Hey guys its been awhile since I have been on this forum (since I sold my s13 w/blacktop sr20det) and I have a qustion about the vvt on an rb25det. I am working on a new offroad project that consists of a two seater sand rail and I was going to do a sr swap but actually for less money I can get a rb25det so my question is on a rb25det is the vvt actuated from the ecu or does it run from the speed sensor or something, I will be using the stock harness and ecu in the buggy so I am guessing it should just be plug and play. I ask this because when I install the engine into the buggy I will not be hooking anything up to the transmission so I am wondering what codes it might be throwing and if any of those codes will affect how the engine will run.

ECU / RPM triggered.

Now do you guys also know if the speed sensor is not hooked up which I will not be able to hook it up because I cant use the transmission will it throw the ecu into limp mode and cause the engine to run poorly? I would not think that it would but I just thought I would pick your guys brains because basically the only thing I am going to keep wired up is everything from the engine harness to the ecu and I dont need anything hooked up inside the car or to the transmission, and also you say that it is rpm triggered?
Where does it pull the rpm from the cas or what because I will not be running cluster. thanks again guys.:coolugh:
It will be fine. It's a common mod for the speed sensor wire to be cut to remove the speed limiter. Don't worry about it, it won't affect anything. The ecu gets the RPM from the cas.

Sweet thanks for the help guys, I am going to have kennedy engineering make me up a custom adapter plate for the engine but from what I have been reading it looks like the rb25det uses the same clutch as the n/a 300zx and it just so happens that kennedy makes a kit to use the 300zx engine in a sand rail already so if the clutches are the same I can just use the clutch kit for the 300zx that they offer and just have them make a plate.
BTW when I buy the engine swap I am not going to need the transmission so how much do you guys think I could get for it because selling the transmission will kind of offset the cost of paying for a custom plate to get fabbed up for me. thanks guys for all your help.

You can get a lot for RB25DET Transmissions. People Running RB26DETT's in RWD form need them.
Figure about $700-800, though now is a bad time too sell anything.
