So last June I was pulled over and I received a ref and exhaust ticket. Due to court clusterfucks and them misfiling my paperwork, it wasn't until last month that I had my court date and I ended up paying around $480 for both tickets. I never visited the ref for anything. I have received my new registration, there is no mention of anything, no gross polluter, nothing. So basically it was a big expensive slap on the wrist. Just thought some people would like to know. The judge basically asked me if I was going to fix the problems, but I said yes but I didn't have the money right now and I would do it when I did get the money.
End Story.
Don't get pulled over, it's stupid.

No, Don't do illegal mods to your car. You can help getting pulled over. We just choose to go against the grain.

Yeah I got a verbal warning once with my old ka 240 (just exhaust), but when I got pulled over with the sr it was a no go. They were taking pics of my engine and everything...

Never been pulled over for anything other than a taillight out, thank god for that because if I ever have to pop my hood it's over. LOL

Other than the hack job that is the ac/heating system, the car is doing pretty good. But what s13 doesn't have a bunch of problems? I'm digging the Kakimoto; it's got such a sweet exhaust note I don't get tired of it haha. I can't wait until i can get new speakers though, the original speakers are on their last limbs

Solution: Don't do easily visible mods :) it's all about stock exhaust with a cutout (turbo guys)

Eh, I think National City and Mira Mesa are as bad or maybe even worst than Chula Vista. Then again, about 75% of the motherfuckers down in CV are into little FF Hondas and believe me, about almost all the time they fuck up meets and shit.

What kind of mods did you have in your engine bay and exterior (muffler, aero etc.)? What was the cop's reason for pulling you over? Good luck taking care of it.

s13 coupe with silvia front no aero. i got headers/exhaust but i was cruisin 35mph keepin it quiet when a car flies past me and it was a cop. then he slams on the brakes and gets behind me and says "you must race this thing alot" i was like WTF. then he asks to pop hood then gets me for header/exhaust, intake, breather filter. then he looks at some wires i had hanging out and said "this is bad for emissions its gonna release toxic fumes into the atmosphere and it can kill you" WTF those wires were for the foglights i just installed on my car and i was still testing them so i didnt tuck them yet.
he didnt know shit about cars and he wrote the reff ticket WTF.
then he said he pulled me over because my car screams "race me now. im ready". WTF my car looks like an econobox. its just a stock bodied silvia.
i was a just about to put my turbo in too. atleast i didnt get caught with a turbo cause that would be way worst. dam pigs

I got two exhaust tickets in one month, both taken to the ref, both passing with flying colors and me wasting $10 each time. In Orange County btw. If you are anywhere in socal with a non-stock exhaust be ready for a ticket cause it doesn't matter how loud/quiet it is, they will give you a ticket cause they can cause of a loophole in the modified exhaust laws.

what ethnic are you guys? no seriously that plays a roll imo.
Ethnicity plays a little bit but here are some simple ways to decrease being pulled over:
1. Don't put Decals on your car: It is a fact that police officers will pull people over who have decals on their cars, it's just a sticker that says "Pull me over". Some people will have a "Pot leaf" or "Herbal Life" sticker on their cars, and that is just asking for it. Some of you have "DRIFT!" or "Sideways" and "MUGEN" and "TYPE R" on your 240sx. That is also a dead give away.
Even if you put a Decal of your University: UCLA, UCR, UCI, CSU,.....Police target Teen and College KIDS! They know you're probably going to a party, or getting "high"....having the Munchies and going to the Store, because your COLLEGE kids! And we party in College! Duh! Going on a Beer run.. So obvious.
2. Multi-color car: If your car is one solid color and looks like a bucket, police may not pull you over. If your car has red fenders, white hatch, blue trunk, yellow bumper and pink sideskirts, you will most likely get pulled over just for bad taste. The whole point of not being noticed is keeping it low key. If you drive a seriously clean car, even with monster camber and deep wheels, police may not pull you over because they may like your car cuzz it's so Fresh and clean, VIP status.
3. Wheels that don't match!: You have Enkies in the rear passenger, Fake Works in the front, and a Spinner hubcap on the other side. Or Donuts in the rear and alloys in the front. Police can pick you out easily. They see a car roll by, 2 matching wheels, check. WOops, One alloy and one spinner, pulled over.
4. Exhaust system: It seems most people get pulled over because of loud exhaust. By having a Loud exhaust, the Police gets a reason to pull you over and then has suspicion and can lawfully ask you to pop your hood.
5. Plain and simple, just keep it low key, and a sleeper.....
To avoid having your Hood pop, you must limit your chances of getting pulled over. "You gotta pay to Play so they Say" You can't be mad at the police and courts because you violated the rules. :wavey:

My girlfriend got a ref ticket coming home from the movies in Lakeside (east county san diego) doing the speed limit and just driving home. The cop said her exhaust was extremely loud and that is why she got pulled over. She had a completely stock rb20 and n1 w/ silencer and that shit is quieter then most stock cars. Cop popped the hood said since she has a filter that she did have a cat on the car, so he reffed it.
Then two days ago my bro and I were cruising in his corolla to my shop when a s2000 comes blaring past us, didn't think anything of it. Make a turn to go towards my shop and this cop comes haulin' ass up behind us with the lights on, we pull over dude was like "get your hands where I can see them." Cops comes up with the gun pulled out and everything, cuffs my bro throws him in the back of the cop car and tells us we where street racing with the s2000, avading arrest, and speeding. Long story short, he pops the hood gives it a 2 sec look and gives us a ref ticket and an exhaust ticket, but no other ones.
Keep your car quiet and stock looking to avoid the bs from the cops.

i got just pulled over for the first time in like in 4 years! so i just moved in to rancho cucamonga.
im making a left, stoped at red light... texing my phone away... light turns green and i go puting my cell down as i turn, going super slow. i see a cop on the side going super slow with me on my left side (2 lane left turn). cop cuts every one off in the middle of the intersection to get in back of me and pulls me over...
Me: Damm hes going to get me for tex and driving... crap!
Cop: walks up....
Me: whats up officer?
Cop: the reason why i pulled you over was because you have a modifide muffler. Where you headed?
Me: Home, its that complex on the right. (about 100-200 ft. away lol)
Cop: DL... Reg. bla bla bla...
Cop: did you just moved in this erea?
Me: yeah i did... about 1 1/2 months ago.
Cop: ok... im letting you off on a warning since your new to this city... Just to let you know, we have a zero tolerance on race cars and racing here in Rancho Cucamonga.
Me: i didnt know that sir... thanks for letting me know.
Cop: take care of that muffler. (drives away)
Me: burns out and drifts in to the complex drive way... lol j/k

The correct annunciation is, "What ethnicity are you guys".
Back to the topic, it has more to do than just race.
Most of the time cops don't know how you look when they pull you over.
Even more so, I don't see the point about people complaining about ref.
Nobody is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to put mods that don't comply with state and federal laws on your car.
But a DD if you must.
If you can't take the heat...

stop your complaining you drive an illegal car deal with it. you chose to modify it you chose to take the risk. i have to admit ethnicity does play some Role (idc how much you say it doesn't it does ive been told by more than just a few cops) but the way you drive a car is a bigger role. im the perfect example really

C'MON!" and even when he drives to the track in that car nothing. it's all on the way you drive and look. if you look like a punk you will get hastled. if you are polite and look like you are just going about your own business you'll be OK.

Depends on the cop.
I've been pulled over while following the law.
Was polite and compliant with the officer and still got a ref.
Depends on the cop.
Am I going to cry about it happening, no.

You do know that law is not new right? that has been in effect for some years now, they even have a number where you can report excessive polluting cars don't know if that has change or not.

05-08-2009, 10:25 AM
Lol, yea its for the Air Resources Board HQ here in Northernl CA. Its called a "Smoking Vehicle Complaint" and it literally means NOTHING, you get reported and you get a letter in the mail from the EPA stating that your car is a gross poluter and that you should fix it...thats it...doesnt get reported to the cops or anything. I know because i helped put together the database for logging the complaints in.
I worked at the ARB for like 3 years doing that crap, the only time that it REALLY matters is when you drive a comercial vehicle, then all that stuff is recorded and can become an issue if you repeatedly get reported...then again thats why they have weigh stations and crap with opacity readings bla bla bla...
Its funny tho, you 240 guys have it bad...Its a rather "high profile" car now adays...IMHO its gotten to the point where its like the new civic of street racing...everyone wants one, and now everyone does....so of course the cops are catching on..
I have rocked no front plates on my boosted maxima with my month sticker on my liscence plate all pealed off (pressure washer took it off on accident lol) and i also only have one functioning plate light...I have no tinted windows so you can c all my gauges from accross an intersection....cops never really mess with me (cross fingers) of course my exhuast is on the quiet side to help things out...
i drive my 510 around and that thing is LOUD....if anything cops pull up next to me and give me a thumbs up (happened before) Then again BOTH of my cars are VERY clean, and with the exception of my gauges my maxima is a sleaper...
Best thing you can do is put quiet exaust, WASH your car OFTEN, make sure its got clean paint WITHOUT a "kombat kit" other than that dont mod your car if you cant hang....thats why i bought my 510...NO SMOG bish....lol

Let's say I get pulled over and have to go to a ref station. He tells me I have to take my sr out and put the ka back in. How long do I have to do this? Finding an engine and installing it is no 1 day, or even 1 week adventure for most of us.

tell him go fuck himself and pay your fee's in court...
you drive a car with an illegal engine which you cannot provide any documented proof you purchased it. and the united states cannot provide any legal proof it isn't stolen because the car it came from is not in these states.
I mean is it a no brainer to you fucking idiots why you get these tickets?
It's not like you put a b18c in your 1989 civic hatchback which is legal.
You put a japanese motor in your car from a vehicle that has never been on this soil, and even if it came from your "homies" car it still came from japan. Everyone who gets a ref ticket deserves it, I expect nothing less than getting a ref ticket once I start daily driving my car.
I'll tell the cop, no problem I'll pay my ticket off and be back on the streets in no time, wave if you see me.
They cant impound your car for it unless you were driving like a dumb fuck and that's why you got pulled over and they cannot search your car without a warrant. If you let them then you're a dumbass.
if it's CHP and they deem your car an unsafe vehicle then they have probable cause to search it.
Otherwise your police, sherriff, etc.
have no business under your hood.
Shadowhunter
06-03-2009, 08:18 PM
You are not obligated to pop your hood for any police officer unless they have search warrant. If they ask you tell them no. "Sir I do not consent to ANY searches." If they proceed to forcibly search your car then you can sue them for illegal search and seizure. They can threaten you all they want and try to scare you but without a warrant, they will have to let you go. Don't throw your rights away just because a cop tries to intimidate you into doing so.

Cuz when i was younger, i use to get pulled over once a month!
Now, I never get pulled over. I did about a year ago, going 5 mph over the speed limit. I told the cop I was in a hurry cuz my 5yr old had a fever (which was true) and I needed to take him to the hospital.
He let me go with an exhaust warning (N1, no silencer).

My buddy refused to pop the hood of his CRX a few years ago and his car was towed to the impound. When he got his car back, all the wiring harnesses were cut and he was out a shitload from the impound fee as well as the cost of the multiple emission violations.
We can bitch and whine about the popos all we want but the reality is that we are doing illegal shit to our cars and we will have to deal with the consequences.

cops will get you for anything these days. it's legal to have a cat-back exhaust as long as you dont pass the exhaust decibel. it's somewhere i've read it before.
only thing that pisses me off is when cops tail the shit outta you. honestly wtf is their problem, they could run your plates from a distance. if anything we should be able to brake check their bitch ass and scare the shit out of them or they'll end up rear ending us. it wouldn't be our fault, cause he aint even suppose to be that close. cops are suppose to set examples blahblahblah, but i see retarded cops taking advantage of their authority. some cops are chill but a loot are douche bags imo.

Anyone actually ref their cars and get their tickets resolved? I know I did. It was stupid, I got an exhaust ticket and I had to ref my car in order to not pay a huge chunk of cash.
The GOOD thing is that if you ref (and pass the decibel test) you get a certificate which basically says "I have an xxxwhatever aftermarket exhaust system, and it's legit."
I got pulled over again, flashed this shit at the police, and he let me go without so much as an argument.
