iirc they issue you a ticket that basically makes your registration invalid until you pass a smog check. not a ref ticket, just you hafta go pass smog.

If you go through in a modded car, and they want to smog it, and you refuse, one of the cops on scene will just pull you over, make you pop your hood, find the reason why you refused, and issue a REF ticket if he finds goodies.

I've been lucky all the times I've been through checkpoints.

If I saw the sign for something like that I'd take the first side street and take another route to my destination. A cop I met said they almost always give you a way out and thats what he recommended I do.

in my town, they seem to purposely set up DUI checkpoints so that there is an easy detour around. You can even stay on main streets. Never heard of emissions checkpoints though. kinda weird to think that's legal.
