Stolle this idea from EDacIouSX and his Pushup Challenge Thread!! This is not a pissing contest just a thread for anyone that wants advice or even motivation.! I started my max bench around 150 like 8 months ago and just hit 315 once monday! So i have been making huge improvments. How is everyone else doing? I have been at the gym 5 days a week for some time now.

When I lifted weights back in highschool, I think I maxed at 350. But I couldn't do more than 10 pushups or 1 pull up and I ran the mile in 12 minutes. I was a lineman.
Now I can do a few pullups, and I can do about 40 pushups in a minute, and I can run the mile in about 9.30. I think my max is only like 175 now though.

LOL im pretty much with you. I was a track star. 40 in 4.46 in High School and the mile in 5:37. Haven't tried to do either in quite some time but i would expect my 40 time to be around high 4.5-mid 4.6 and the mile to be in the low 7 mark. I weighed 165 in high school and only weigh 150 now (got sick and lost 20 lbs in 3 weeks and have been unable to gain any weight back in 2 years.)

i weight 132.4 (just weighed myself earlier) and i bench 165. never really try to go past that cause im not really trying to become massive. my max a few years ago at the end of 10th grade was 205. i try to do mainly core/legs more now since kickboxing/mma requires more then just chest(no i dont specialize in specific types of fighting i just do it weekly with friends. i cant afford real training so i just do kickboxing classes at the gym i go to and train on my own/look up training guides online haha)

11 1/2 is a very good time thats for sure. next time you run try to move your feet about a 1/4 sec faster than you normally would and you would be surprised how much that would help your time without exerting much more energy. I only tried running 3 miles a couple time but i was able to do it in high 17 to low 19 mark which was decent if you ran track. My high school track team was best in FL and top 3 in the country we were unstoppable in most events. 3 years in a row we had the FL track athlete of the year with 3 different people. My buddy Walter Dix is the guy who got 2 bronze medals in track at the past Olympics in Beijing. Miss being in that good of shape

wow, some real meat heads on zilvia, haha jk...might be a good idea to state your weight and form too...some people go all the way down, and some stop at 90 degrees...im not saying whats right or whats wrong, but i used to only do 90 and recently (within a month) started full range of motion...blame all the people in my life that told me 90 was the way to go...well, i personally am going to stick with "touch chest"...
i weigh 145, have about 11% body fat:
-90 degrees: 225 (5 reps) not sure of max
-all the way down: 195 (1 rep max so far)
how much do you guys snatch/clean/jerk/thrust, etc.?

245 is my max. My chest is my weakest part of me. Im making big gains in everything else but my chest. I was told by some buddies to move from the flat bench and use dumbells. They say the dumbell focuses on balance more and teaches you good form and how to use your whole body more.

last time i was at 255x4 i never max out. I rarely bench. Too easy to tear pec and tear your shoulder apart. I injured my shoulder 6 months :( havent gottren it fixed it so no hard chest workouts for me.
I mainly use dumbbells, cables and machines. I can narrow bench more than regular bench. My tri's overpower my chest but chest is not lagging. PPl think i can bench more than i look but i cant lol i can db bench press more.

Not to mention, only to do so when your comfortable with the weight, then touch chest.
I maxed at 400 once, thought i could do it a second time but i nearly collapsed my throat.

I believe something is a bit fishy as well. Yours factors up correctly. Someone with as short of arms as you (should) have, could easily lift that considering you have to push weight at a shorter distance than a taller person. Judging by your weight, I'd say you also have quite a bit of muscle too. The extra couple inches on the chest would help the whole distance thing.
You're fairly strong by the way. Good job.

I should have went a lil heavyer and like i posted before i am doing my bench work out with a 12, 8,6,4,6.I have been doing this work out off and on for like 6 months alternating with another plan. Last week me and my partners decided to do a 1 rep max in whichi got to 315. I just went to the dr. and found out im 5'9 :( and 171 pounds. don't really use the barbell for bench, but w/ dumbells i can do 75lbs for 12-15. I don't go much higher since i usually don't have a spot.
pull ups i can do w/ a 45lb plate about 15 for 3sets
dips i can do w/ 2 45lb and 1 35lb plate for 2sets of 12.
I gained hella weight when i went back to hawaii so i'm 185 now.
but I was doing about teh same weight when i was 155 6-7months ago, which kinda sucks.

If you want to get bigger then you need to lift heavier. Put more weight on and do 6-8 reps each set. Also eat shit loads of protein and don't skimp on your carbs either.

Excellent advise. Negative reps are killer for really improving your strength. Size will come with it but I don't see that as much of a bad side-effect haha.
If you wanna get kind of extreme with it (this is for semi-seasoned lifters), you can well...say you're benching. It's a weight that is obviously to heavy for you to push up on your own (probably 5 or 10lbs past your hardest full push). You get to people to spot you on either side. They basically lift the weight up with/for you.
Next comes the hard part, you have to bring it down by yourself. Obviously the 2 spotters should stay put and help if it's needed but it should be mostly you.
There is a TON of danger associated with doing this because it can seriously tear things up if you don't know what you're doing.
This is also usually a cap to an exercise as a last piece of a chest workout (since I used chest press as an example) and should only be about 2-4 reps.
Long post but I thought I'd throw it out there...
missinpistons
09-23-2009, 02:21 PM
on the contrary to the above post... another good negative chest workout is to go medium weight and to have your spotter press down on the bar on the negative as you fight it then explode up. my training partner is in the military and they do tons of resistance training.
noodz ftw.

Benching more than the bar for me is potential suicide.

Single rep max bench press is not a great idea unless you are in a power-lifting competition. Way too easy to blow a pec. We used to train with 315 for 6-8. Dumbells are where it is at. My PR with dumbbells is 125 for 6...I thought my head was gonna pop. This of course was like a lot of others here in my hay day when I was training heavy. At this time I was 5'-6" and 203 and about 12% body fat.

5-6 @ 203. Woaaa u were a ball of power.
Yeah im 6-2 230 and my max as of last week is 300 flat for a 1 rep.
It went down alot, my routine used to be flat bench twice a week, but now I have alot more incline in there instead. more for looks and definition.
My squat and deadlift are my main concerns now.

i dont know what they put in that east coast water but %80 of these max reps dont match up with size and weight.
im 5'6.. 181 lbs and %10 body fat and my max bench is 255 8x's.
so theres a formula to height and weight lol
