So I've had a VTC gear in my possession and a S14 SR that needs it replaced.
Can someone give me a quick run down of the minimum required to replace the gear? I don't want to have to remove anything that I don't need to.
I've looked in the FSM but the only part I saw was tearing down the motor and they pretty much removed everything.
Thanks

The intake cam pretty much needs to come out.
you might be able to get it by removing the front little cover next to the VTC sprocket but the only problem your gonna (like i did) have is getting it back on the cam cuz you will need to rotate the came for the dowls to line up, and the cam is had to rotate when installed

Best bet is to go ahead and remove that cam, and I think the FSM said that bolt needs to be torqued to 95 ft/lbs or something else outrageous.
Edit: 94-101 ft-lbs

You don't have to remove the cam, but it might be easiest to do so... I've pulled mine off and reinstalled it with the cam still installed in the motor.

I just don't want to have to remove the front cover or anything else that is too involved or will take up too much time.
basically are these the steps?
loosen the tensioner
loosen cam gear
remove cam
swap gears
re-install
thanks

I'd leave the tensioner intact until the gear is loosened. Zip tie your timing chain to the pulleys so timing can't get throw out the window, or even rotate your motor over until the links line up. Then procede with pulling the tensioner and everything else out to replace the gear.
