View Full Version : Vertical hood mod

Is there a write-up anywhere on how to do this? I tried googling 'vertical hood,' but only inappropriate pictures came up.

Lately I have been seeing this on quite a few S-chassis. Apparently people mod the stock hinges, however when done that way, it seems that the hood leans back and rests against the windshield, which I do not really want.
On the silver Koguchi car above it looks as if some kind of aftermarket hinges might be used, since the hood is sitting straight up, even leaning forward slightly. I was told it is possible to buy such hinges, however I have not been able to find any.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

That's an interesting idea.
Hondas have them stock.
Good luck with your search. Post up what you find.

Dont OEM hinges open up that much? Just the corners of the hood wont allow it to go that far?

Shit. My phone just broke and I have pictures of how to do it on there.
My car has this done. Basically you need to grind one tiny part off of the hinges.
Fuck it. I'll go borrow a camera and go out and take pics right now.
Just for you.

No.
Well they would, but there are little tab things that stop it.

I've been wanting to do this as well... I'll take a Dremel to my hinge tomorrow night and see what happens. :D

The only reason I did this is so I don't have to take my hood off to pull the engine.
KA-T's seem like they always need to come back out. HAHAHA.

09-02-2009, 11:17 PM
what is it leaning on?
The windshield.
Haha.
Yes, I expect problems in the future. I need to figure out a cool honda style hood prop, and something to make it eventually stop. But that won't be too hard.

I did the same thing just ground out the stops. You can grind out as much as you want so it will stop when you want it to. Instead of cutting that tab off if you stick a cut off wheel between the hinge and just grind out the stop on each side till its where you want it.

well i'll be goddamned.
so what's actually stopping the hood? it looks like the edge of the hood hits the glass? a couple pieces of that trim guard stuff people put on their doors would prevent chipping. i'm going to do this f'sho.

Yeah. This shouldn't be done as a "cool" or "hip" thing to do. It's functional and makes it easier for a swap or to get more sunlight at the back of the engine bay.

I cannot believe I just read through all these replies of surprise. People have discussed this on car forums forever, like back when the internet was first conceived, and long before that in books and shit. I thought everyone knew about this. This 'mod' was the first thing I did to my Altima when I bought it in 1993, and since on every car I own.
You guys are nearly two decades late to the party.

My apologies for bumping this thread from the dead, but I presumed this may be relevant to some.
I wanted my hood to stay up without ever leaning it on the windshield. This is the way I ended up doing it.

http://www.matejblahut.com/gallery/d/2670-1/verticalhinge2.jpg
When it opens just a bit past vertical, the angle aluminum stops it by coming in contact with the back of the bottom part of the hinge.
I thought of a few other ways, but I liked this one best because it involves modding the hinge only and having it stop against itself, as opposed to involving the hood or any other part of the car.
Someone can make it more neat or come up with a better way I am sure, as I am terrible at working on cars.
It will all be painted, I just wanted to mock it up for now. After doing so I will put a piece of double sided tape or some stick-on rubber on the bottom of the aluminum, to act as cushioning when it is resting against the hinge.

i forgot to update i actually did this mod, makes everything close to the firewall easier to work with in the engine bay without having to remove the hood, including installing a new engine...
that's a good idea matej! i hated the hood resting on my windshield also but i modified one of the holes close to the strut tower to hold the hood prop rod whatever you call it and the other part holds up to one of the oval shaped slots close to the side of the hood... you idea looks much cleaner though...

It would be easier if you just used some sort of really light metal chain or something similar and have it just stop it before it goes back to far.

A few people have contacted me in regards to this, so I just put together this brief guide. :)

Considered that as well actually, and thought of a few ways how it could be done. However, in the end I decided against it because it would be too 'visible,' while I wanted it to be as hidden as possible. I also did not want the chains/lines flopping around when the hood is closed, so it would take more thinking to figure out how they would sit when they have slack.
I still think it would be neat if someone made aftermarket S13/S14 hinges. It is not that difficult of a part to engineer. Perhaps even ones that can open into different degrees, with a mechanism that 'clicks' locked into place (similar to when an ebrake is pulled up).
how about some pics with the hood on
This is all I have at the moment. The brackets/bolts have no trouble keeping even the stock hood sitting up vertically, since in that position almost all of the pressure created by the weight of the hood is absorbed by the hinges and frame, not the brackets.

my benz could do that, had like a 2 stage strut on it. Opens regularly, than you pull the tab and it allows the strut to take it all the way back like that. Perhaps you could incorporate one of those struts from it and be good to go.
I think Im gonna look at this on my 7.

Ya know what would really do this thread some good. Is someone who's actually completed the modification. I've long since cut my stops off but yet to spend the extra effort on a support mechanism.
Here are some idea's I've thought of.
a rendition on the Datsun 510 hood prop. There is a bracket with a slot that resembles a skewed candy cane on the hood. The torsion spring is only there to force the catch into the hook end of the slot. It effectively forces you to pull back on the prop rod to disengage the catch, preventing it from doing it on its own.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v721/s14unimog/14dc25cf.jpg
Then I've considered this idea. These are Q45 struts that I equipped on my Jeep Cherokee. The geometry allows you to use of a pretty stout strut rate but localize the force on the hinge. I question if this isn't an alternative to gas struts on a carbon hood; which is what I have to work around. The final length of the strut could also act as a "stop". I can't remove the factory stops on this as I would have to radically change the hinge.
