different series rb25 ecu compatablity?

i've been doing my research and i keep getting mixed answers..

i have a series II rb25det and i just fried the resistor and transformer that make the tachometer signal, so i need a replacement ECU..

will a series I ecu work with my s2 motor? does anyone have any personal experience,either successfully running this particular setup or failing in attempting to run this setup?

I'll insert my $.02, and anyone who's actually used a S2 with a non-S2 ECU can chime in here...

Since the Series 2 not only has the igniter "in the ECU", but also has a different pinout/wire colors, I would say a Series 1 ECU will not be a drop-in option for you. If S2 ECU's were thousands of dollars more expensive than S1 ECUs I would say it might be worth your time to investigate the exact differences and convert to S1 wiring harness - since they're not, just look for another S2 ECU.

Grant/YakotaS13 and others in Japan can find one for you easily, or you can scour the forums/shops/ebay for one stateside... not that hard to find.

i dont know why i keep reading people saying that s2 ecu has the igniter "in the ECU" that is wrong, the coilpacks of the series 2 have built in igniters kind of like s15 sr engine.

Haha, I knew something was up with that. Regardless, it leads me to believe that the coil drivers are not compatible (one ECU can not use the other's coilpacks)... can anyone confirm?

Well i bought a series I ecu with the code "TJ" on it and my sII motor runs fine with it. I have to admit though, I was a bit worried starting it up for the first time.

im running an s1 ecu on my s2 motor with s1 harness and my motor is running perfect im just not rinning my vvt

First question is...."what caused the failure?"

If you know the failed components, then have an ecu rebuilder replace the fried components but don't expect anybody in the US to be able to test it.

If you can go to the nistune faq section and identify the "family" of that ecu, you might be able to find out that a car that's common in america uses the same board layout and even possibly the same value parts in the same location.

Then have the defective parts swapped over and cross your fingers that a board trace isn't burnt through between board layers.

The S1 cannot run the S2 engine without the wireharness conversion.
