projector type thing or something. I a reflector only type guy usually so thats my reason for doing this. And also these sylvania's are slightly smoked which I thought looked great. here's a link:

any halogen light in that style housing is going to have shit for output. hell i remember back in 05 having 9003 or 9004 which ever bulbs with conversion housings. the output was undescribable compared to stock.

whatever setup you choose to do, update your car and steer away from halogen housings (especially if your going to run such a physically small housing)

im suggesting just the super made housings. not the headlights that come with it which are corner store foglights with no projector lenses. also there is nothing wrong with the projector style NSX lenses other than the astronomical cost for them at the moment.

you suggested supermade housings with some dink piaa fog lights in place of decent headlights. your visibility will be horseshit.

couldn't you retain the pop up functionality with the nsx light but just cutting the rod and shortening it? I'm talking about the rod on the headlight motor..

I remember a thread from awhile back (could have even been several years now, I forget). but someone was going to make a fixed lazy eye headlight setup similar to the nsx ones above for a school project and then start marketing them. Anyone remember what I am talking about, and know if he followed through. Down the road I will build a setup similar to these because of how I run my intercooler piping it's my only option or an s13 front end.... so I would be curious to see what I could buy a nice setup for rather than fabbing everything myself.

I would rock the supermade buckets if they didn't cost an arm and a leg.... I refuse to pay high prices for a tiny peice of fiberglass when it's not complicated to make those with the right tools and skills.

Any more info on the NSX lights? You sure those can't be retracted? I remember reading that people were using the 300zx (Z31) brackets to mod the S13 popups a la clearcorners.com
