so, long story short picked up this motor for 3000$, I haven't had time to research (yeah I know, I suck) if there are better performing parts for each area, so was just looking for some general common sr20 sense if something should be swapped out for a diff brand, specifically the cams, I haven't seen many people running the bc stg3's from what I did get a chance to look at...
car's going to get a fr gt35r kit fwiw.

I know that the bc are harder to get the timing right. you will need cam gears to get it right. IMO with the gt35 i'd up the pistons to the 9:1 compression for alittle better spool but as far as the rest goes... it looks like you're going to be having some fun with a nice setup.

Why not go with a larger throttle body?
mr_eh
03-24-2009, 11:54 PM
yeah im not sure what cam gears came with the motor, i will most likely go with hks cam gears, i was also considering switching to hks 272 cams and ditching the bc's....
the pistons arent coming out they are already seated in the block, and i havent really looked into a larger throttle body...

i think you should get tomei camshafts! way better than bc and hks in my opinion! wont have to mess with timing at all, and they have been proven to produce more power than any other camshafts out there for sr!

I have BC's 264/264 cams and dont mind them really. I want to have a 256/264 cam set up and get cam gears to eliminate the VCT though. have fun with your built motor!!!

I've seen two different motors with broken BC cams in the past week.
Both assembled by different people, so its not the same person who had an assembly error.
We have seen the HKS cams produce better gains than the Tomei in very similar engine builds.
If you want something bigger/badder than either of these, Talk to me about the Kelford 280's :D
PS your bore should be 86.5 if it is 20 over

03-26-2009, 07:44 AM
hmm im gonna have to look into if the bore is off, would suck if it was :)
it's looking more and more likely that i'll stick with the bc stg3 cams and just get hks cam gears... gonna go over some with the engine builder ~april10th to make sure everything looks good

wound up going with a ts 354, hks 264/272 step 2s, and a q45 tb =V greddy cam gears...
now im wondering if the h beams will hold up past 600 if i get there

All of this money on a high hp build with quality parts and.......
you are going with a COMETIC headgasket?
Shouldn't you go with something a little bit better than that?
:wtf:

well if you would read, it says he bought the engine will all these parts on it already. He is asking if there are better options for each part.
But yes, definately go with a gasket that is proven. Apexi, cosworth, power enterprise, hks, greddy are all good brands. And get rid of those BC cams. They suck. I know from experience.

My bad on this one, I didn't quite understand the wording when I first read it.
Yeah go with something better...Apexi, Cosworth, etc.

Stock rods have been pushed to 600hp, Manley H-beams are better than Eagle rods if I remember right. Think thats the last thing you'd have to worry about. What size injectors are you planning on slapping on this engine and what size turbo again?

Do JE pistons come with tomei wrist pins? I've never used JE but that seems weird that they don't have JE wrist pins...
Sounds like you're going to have to pull the pistons back out any way if you're bored .020 over and have stock bore pistons... might as well get some 9:1's if that's the case.

Make sure you use Cosworth, PE, HKS or EVEN BETTER THAN ALL OF THESE
Apexi HG.
If you have your car tuned properly on a brake eddy dyno like a dyno dynamics you should be able to have a reliable 500-600 WHP setup with stock rods. No problemo.

I dont think many ppl know this but Eagle upgraded the rod bolts a little while ago increasing its strenght to 900hp

This also depends on where you bought them and what their stock was. Manufactures always blow out older stock @ discount pricing and stores typically buy'em all up quickly. This gives them greater stock at less expense cost all while retailing at a slightly discounted price.
Check your build or control number and call eagle.

build this thing already...

----edit:
Eagle rods are great sportsman type rods that can handle power. As with any build, when an engine reaches a certain level of RPM, the harmonics, resonance/vibrations etc. must be addressed along with a well tuned ecu for your build.

According to that link ARP 2000 is the new hardware. I was surprised to see my Eagles come with ARP 2000's and that was about 3 yrs ago...

the stuff in red i havent purchased, which is preventing me from assembling the motor, i don't want it to sit for a few more months while i save $... small income with big dreams = lots of waiting lol...
but i do have a bunch of pictures of parts laying around, working on getting a more fleshed out archive of pictures
